So I decided recently to shift my focus back to the PSX. Mine was up on a shelf collecting dust (literally) for months, maybe even a year... So today I powered it up to play final fantasy xii and unfortunately the disc never loaded. Worked perfect before but damn these are some delicate pieces of hardware...

I decided to open it up to clean the laser and discover there's actually 2 dvd drives in these things :smashed:and one of the lasers looks very familiar...

As you can tell, its a KHS-400c, same one found in (I believe) an scph-30000 ps2. So I think I should be able to just swap out the laser if it turns out to be dead? How hard are these to find?

If SCPH-5000X also use them then I'd have one available.

SCPH-5000x can have two different laser models, the KHS-400C and the HD-7. So your console may have one in it, but you would have to open the drive assembly up to check... it should say what it is on the laser housing.

Hmm... Re-plug all the connections, get compressed air and clean the reflectors, check the motor, dead switches / limit switches and also check that the spindle houses the disc correctly.

Laser diodes should not die out THAT easily :p

Well i dont know what to think... I just noticed some scratches on my games i was trying, the types that go in circles around the center. Music cd's play fine. I dont have any japan-region dvd movies to try on it. It still burns dvd's so the other laser is good. I hope its just these games that dont play due to the scratches. Already used compressed air, was the first thing I did.

Its obvious which laser does the burning, and which reads the ps2 discs. But I wonder which one handles dvd movies and music cd's...

Knowing SONY it's an easy guess:

    The PS2 laser does it.

So then that would mean that the problem is the games, and not the psx. I left the psx open while I inserted the game and it does go all the way in, but it just spins continuously.

If haunted had a psx drive he could do a ps2 slot loading project easy

    Haha yea man!

I was going to do a PS2 slim slot loader.
But, what I really wanted to do, was put a PS2 (slim) inside of a PS.

Give a PS1 game (CD-ROM) a go in the drive, and then try a PS2 game (DVD-ROM). If the DVD fails, you need to adjust the laser diodes POT. Also give the eye a light clean with iso-propyl alcohol with a q-tip if you have not done that already.

I went to the store and left a music cd playing in there, until I got back it was still going good. I found a transformers game in pretty clean shape and even it didnt work so now I know the issue is with the psx. I dont have any japanese ps1 games either. Whats this POT stuff youre talking about? Both my PSX's have bad drives now so it be good to fix at least one.

You can fix both easily. Sony just made shitty drives...

When the CD-ROM only plays, and not DVD's, it is the laser.

The POT is the potentiometer (variable resistor on the voltage line) that adjusts the laser diodes strength. If you increase it, it becomes more powerful. Hence, when I did this to my PS (PS1) I could read CD-RW's.

Turn it just a fraction. It is hard to explain, but there are sites on the internetz that can help you.

Look up a PS2 guide in this case, or a PS1 and you will know what I am talking about.

The image below, is for your laser. Adjust the one that this guy thinks is the DVD pot.
There is also an anti-static solder point for discharge. But we will try this method after if the POT adjustment fails...

There are other KHS modules also.

Yeah I looked it up, from what Ive seen I need to turn the left knob thing clockwise, 1/4 of a turn, right? I have a bunch of fat ps2's that dont read discs, I'll try with those first.

OK. The PS2's may also need a lens clean so do the same thing with the compressed air and alcohol.

Well those ps2's are trashed, this trick has already been done with those. Ok so I dont have an ohmmeter, so how many degrees should I rotate the pot at a time?

Hmm... Hard to explain. Just a tiny amount. The thickness of a coin...

Oh, dont throw away the PS2's! The boards and parts are still good!!
Who knows, maybe someday someone will make a PS2 drive emulator ;)

huh... I guess I over did it... ps2 games still dont work yet it still plays cd's, which is weird considering the laser should have burned from receiving too much energy. screw it though, just gonna replace the laser. they're under $20, which is not a lot to spend on a part to such a rare console.

And no, I wont throw away a perfectly good console... I mean I paid 3 whole dollars for each of these

Yeah but I bought these broken. Havent tried fixing them yet, except for today with the laser pot thing, which was already done.

$360, eh? I got my first ps2 pretty late, and by late i mean around 2005 when the slims (this one was a slim too) were already a year old. I was so happy about it, but since I spent all my $80 on my precious ps2, I couldn't afford any games but the one I already had, which I played the hell out of. I was like 15 years old so I was pretty enthusiastic about it lol. still have that ps2.
