Big difference though: boring in the process. I agree... the upper tier of games suck for mortals. Ketsui took me ages to 1CC, and that was only the first loop, and a bombed the last boss to death like a cowards. I agree... it's hard as nails, but when you really get into these games, something eventually clicks, and going through a stage unscathed gives me much more pleasure than taking 10 tries to get through some stage in a modern game. Anyone can do that. Not anyone can clear something on a credit. For the record, Cave's last two games welcome just about anyone (3 if you count Mushihime-sama Futari: Black Label). Death Smiles is their easiest bar none if you choose the lowest ranks. Very difficult if you choose the highest. Of course, the latter gives a better score. Enjoyable for anyone! Their next one, another Dodonpachi, is fucking hard though!
A lot of people think the same about leveling up a character in WoW, I just dont share the same idea. I agree on the rest though, but shooters (werent they called shot'em up?) arent the best example for what I was trying to say.
Shit. Considering you must forfeit your normal life to play WoW, I wouldn't use that to compare... in the least. That one crosses the boundaries of game and reality. Shoot 'em up / Shmup. Kind of a dumb word. I've definitely grown out of it.
You shmup fans have it good - whereas we platformer fans have lost our bread and butter ever since 2D games seized being made. And for some reason there's been a steep decline in quality 3D platformers ever since the N64. (although the GC did offer some quality titles) /rant off/
This is why I have such a fondness for Galaxy. I haven't played a platformer as good as Mario 64 since Mario 64. Over a decade! h:
I'm a bigger fan of platformers... but as you've said, they're kind of gone. The most recent one I've heard of other than on a handheld is Spica's Adventure (TypeX). I don't have the I/O Board, so I won't bother. The game can be had for about 20,000 yen though. Have you played Chippoke Ralph on the Playstation? Definitely worth the dough.
Unfortunately due to my lack of knowledge when it comes to the Japenese language, I ve traditionally stayed clear of JP titles. Was Chippoke Ralph released in US/PAL?
Nope, but you don't have to read the 10-15 lines in the game to enjoy it. If you're avoiding NTSC-J games due to language barrier, you're missing out on a world of fun: Ralph: http://www.gamengai.com/gm_inf.php?gm_id=1054 Here's a rather large video of yours truly clearing it: http://www.super-play.co.uk/index.php?content=2&gameid=169 Others: http://www.gamengai.com/gm_inf.php?gm_id=484&l=e http://www.gamengai.com/gm_inf.php?gm_id=1241&l=e http://www.gamengai.com/gm_inf.php?gm_id=1117&l=e http://www.gamengai.com/gm_inf.php?gm_id=1108 http://www.gamengai.com/gm_inf.php?gm_id=1127 <-- this got an obscure Euro release I think http://www.gamengai.com/gm_inf.php?gm_id=1149 http://www.gamengai.com/gm_inf.php?gm_id=597&l=e
Play-Asia has Chippoke Ralph for $100 preowned. is that the usual going rate? I watched the first couple levels of your video. the game looks awesome. you were beastin' those monsters... and the old dudes throwing stuff out windows...
Play Asia's used prices suck Johnson. It's usually much cheaper... I think I sold a few of them for $70 in excellent shape. They pop up on Yahoo Japan every now and again. In fact, I think someone found some dead stock. You could probably get a sealed one for that price after the fees and whatnot of a middle man. It is indeed a fun game... a bit long for my tastes, but good, nonetheless. The fighting stages are kind of stupid though.
