Super Smash Bros. Melee is an all time favourite of mine. The game is very hard to pick up for most people but I came to appreciate its capricious nature and difficulty the more I played. I had to become better to better the game. With all that in mind and tons of excitement I snatched a copy of Brawl for my Wii. I ve only recently had a chance to play the game (3 days that I m playing actually). Finished Subspace Emissary, only 2 characters left to unlock, Played 2 matches online (more on that later), tried some of the Events and even tried Brawl mode with some friends who are new to Super Smash Bros. I ll start off with my general complaint: Gameplay. What the hell? I boot the game, get into a match and my character is slow. The movement is off-sync , the moves don't connect as they used to and they 've got different balancing done. I felt lost, and not at home at all. Finished classic mode in normal and easy with a bunch of characters to get a feeling of the classic mode. Classic Mode didn't really click (I can't spot the reason, might be due to controls). then I head on to smash some CPUs in multi. First thing I notice is that although I ve set the item generator to HIGH,it's nowhere near the speed of HIGH in Melee! Secondly, the items seem lacking and not that menacing compared to Melee's! They ve dumbed down many of the items, including the Red Shells, the Screw Attack and the exploding crate. Many of the cool items have been removed completely! Multiplayer didn't click either, the game felt slow, formulaic and unexciting for the most part. Then I head to the Story mode - Fuck it, it's too long and isn't justified in wasting so many FMVs - they're nice but they don't make a lot of sense really, since the story is ASS. I wish they would just have kept the Adventure mode of Melee. Finally, I tried online. I didn't get the chance to play with any added friends thanks to the retarded friend codes thing. Nevertheless I got into some Basic Brawl where lag and sluggish gameplay made it unplayable for me. Lost was the fluidity and charisma where you could predict the other party's moves and bounce-offs. To conclude, Brawl is easy as cake. Much easier than Melee in every respect unfortunately. The engine's pace is slow. This might be because they knew that Melee-class speed wouldnt be possible online, so they decided to make it slower both online and offline. It might even be the gadamn HAVOK engine they're using - who knows. The point is that the gameplay suffers, becomes too slow and predictable. 100% damage used to mean something - red alert. Now you ll need to reach 200% for someone to kick you out of the stage! Also, where did the tags go?! You used to get all sorts of bonus/bad points for things u did during the fight (Stale moves, home-run KO etc) in Melee. There has been a reversion to the N64 bare-bones structure in Brawl to my dismay. On a positive note, I m really liking the level editor mode, although the items and slowness greatly decrease the playability compared to Melee. It's no secret that I m a sick hardcore Melee player. I stubborned myself into beating all events, all difficulties , all trophies , all everything. Multiplayer was a game of lighting-fast chess with platforming thrown in for good measure! Unfortunately Brawl so far hasn't shined. I hope that it will pick up when I get to play against some old Melee players. So which one do you prefer? Brawl or Melee? I d like to hear the reasons as well PS: All said and done, it's a great game with tons of content. The gameplay has been pacified, so whoever didn't like Melee because it was too hard or something, then u ll feel great with Brawl. The aforementioned aren't issues you ll be facing if you aren't a technical/hardcore Melee player - to most they re identical or similar.
Brawl. Melee is fun but I like Brawl a ton more, it's just plain fun. I don't give a fucking shit about damage percentages and MLG and counters. I just give a shit about driving off edges as Wario.
Melee is definitely more competitive. and in melee it's easy to separate good players from bad ones. in Brawl, pretty much anyone can pick it up and beat someone due to the randomness of the game. one of the main things that bugs me about brawl is player recoveries (some are just INSANE), and the random tripping. i wanna play with you Bar0deo but my copy of Brawl is being borrowed. i don't know if we'd have any luck anyways. i've tried online a lot and have never had a playable game. TONS of lag.
I heard some tard in a Gamestop talking about that when it came out, what the fuck is it? Is it what it sounds like? I don't think it's happened to me.
it's totally random. it probably happens to me about 2-3 times a match. i can't really explain it any differently than just randomly while you're running around you trip and fall.
Me and barcode had some good matches. It was basically me sucking, us missing each other because of the lag, and me taunting with the word COCK over my head.
it was good fun knowing that I was against a real person, especially someone from the boards too bad u cant really communicate with the other parties on the Wii . Anyway, who's next?
Items are for noobs :110: Seriously though, a lot of vet Melee players are pissed off because there is practically no hitstun, L-canceling is gone, wavedashing is gone, combos are nonexistent, the characters "float", there's too much DI, etc, etc. I don't know, I like both. Brawl isn't Melee 2.0, but I still like it.
no, they re an extra factor for dealing projectile damage. I m a marth player PS: I just noticed that in order to send a custom level to a friend you need to have their Wii console AND friend code registered!!! ..and Nintendo will charge you 1 Wii point for every custom level sent
2 marths dueling in Melee with items on high, any level and strategy = fight-o-platforming game nuff said ;P
Seriously, having items on puts a different (non-competitive) spin on the game but if you're going to play with anyone who's actually good at Smash Bros, 99.9 percent of the time items will be off, unless they are just messing around. I'm talking about the kind of people who do tournaments, know advanced moves, etc. I have yet to play with anyone like that who plays with items on.
in melee we always played items off, final destination, 4 stock and like a 7 or 8 minute time limit. it was awesome.
Well depends on your style of fighting really. Some people like the head-on battle type, whereas I prefer the hit and run fashion, and taking advantage of the terrain etc. Seeing that you prefer no items and final destination for example, says alot about your style too. I personally play ALL but the Ice Climbers level on Melee. I do advanced moves and I must be pretty good to have unlocked everything etc. so I won't agree that the "good players" are only those who play no items and simple levels - they just defy the whole purpose of the game, which is to include items, weird platforming AND fighting, not fighting alone. Borman, give us your nickname and friend code!
I play whatever. I'm not the best but if I really try I don't suck. It's all about the fun and making me laugh, so whatever. I love Samus. The WFC lag made it pretty hard to actually defend against Barcode. =/ I think I still would have lost but maybe I would have been able to at least dent him. Of course I did carry him off the ledge's with King Dedede and DK a few times.
