Not soon enough. Not unless we actually, you know, start putting money into the space program. Which, sadly, NASA gets a fraction of a percent of our budget.

Why no one in "power" understands that the only way to preserve our species is to NOT be holed up in one spot is beyond me.

Anyone who has played DOOM should know that we should stay the fuck away from Mars.

It is perfectly plausible to have a very long, indeed career long discussion about astrological predictions & past events without one solitary mention of any 'higher' being. Trust me, the vast majority of scientists manage it without effort, thus perhaps we should refrain from injecting it into the current discussion. No offense, but it's truly not required.

In the grand scheme of things, anything we do today in this regard is just another little baby step. I have no doubt though that within 500 years we'll have colonies on other planets in the solar system, and quite possibly have faster than light travel.

If we're talking about protecting the species from astronomical catastrophies, we've got plenty of time. These things are measured in geological time. An asteroid hits the earth roughly every 50 million years or so, or the sun will go nova in another billion years. Plenty of time to figure out warp drive.

Even if planet killing asteroid does hit the Earth, I have no doubt some semblance of mankind would survive it, depending on how much warning we had. Life for the survivors would be really terrible, but they could survive it.

Things are slowly getting to be commercial and China and India have interests in space, which will either lower the cost or push the USA into placing more funding into it.

Once a new propulsion system is developed we will see large steps being taken. I don't think we will ever break the light barrier though.

None of us have to worry about living in space, on the moon, or on mars. In our life time we won't make any of those really viable. You might be able to make an extension from earth, but it will always be dependent on the Earth for supply. Mars is the only possible alternative. And would you really want to live on Mars or somewhere? That would suck.

My solution is we kick all the assholes off the Earth and then we don't have to leave. :p

Ii don't think i'll get too worried just yet... but I suppose the point of it is that you just don't know what's around the corner, live to the max etc...

Assember, ffs, I had resisted the urge to buy a PS3 as I was being 'sensible', if there's a chance I'm going to be vapourised, may as well take the plunge now.

Thx :D have justification for the mrs!!!!

From the wikipedia article mentioned earlier

"damage by a gamma ray burst would be very limited because of its very short duration, and the fact that it would only cover half the Earth, the other half being in its shadow."

So its not that bad... only half of us are fucked!!

...Or 90% "....reducing the global population to perhaps 10% of what it can now support"
