So I FINALLY got my PS2 TOOL, got it home and it appears to damaged, (the steel casing where the dvd drive is, is bent, and the top is loose), none of this really concerns me as I am going to take it apart and make images of the 2 drives, so I will fix it when I do that!!

    My problem is this:-

    • I can't login to linux single or tool single, I have read every thread in this forum over the past couple of weeks to learn how to do it and it all seemed fairly simple!!

    Here's what Ive done:-

    • At lilo boot I typed tool single, it loaded all this data and got to the bash#, I typed in passwd root, (as per the instructions in this forum),

      I got:-
      Changing password for user root
      New UNIX password: xxxxxx
BAD PASSWORD: it is based on a dictionary word
      Retype new UNIX password: xxxxxx
      PAM_pwdb[157]: password for (root/0) changed by((null)/0)
passwd: all authentication tokens updated successfully
      bash#

    So then I typed:
    login
    I then got_ login:

And here's where I get stuck!:-( What's the bloody login?? I've tryed my password then my password for the password, I've tryed Linux then the password, I've tryed Linux single, tool, tool single, UNIX, PAM_pwdb[157], user root, root!!!:banghead:

I know it shouldn't be this bloody hard to get it running, lots of peolpe have done it on here!!
I have read all the tutorials and every stick of information I could find on here but :crying: arrrrggh, it's soooo frustrating!!!

Thanks for any help, and I do realize that password reset instructions have been asked before, but there's no mention of what the bloody login is!!!!

Topics with a subject of "Pleeeeease HEEEEEEELP!!!" is pretty annoying. :-(

Please change it to a more descriptive one such as "Stuck - Unable to reset root password for PS2 Tool".

I'm sorry to say but logging in is Unix 101. I suggest finding some tutorial/book to get yourself familiar with Unix/Linux shell/administration before you get in too deep with your new hardware. It'll save you frustration down the road.

    Agreed.

If you're having this much trouble just getting root you are just going to hit bump after bump getting anything else out of the machine.

    I did warn you!

It's a matter of finding the right book. Unix for Dummies has chapter 1 devoted to logging in.

Try this, there is a battery on the MechaCon board try changing it, and then reset the password again this might do the job.

    http://lorezan.free.fr/ps2/PS2%20Tool%20guide.ppt

download this, check inside, Tools tend to fall to bits in the post.

I've got an advanced Linux Guide, but the Login is always "root", but it's not on my machine!

You really shouldn't be looking at an advanced guide until you know the basics. Logging in, becoming "root" or using sudo are part of system admin basics.

Most system admin tasks need to be done as "root"

I understand all of that, what I'm saying is that "root, Root, ROOT" DOES NOT WORK!!

This suggestion may be obvious, but anyway: after resetting the password, did you restart the TOOL in multi-user mode? As in: ignore the LILO prompt (do not press any key while it is being displayed), then let the TOOL boot until it displays the login prompt on its own.
You are already logged in as root in single-user mode, so there is no point in trying to log in again. Besides, you can't do anything interesting, because communication with the PS2 requires networking, which (at least on the installations I have seen) is only started in regular/multi-user mode.

Odds are if the case was damaged that severely there's probably internal
    client side damage as well.

That's something I haven't tryed! Oh wait, yes that worked, I think! I got another bash# box, but it's different! So how do I get into the file browser and stuff?

Maybe this helps you, your transcript says:

BAD PASSWORD: it is based on a dictionary word

That means, changing password to your desired pw does not work as your pw is inside a bad password list. Try something less obvious like ASDa431# or something. You should no longer get this error and the system should change the password now. That is a general protection against brute force attacks on the system and shitty passwords allowing these to succeed.

Hope this helps. What kind of *ix are Tools running btw.? Maybe you can also try to "cat /etc/passwd" to see the users at the system and maybe you can also can paste the output of "mount" if it gives you any, so we can see if there is anything mounted or single user mode is only a external recovery mode here.
