Space Channel 5 Part 2 Translation Project

Discussion in 'Rare and Obscure Gaming' started by Christuserloeser, Jun 21, 2004.

  1. There has been a request for assistance to a very ambitious translation project of Space Channel 5 Part 2 for DC started. Needed are voice actors (both female and male). So if you'd like to see the game translated and wish to help out, please get in contact with these people. Here's the complete info:

Greetings! We are putting together a small group for a fan based translation of Space Channel 5 Part 2. The goal is to give the game the attention it deserves on it's native console, the Sega Dreamcast. The project is under translation and some scripts will be ready shortly. Initial hacks have been processed, and are working, however, for legal reasons new tools must be developed, and are essentially complete but untested as of this moment. Lead programmer and Hacker Purge (For the time being) heads the duet of 2, the second being U-la-la-la of bakanalia, who is the lead translator and leader of quality assurance. The team is lacking voice actors for the rolls of the game. Please note many roles require a large sense of rhythm and some involve singing. Others are simply extras, and there are ALOT of extras. Your effort is needed in order to ensure this project succeeds. To audition please send a 15-30 second mp3, ogg, etc (NO WAVE, sorry it is too big) of yourself saying your name, and a few lines of anything you want to ginji-chanNOSPAM@kawaiipetNOSPAM.net (please get rid of the two instances of NOSPAM for the correct email address). A plethora of both Males and Females are needed, all kinds too including butch females and femmy guys as well. Questions, comments, and offers to help
are also welcome to the above address. Its a large undertaking but if you want to contribute to the community and have another localized game please give the project your support! No offical web page will be given at this time however there is a thread on the Space Channel 5 Glooboard under the Space channel 5 Part 2 Discussion thread: http://www.glooboard.com/dcg.php?cID=SpaceChannel5

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but it seems like a bit project for something you can play on another system. Aren't there quite a few RPG/Strategy games that should be hacked first?

    I don't understand it either...
I'd somewhat appreciate to play the DC version in English, but why translating and recording ? The game has been released in English on PS2 already. One could extract voice and text data from this version.

(On another hand, I felt that Space Channel 5 Part 2 was better in Japanese)

is it really that easy to translate a dc game? at least in a programing sence? if it was, im sure panzer front and frame gride would be freakin in english by now.
anyway, wouldnt it be easyer to rip the sound tracks from the crap-o-licious ps2 version? or better yet just add some simple sub titles?

Yeah, I was wondering about the same thing...just use the text and voice samples from the PS2 version.

Or just play the PS2 version altogether. I shelled out $70 to get the Japanese DC version when it came out, even though I knew I wouldn't enjoy it 100% since I do not know Japanese. It was more like a collector's item for me.

Then bought the US PS2 version for $15, which includes both Part 2 and the original one in English.

However, an English version of Grandia on Saturn would be nice, because 1)the Saturn version has way better graphics; 2)SCEA butchered the translation.

Well said TheDeathcoaster. A translation of Policenauts would be great. Best do the Saturn version though. It may be weeker in the FMV department but everything else is better than the other versions around.

As for the team translating Space Channel 5 part 2, I wish them good luck but can't help thinking that they haven't thought this through at all. Like others said, just use the PS2 samples and text.

PS: Space Channel 5 part 2 sounds stupid in English anyway :Hangman:

In regards to using PS2's resources:
People say whats the point of doing the dreamcast version, why not use the ps2s resources, etc. I have not seen the 2nd one in english, nor do I plan to until the project is complete. I want to make a fresh impression on the game. Then compare the two. However, I do not own, nor will I ever own a ps2, and I'm sure many people paid good money for sc5p2 but can't understand it, this will give them the opertunity to do something about it and understand their investment (I too paid about 80 dollars for the collectors edition). Nothing beats the game native console, I mean come on it was made by Sonic Team(was UGA), it NEEDS a sega console. Sony is no acceptable substitute in my eyes. As for having an accent, Peace has a realativly large accent in the game, sounds almost german, though he does sing a bit, but I since his song is in english, I probably wont touch it, and personally I think accents would add 'flare' to the project, but thats just me. I have had a few saturn projects in mind after I finished about 2 more of my other projects, but only tme will tell me if I have the timer to do them. Thanks for the support, I'm just trying to trail to where chris posted these requests and followup. Almost forgot, as for subtitles, I actually tried to get the game to display a few extras, for some reason though it threw the game out of sync, so my thinking is that the game is heavily linear and instruction dependant. I however don't know much sh4asm so that poses a small problem. and straight from out glooboard from u-la-la-la on subtitles "Subtitles are an idea.... only problem is, you really couldn't play the game very well (well, at least I couldn't) while you're distracted by subtitles ^^;; It'd prolly be more of an after-you've-played-attraction, I guess..."

The guy who runs this site: http://junkerhq.net/ already has the text script dumps and apparently has been in the process of translating Policenauts for a couple years.

    http://junkerhq.net/dumps.html

Post on his messageboard and give him some more encouragement. :)

    That's one helluva task!

I remember seeing advertisements (probably on the back of an instruction manual of a Konami game) around the launch of the PSOne and Saturn, that advertise the US release of Policenauts and Parodius on PS and Saturn.

Parodius never made it out in the States (but an english version did get release in Europe), probably because of the eagle with USA colors on it that you have to shoot to get power ups.

As for Policenauts, I don't know what happened to it. Maybe those genius executives decided that kind of games wouldn't sell in the states.

After being part of two translations projects (one also being haulted after working on it for a year --- anyone good at PC-Engine CD hacking?) it just seems to me that the hundreds of man-hours spent is better spent on a game that's not playable in English AT ALL.

That and I'm not much of an SC5 fan either.

The day that gets finished is the day I walk naked into a supermarket and buy a can of crisco + rub myself down with it while making chicken noises.

  15. That really conjures up a horrifying mental image... :smt043 :smt043

We'll hold you to this if the project ever gets finished.

Was it the menu that has been translated in that shot? It's been so long since I played it. By the way, have you guys done the main front end menus yet?
