There are multiple distros that run better than yellow dog. I'd like to try Damn Small Linux or even the shonky Damn Small XP isos that are out there.
Why would those distros run any better than the one designed for Cell Architecture, they won't access memory connected to the gpu side of the ps3 unlike later builds of yellow dog!
You mentioned not enough memory for yellow dog. By the name of DSL one would presume it would need less memory
DSL refers to just the install though right? In terms of HDD space. Not necessarily memory footprint.
I personally play emulators on my wii (mainly supermario3, which I do own), not pirated games. I watch DVD movies too, which the wii originally can't. As for linux on ps3, many distribution of linux are made to works on incredibly low ram system (angstrom, damn small linux, SliTaz just to name them). Furthermore, with the whole system accessible maybe the distros can start using the videocard to speed the things up a little. FG
Head over to the yellow dog forum, and you will now what I am talking about. the RAM is split between processor and the gpu, and most distros don't access the gpu side. yellow dog on there later builds are the only one. (I agree when it comes to emulators the Wii is a much better option)
No, reverse engineering is legal in Germany. You bought the hardware, you do whatever you want with it. Any Licenses that claim you´re not allowed to do this or that are not valid. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_Engineering#Rechtliche_Aspekte (german, just as source) @ Taucian: DSL is about 200 MB... Heck, there was a time not so long ago it was only 50MB, fitting fully into the RAM of a P3 machine. Good days...
True, but when compared to all the PS1 and 2 exclusives, I am sure the numbers are dwindling for the PS Triple. + to me, it seems to make more sense that any developer would want a multi-console release, and the PS3 and 360 have been a perfect match for that as we have seen. Also, the fact that Sony is doing all of these things lately just proves that they are trying there hardest to protect their company and their product, but not stopping to think about their image.
German hacker "legend" Fefe calls all hackers, techies, programmers and customers to the barricades btw. http://blog.refefe.de/?ts=b39b60f2 (german) Mr. Shit, meet Mr. Fan. :gravedigging: SONY
My old 256MB RAM 333MHz PentiumII in my basement behave extremely well with DSL. It's just a matter of throwing out some eye-candy to replace it with optimised stuff. It's AMAZING how badly optimised the modern OSes are, because you got a big CPU the devs tends to add up functionnality instead of making their code run as fast as possible (and it's not bad in itself on modern pc). With a little optimization a small footprint OS with a GUI is completely possible. It just won't be as sexy as a mac. Also, reverse engineering is legal here in Canada, and I personally think it should be allowed as long as it is not used for commercial intentions (aka selling a ps3/wii backup manager or emulators or even selling the ps3break dongles) FG
BTW linux on ps3 was severely toned down. When it'll be out agin it will make use of all the cores and GSX too. IIRC DSL runs with 32mb of ram too, and you can run almost any distro decently with 128mbs of RAM. It depends on what you wish to do with it obviously.
HE made his research public on a PS3Wiki.He wrote a large page about patching the disc drivers and installing Linux to the HDD. And a hypervisor and GameOS function documentation. IBM developed a 65nm PowerXcell that has DDR2 RAM support and is faster in floating point math.I would like to have a computer using it.
never connecting to PSN and disabling all the network options on your PS3 is akin to Anne Frank hiding in her attic.
