Well, it isn't exactly a spam post, but you seem to like writing giant essays about stuff and then copy and paste them to every forum you join...
Other than Franz Ferdinand, most new bands don't offer anything of any redeeming value in both musical and stylistic fields, the main reason I'm still stuck with pre-1975 Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, Joy Division and the lot of 90s britpop and FAC51 stuff.
I think their are more 'good' games comming out these days then back in the "good old days" (as people like to call the 2d era), but far fewer 'great' games. As for music, These days it just works differently then it did back then. Back in the (again) "good old days" it was all about awsome mainstream bands with consistently good stuff, but these days its all about one hit wonders and underground bands.
Yeah, a poke in the ribs is all fun and games until you get someone who was born without a few ribs and then you notice that all this time you've been poking him in the goddamned SPLEEN, and then you feel like a real asshole. GAH, I've got A Night At The Opera on LP sitting here on my shelf, how could I forget Queen? And Bowie too for that matter. While we're on the topic of older groups, all due respect must be paid to the unforgettable sound of Tom Petty (with and without the Heartbreakers) and the might of The Clash. Coheed And Cambria is... well, start with a sprawling science fiction backstory that's half Star Wars: A New Hope and half Battlestar Galactica. Spread over three albums, with two more to come. Add amazingly technical guitar work, like Dream Theater or Metallica only - you know - actually good and interesting. Add a vocalist with a range that could rival Freddie Mercury and who looks like THIS (you can't get anymore rock and roll than that)and... well, nothing more needs to be said, really. Hit up their purevolume page for a decent sampling of their awesome power.
Man, one way to automatically get me to hate something is say it's like Dream Theater. Why: That song about stem cell research. I mean, I think Dream Theater is extremely talented, but I just can't tolerate any song of theirs with lyrics in it. Man, I hate that song about stem cell research. It's all I ever think about whenever I hear Dream Theater (and I have a roomate who's a huge dream theater fan). Metallica rocks though. And, as it turns out, I have heard Coheed and Cambria before. Pretty good. I know I like it...but I'm not really into it...if that makes any sense. I want to be into it though...so maybe I'll listen to it awhile longer.
That's why I said like Dream Theater, only good. I've never cared for any of their music - they always struck me as having a fairly self absorbed attitude, and their songs seemed designed around just showing off their talent with the instruments. Nothing wrong with that, aside from the fact that, though technically impressive, the songs were just freaking DULL. So the comparison was made on the basis of excellent guitar work, not on the craptitude of the music.
Coheed and Cambria is usually pretty nice, although every so often I'll hear "omg life=teh pain" sort of lyrics from a song. Then again, most music has that sort of stuff, so it's not like I can hold it against them. The singer's hair is indeed awesome. I was never really impressed by Dream Theater. I'm not much of a guitar person, and I think Danny Carey (Tool) beats Mike Portnoy by a long shot. As for rap, I think I actually like Mr. Kanye West's new song. In fact, the one about "blood diamonds" (or something to that effect) was pretty nice, too. He's one of the only rap musicians that writes music that doesn't revolve around guns and bling-bling.
I'm not too keen on the "my life is awful, I have it so bad" trend in rock songwriting lately either, but Co&Ca have what I consider to be a decent excuse - as each album is part of a larger story told from the point of view from a variety of characters rather than from the band themselves, the OMG EMO vibe comes from the story rather than some intolerable hurt the singer thinks he's dealt with. Which, in a sense, is merely abstracting the issue, but it's still one step removed from the norm.
The only Dream Theater song I ever cared for was Acid Rain. A huge reason I don't like Them much is most of there songs lasts about 30 minutes! Too freaking long, especially when half the music is like wind noises.
I was about to say Opeth isn't much better, but they actually have "full" songs, for the most part. That, and they're one of my favorite bands. I think the longest Opeth song I heard was "Black Rose Immortal", clocking in at around 20 minutes long.
Doh, I missed the "only" after Metallica. Oh, I feel I should point out that New Metallica is awful. Saint Anger is the worst CD (And Song Title) ever.
I've never heard Saint Anger, but I had some black metal that would rival Hanson in terms of suckitude. I'll refrain from posting what most of the songs were about. On that note, I have some awful techno I bought at the same time as the other CD. Luckily I only paid $1.50 for the whole lot.
Well, I don't know. I like a lot of new music, and I'm not afraid to say that some of my favorite bands are emocore. Stuff like Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, Straylight Run, Finch, etc. I think they're great. BTW, Finch's new album "Say Hello to Sunshine" is weird. I like it, but it's nothing like "What it is to Burn".
Actually, I've started listening to a bit more "emo" music than I normally do. Senses Fail have been my latest listening experience. Try Alexisonfire - they're easily one of my favorite emo bands.
isnt alexisonfire the group with the singer that doesn't sing, but rather scream and shake like a crazy epilectic kid on a high of cocaine? This guy make me laugh everytime i see it. on my side, im listening alot of alternative and experimental these days. Things such as Don Davis (techno-orchestral, mostly), Kraftwerk (very old techno (known mostly for zombie nation) with extremly precise and thought beats), nirvana and system of a down (geniuses). im sure i forget alot of names though.
I'll agree that most mainstream music has been in a slump for the last couple of years but System of a Down's Mezmerize fuck'n rocks.
George is the "screamer", but Dallas actually sings (and is damn good at it, too, in my opinion). Wade does a bit of both, but excels in neither. "Emo" is pretty much characterized by some kid who screams into the microphone, hence the other name "screamo."
