I have been talking to a certain MFG and they have been prodded into
make one last large batch of these chips.

    Anyone interested?

Seems like the era of the Saturn mod chip is ending.

Im certainly interested in purchasing a single unit if the batch goes ahead, my Saturn has just died and I will be purchasing a new one soon, only this time i'm going all out and planning to make it fully import and back up compatible.

I don't see the point. I've been using the swap method for several years now and I've never had any problems. The downside to it is that it takes slightly more effort to boot up a game, but the upside is that it requires only minimal tampering with the insides of the Saturn.

Also, as far as playing imports goes, why not just get an imported Saturn? Mine was only 20USD.

How much are the chips? I've been using the swap trick on the same Saturn for over 10 years without a single problem. Some wonderful drives in those Saturns! However it would be nice to just plonk in a disc. Can the mod chips run CDR discs as well?

The modchips ONLY enable you to run CD-Rs, you will still need an Action Replay based device to play imports.

Also I don't understand what the "chip" is that they're making. Saturn "modchip" (really, it's 3 chips and optionally an oscillator) are composed of all off the shelf programmable parts, the PCB and ribbon connectors must be what's not being produced anymore. I would rather instead get a bunch of cheap connectors since those seem to be custom.

    Is this manufacturer XGA?

Is it a 21-pin chip or a 20/21-pin combo chip?

My saturn died a month or so ago most likely due to disc swapping, though I must have been rougher then the rest of you since I only did it maybe 50 times total(and that is pushing it) over the past 4 years.

So I would probably pick one up if they could be installed semi-easily.

These are round button chips, and I'd rather pay the few dollars than hunt down off the shelf parts, have to make a circuit, install it, and solder about 40 wires because there's no ribbon cables..

I'm checking need, because I'll probably have to buy 500 of them
to make them do it. But I am pretty sure it's totally worth it to
    have a stash of these.

If they're easy to install and relatively cheap, and allow me to play CDr games, I'll buy one.

What are the volume discounts? there will always be a need for them, so this can be an investment for some ;-).

The discounts aren't much this is pretty much a favor.

I am contemplating asking them to be made for old oval button machines.

I'm going to have to lay out about $1000 for these chips, but I am sure they will sell eventually.

I'd love a few model 1 chips but model 2 are still fairly easy to get ahold of if you don't mind shelling out the cash.

As for installation current chips require you to:

    1)Yank ribbon from mobo.
2)Jump solder pad that previously had a wire soldered to it and a chip on the board
    3)Insert ribbon into chip
    4)Insert chip into mobo

Of course there are different revisions of the saturn and cd board that may make the chip unable to do its job, I've heard of problems with 64pin saturns and sanyo based cd boards.
