Yeah, that's a trait unique to him only. o_O

Well, the guy took a company bottom of the stack to most wealthy in the world based on aesthetics... most of the time for what I considered vastly inferior products until about the end of the XP life cycle.

We're internet nerds. We dont' mind ugly. We want functional... wacky shit . Fuck, half the people here would rather have low-res CRTs than flat screens. Face it, collectively we have no clue what the public wants. We'd be terrible at his job. I know I would... that's why I've never bothered to learn X-Code and build an app. He was great at wrapping products and making them appealing.

Its what I do best

Anyway, While I hate apple as a corporation, I love the computers they make. Maybe Steve was an ass, but maybe that just means he knew how to run a business. Apple was almost dead until Steve returned. And like others have said, he's still a human being, who has died, so people really should show some respect.

You thought all Apple fans were hipsters before? It will only be worse now that Steve Jobs is underground.

Best way I can describe Steve Jobs is that he was the greatest carnival barker of all time. He didn't invent the games and they might be a bit of a rip off but he got people to play. Again and again and again.

True, to an extent. All I have to do is start thinking about how to make something cheaper while allowing me to be lazier and I can imagine products that would sell like hotcakes. Sounds extremely misanthrope but it seems to be reality.

The man was like a lawyer, you were happy to have him because he was the best at what he did, you didn't mind his products because they were polished, and you didn't mind him dating your daughter because goddamn he was rich. But to actually tolerate his presence at a meal you needed to be shitfaced.

If that's all there was to it, then why don't you (or any other number of people) do it? I agree, Apple computers are over priced, but, you are paying for something. I've had my MBP crap out once (2 years out of warranty) and an iPhone once (in warranty). I walked in and had them both fixed for free, the former in about 2 days (known video card issue) and the latter just bad luck. The machine was also Japanese, and the first incident was in the states. In both cases, I travelled less than 2 miles from my locale to an Apple store. Name any Windows machine you can do that with.

As for him being a dick... I know for a fact Michael Dell is a cheap mofo. Tips waiters 15% on the nose. Doesn't tip valets.

But how many times have you had dinner w/ him? I'm not saying it's not true, but why would you make a personal claim about someone you don't personally know... and hasn't made a career out of being a dickhead, like some TV personalities and stars.

Messed up the phone industry? Didn't he do that back in the 70s? Wasn't that the whole precursor to Apple being formed? Don't forget, Jobs and Woz were phreakers originally!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFURM8O-oYI

Whatever you think of Jobs and Apple, you can't deny that he and Woz, and now the other boffins at Apple, have created some great items along the way. The blue box forced telephone companies to improve the phone lines, they made the first true home computer, they launched Mac OS (and Microsoft copied their GUI concept to make Windows), they created Breakout - a very successful and often copied game, the iMac made the computer look like more than just a beige box. Then there's the iPod and iPhone - sure, they weren't exactly new products, but they were successful.

OK, Woz may have been the more technically minded of the two, but you still need a sales person, a marketing genius, an accountant, someone on the phones breaking down doors, a spokesman. Steve Jobs did all that superbly. And let's not forget that he took Pixar from a small, experimental studio to the huge film production company it is today. Without his money, there would be no Toy Story.

You don't have to invent the wheel to be a success. Sometimes reinventing it is enough. And the two Steves reinvented many wheels, and took them forward.

People have their flaws. Walt Disney was sexist and refused to allow female animators on his staff. Julie Garland (and many other actors) were drug addicts. Roman Polanski had sex with underage girls. We may not agree with these flaws of theirs, but they have all been part of teams that created great products. And yes, none of them were solely responsible for these products - they worked as part of a team and had their responsibilities, just as Woz and Jobs did. And, whilst arrogance and short temper with staff aren't nice qualities to deal with, I'm sure he was probably thinking of the product, striving for perfection.

So, just like the RIP threads I post, I'll use this space to pay tribute to Steve Jobs, not criticize his flaws.

RIP Steve - you brought us some amazing products and made us look at things in new ways.

RIP, I'm not a big Apple fan by any means but can't deny that they, for example, gave the phone industry a major kick in the ass in a time when everyone was still using shitty Nokia Symbian phones.

I just wonder if this is the beginning of the end for Apple's period as the media darling of tech companies, considering how much unprecedented negativity there was towards the 4S.

I think it's a sad day. Even if some of you didn't like him, he (along with his market failures) gave the right directions to the technology that we use nowadays. I will not spend a lot of words on this, but Rest In Peace Steve.

I woke up to this news, while grabbing a drink. I didn't know he was THAT ill. Especially at his age it's really sad. I used to dislike him too, but he did boom industry and was a very good public speaker.

Very sad day indeed, doesn't need to be plastered all over the media and my facebook feed though.. Let this guy rest in peace.

Meh looks like that transplant etc he had was for nothing.

I'm sure he had his innovations whatever they may be, but due to convergence or other issues if Steve didn't do them, someone else would have as his innovations were evolutionary, not revolutionary.

IMO the only cool thing he did was bring Apple up to have more cash reserves than the US government - but he did that by ripping off a buttload of people with his severely bloated prices, yet somehow whatever marketing bullshit they had seemed to work and people pay the price gladly.

He was probably the most popular conman of recent times, if not the most successful and rightly or wrongly, that is how I will prefer to remember him. I haven't noticed or heard how he died though, I'm guessing it was in his sleep or something?
