i know Soul Calibur 2 came after the dreamcast was discontinued but i heard the the developers were having a hard time programming the ps2 so they decided to make a beta for dreamcast. After the finished the beta they ported to the ps2 and developed the game from their on. Has anyone ever seen the beta? this question was also posted at the Sega forums a while back. here is the link for the original thread

This is rather hard to believe. For one sister studio Tekken Project had some experience programming on the PS2 by then with TTT. Both studios are known to share talent and work together for their respective properties. Additionally, from what I recall, Soul 2 took its time to come out simply because the success of the first Calibur on the console front was an overwhelming (and rather unexpected) success. Project Soul found hard to follow up what many considered a perfect fighter. Additionally, Soul 2 on PS2 (and on the other consoles of that matter) is simply a port of the arcade version released in 02 which runs on 246 board (or is it 256?) Which is a more versatile hardware based on PS2.

The name of the book was called Japanese game developer and it said Soul Calibur 2 began development in 1999. The ps2 was hard to program for at the time I believe so the developers decided to do the beta on dreamcast and later port it to ps2. The namco 246 was released in 2001 so maybe they could have ported ps2 version of soul calibur 2 without any of the special characters. Then port the soul calibur 2 to to the Xbox and gamecube.

It's entirely possible that the team started work on Soul Calibur 2 straight after the first game was finished, they probably had no PS2 experience at the time as it wasn't out at the time and all the people with experience were working on Tekken Tag Tournament. They may not have had many devkits either.

There will be plenty of stuff like this that never gets out.

I seriously doubt this, the DC was dead and every ounce of of it decayed before SC2 released on other systems. And to develop on the DC to port to the PS2 would be a nightmare in the first place. PS1 to DC conversions were easy as the PS1 was inferior. Use an inferior source and port to a more capable machine leads to bad results which we have seen time and again. I have been around the DC scene since 1999 and not once have I ever heard of a mention nor a whisper of a SC2 even having any DC code let alone a complied BETA.

I don't understand why you keep saying this? As your statement completely ignores Soul 2 System 246 release in 2002 which was released almost 1 year before its console counterparts.

I'm trying as best as possible to understand what you saying here because I have no clue...???

Yes, 246 was introduced in 2001, and by then Namco already had some experience with the hardware by way of Ridge Racer V Arcade. This is Namco we talking about here folks. They were essentially somewhat of a 2nd party dev for the Sony platforms. Let not forget.

Now back to this whole Soul 2 on DC. In a sense one could say Soul Cal on DC in itself was the BETA, being the ground work which was to be its long overdue sequel. Let's no forget Soul Calibur was already year old game before its appearance on the Dreamcast. Mostly likely scenario, Project Soul used a build of the dreamcast port during early developement of Soul 2 to tweak the fighting system for Soul 2 implementing both scraped and ultimately used gameplay implements like Walls, a more accessible Juggle system, Just Frames, a tweaked gaurd impact system and overall faster gameplay.

In all honesty, I'm more interested in what became of the rumor of Namco porting Soul Calibur over to the NAOMI system. I remembered reading a lot on the proposition after the success of the game on the Dreamcast.

If I'm not mistaken wasn't Soul Calibur 2 intended to be a Gamecube Exclusive?

It was certainly planned for DC if my Dreamcast Magazine is to be believed.

Sorry about my grammar, what I was trying to say was that maybe the developers could have already finished a ps2 version of Soul Calibur 2 and ported it to Namco 246. The only difference there would be that Heihachi is left out.

I figured that is what you were getting at but wasn't entirely sure. Heihachi isn't the only difference between them. Necrid is also not in the arcade. Additionally, the Arcade version single player mode is entirely unique from the console experience. I used to play it at the local arcade at my university. I just don't see it man. This IS what happend in Soul 3 where the console version preceeded the Arcade version...

I have never played the arcade version of Soul Calibur . Is it any different from the dreamcast version ? because if it is I would assume that the console and arcade versions were meant to be different from the beginning. This would mean that the ps2 version was never intended to be the same as the arcade version and the Soul Calibur 2 console version began development on dreamcast....

System 246 is PS2, so if there was a DC version then it would predate that.

Think you are getting Soul Edge and Soul Blade backwards.

Isn't Soul Blade console exclusive? I thought the arcade game was named Soul Edge worldwide.

Yeah, the arcade version of Soul Calibur is pretty disappointing from a graphical standpoint. Played it while I was waiting for a ferry years ago.
