Anyone else think Mirage Saloon is basically the lost Desert level from Sonic 2? I mean it's not called "Dust Hill" but the new name is a lot more fitting.
I've only got to play through as Tails and finish one Blue Sphere course and I'm done. 23 years I've been waiting for a game like this and I'm not disappointed. Sonic perfection.
I'm only at Flying Battery zone atm, but it's amazing. The collector's edition is more than worth it. Oddly I wish it were on the Vita. It would be better than the inevitable mobile port will be. Oh well.
From both Sonic 2 and Sonic CD. There was a canned level in CD called 'Desert Dazzle'. An incomplete version of the level can be accessed in the 2011 port of Sonic CD
Interesting answer to someone who asked Whitedhead on twitter if it were possible to theortocially port it to dreamcast.
I feel a lot of the criticism in the review was unwarranted, especially the concerns about the developers. Just look at Sonic 4 and Sonic Boom, which were outsourced to established studios. What I would say, although this applies to all indie and remastered retro titles, is that perhaps they receive higher review scores than they necessarily should do for what the games achieve. I don't think the number of people on a team or even necessarily the price of the final product should have any impact on review scores, yet a glance at the top rated games for any current platform shows that they clearly do.
I agree. What stuck out to me were the comments about sticking to Genesis visuals and not pushing anything. Yeah, it's not pushing the limits of todays hardware, but that was never the point. It's hinted everywhere that this is the direct sequel to the Genesis 2D sonic games. This is basically the game that should have been released on the Saturn (being the 2D beast it was), and the visuals compliment that idea very well. Tons of frames of animation, mode 7 style stuff the Genesis couldn't do, mixed with 32bit quality 3D objects (Sonic in the bonus stage looks a lot like Sonic R's model). It's clear that was the idea and I think they did a good job nailing it. Also, lack of polish is mentioned. This game is not lacking in Polish, I don't know what you're talking about. Oh, and the theme song fits the animation well. One can argue the entire intro is out of place, also being the only thing rendered in full resolution. But you know what, it's an awesomely animated intro that does a great job showing classic Sonic, so I can forgive it.
Just for emphasis, Desert Dazzle was never a lost level from the original Sonic CD, but was rather a level that Christian made himself that he wanted to put into the 2011 port, but Sega ultimately rejected it.
Then you're in complete agreement with our video then. Well said. You're talking about my part of the video, but that's not what I meant. I completely understand that it is meant to be a new game in the 16-bit style. All I was saying is that these guys are getting praises like they're the second coming, but all they did was re-arrange what was already made. They did a good job of that. Everyone's saying it's the best Sonic game in years though, and I can't agree because I like most of the 3-D Sonic's personally. Most of my comments about this were removed from the final video. I hope I'm not being misunderstood by everyone.
There's a lot of cr@p in that video review - Sonic and Knuckles you could endlessly juggle the sign at the end of the level too (so that's not anything new in Sonic Mania, and rubbish according to the reviewer). Also, he's moaning about the fact you need 25 rings to play a bonus stage, down from 50. Again, from what I recall in Sonic and Knuckles, only 20 was needed to play a bonus stage over a save point - so back in your box Mr. Reviewer and go back to 1975 please. I am really hoping a physical game release comes out for the Switch.
I'm definitely interested, but it's disappointing to see that they can nail a 2D Sonic but fail with most 3D Sonics. All I want is another Sonic Adventure.
"Moaning"? The 25 ring thing was mentioned, not complained about. We must really be giving the wrong impression. Sorry you didn't like the video. I agree he spent too much time talking about the sign juggling. This kind of stuff happens when it's a collaborative effort. This was just automatic. We never set out to be contrarian, we just gave our opinions. We find that we're often on the other end of the opinion spectrum. Hence the focus on retro gaming.
They are getting praises because it IS the best classic style Sonic console game since 3&K. I mean really, what are we comparing to? Sonic 4 and Generations. While Generations was a good game, it still didn't quite have the full on feel of the classic games. The action never speeds up to classic 2D based games, and even at the highest speeds it does get to things start chugging. I guess it's just not easy to move highly detailed polygonal worlds at the speeds the original games reached. Sonic 4, I don't think i need to explain. If you don't agree because you like 3D Sonic games better, that's fine. However, you must understand when making this review that a LOT of us remember Sonic the fondest as the classic 2D sprite based games.
