Sony PSX DESR-5000 dvd drive

I recently got a DESR-7700 from Japan which seems to have been damaged in transit.

The seller said that they had tested it extensively and everything worked (PS games, PS2 games, burning discs, etc). But when it arrived here, it won't read any discs at all.

It has some new cosmetic damage on it so I'd say it was bashed around a fair bit during shipping, and this is probably why it no longer reads discs.

It sounds like the general consensus is that not reading discs means the writer laser has failed. How could being dropped cause this sort of fault though?

I've ordered a SF-DB11 which will take a few weeks to get here. Is there anything else I can try in the meantime? I took the case apart and everything seems ok. No loose cables or anything.

 

Most people here who ask about this problem, got their units like that. They were simply heavily used by their previous owners, to a point where the writer optical block no longer works.

Yours might be a different problem, although it is probably not impossible for the optical block to have been damaged by shock...

 

My DESR-7500 unit had signs of mechanical shock on the SF-DB11 pickup (loose prism mirrors) inside. So I agree that damage in transit is indeed possible.

 

Meeeeeeen, you are so lucky you can order a Sanyo SF-DB11...

 

How do you know where the KWS-200A lasers are in? You have more models for me maybe? Maybe i can find one in the Netherlands

Honestly, I was expecting the MAC G5 drive to have a KWS-200A but it had a SF-DB11, which was even better (my DESR-71000 still read CDs so I can use music CDs on the XMB which is neat). As the 7500 had broken prisms it couldn't read CDs or DVDs and finding a SF-DB11 was like hitting the jackpot.

 

I guess that's good then, in a way. I'll just put the PSX aside until the new laser gets here. Seems like maybe I should order a replacement for the other laser too just in case. It'd suck to finally put the new SF-DB11 in and put it back together only to find that it still won't play games.

 

It's from Aliexpress. There are a fair few people selling the SF-DB11.

 

No i ment i need a kws-200a, and not a SF-DB11.. That is wat i ment with lucky..
But i found a Sony RDR-GX7 DVD Recorder. That recorder has a kws-200A inside. so i will get that out and put it in my PSX

 

I received the replacement laser, installed it into the console, and... Absolutely nothing seems to happen when a disc is inserted. It doesn't make any noise at all. Doesn't spin the disc or move the laser.

Any ideas? Even if the drive motor was dead, the laser should still track back and forth, right?

 

Check the flat cables and latches them.

The Sony GX300 uses same laser too and they are cheaper

 

I tried manually moving the burner laser then powering the console on, and the laser didn't move at all. If I move the ps2 laser then it moves back to its home position when turning on.

Where would I get a replacement motor for the burner laser if that's what's wrong with it? I don't even know what model number to search for or anything.

 

This kind of repair isn't really for amateurs. The PSX is super complex and full of "traps" for newbies like, for example, fragile flat cables which can be perforated with screws quite easily...
