It was really a security hole? MIL-CDs were developed by SEGA to be a "multimedia" disc running on CDs (not GDs), right? Looking at this angle, booting mil-cds is more a feature than a bug.

As for the difference between a GD and a GD-R, what's the difference between a Saturn CD and a CD-R or a PlayStation CD and a CD-R? One has the necessary security code to pass the boot checks on a retail system while the other does not.

I can't pull this off my head now, but GD-R doesn't have a "lower density" track, right?

It was a huge security hole as native DC code was never supposed to run from CD-R media. And yes, its discovery made for quite a few unhappy people within Sega. Stuff like this is simply not supposed to make it past QA.

I especially wasn't impressed with the way Sega handled this security issue in their updated firmware. To bypass the new "fix" and still pass control over to IP.BIN, now you had to start the disc with a 4 sec data track instead of a 4 sec CDDA track. Now that fix solved the problem with those knock off CD-Rs in HK and China for a loooong time.....

BTW, how was the MIL-CD applications developed? There's a dev kit for its development either?
