    Ah well. That sucks.

If you were in Australia, you could post them over and I could fix them all for you ;-)

Like you said, best bet is to just buy a new laser...

Tried a different laser and same symptoms... Tried the original in an scph-30001 ps2 and it worked perfectly. Could this be a software problem?

Im thinking If it is a software problem, I should be able to fix it in the settings, but I dont know japanese... I just hope its not a software ERROR...:flamethrower:

The Japanese PS2s have an English option as well as the default Japanese. Doesn't the PSX?

Nope. japanese only. It actually isnt too big of a problem, usually... but in this case it is.

Yes I don't think it would be a software related issue on the HDD...

Corrupted eeprom is a software problem, not hardware. Because the mechacon chip (which is part of the main board) need the laser calibration data to control the laser pickup properly, having an corrupted eeprom will cause the mechacon to attempt to use predefined defaults which might not be adequate for your laser pickup.

Sorry to bump this topic up... **Pfft what a dust!**

Anyway, i have the same problem. My PSX wont load any ps2 games. works perfect with the PS1 games.. Only once it booted a PS2 game.. after 20 tries.. lol. So if a laser is bad, it must be the Sony 400C or that other one in the grey/metal housing on the left?

PS: My PSX is still original, without the FMCB instal or anything..

If the PSX cannot detect the game while at the XMB, then it is likely a problem with the writer laser.

The information mentioned above in this thread, was from before l_Oliveira got a PSX.

I see, is it hard to get a new laser in? or find a new laser from a PSX? I am total new to the PSX.. Got it for 5 days now.

It's definitely rarer to source for, given that fewer devices used it. There were two models of it: the SONY KWS-200A and the SANYO SF-DB11.
If you ever replace that, remember to replace it with the correct version.

I have two PSX units. The earlier (smaller) model uses a SONY writer pickup (the picture by the OP of this thread is of the SONY laser) and the newer/later models use a SANYO laser pickup.

I found a DVD recorder on a dead G5 MAC which had the exact same optical pickup as my newer PSX. So I replaced the pickup and now it read all discs. I didn't try to burn discs as I didn't run any kind of calibration and I am afraid of ruining the laser by doing so. I'm very satisfied with it being able to read discs... haha

Unfortunately since the PSX has to be compatible with blank discs it has to probe the discs first with the write laser before it tries to read the discs as ROM. Using the PS2 laser to detect would cause damage with blanks inserted as the PS2 laser can't find the wooble on writable discs (blank writable discs have no groove, just a wooble which acts like the guiding lights on the borders of a airport runway).

i just noticed that the SONY KWS-200A can be ordered new from Sony.nl... But it will cost 260 Euro... (+/-290 US Dollar) Bit to much for me.. Anyone can think of a list where these lasers are used in?
