The many unusual types of TEST and TOOL Playstation 3

As there is a thread for PS2s, I thought we should have one for PS3s.

There are quite a few test PS3s around, originally they were the original 60GB models (DECHA00x) with all the chips which meant after a few firmware upgrades they could play PS2 with hardware emulation which meant they were the only machines that could play PAL PS2 games in hardware...

Later models (DECHJ00x) were based on the later models so you lacked the memory card slots, the 2 usb ports and the hardware emulation. By default they came with 40gb hard drives.

Prototype machines tended to be one of the above but were not certified, apart from that they have no differences to standard machines, the original prototype machines do not have the test logo on them and had several stickers at the bottom.

There are slimline test units too (DECH2x00x), these tend to be harder to find in the wild but they do exist, they lack the same functions as the slim line machines do.

Show / exhibition machines tend to lack the test marking on top of the machines and will have an S prefix in them.

Demostration units are another type of test/debug unit, the main difference is that they have a special firmware which is mean to lock out most functions of the unit, so only the game on the unit can be played and a few other function like photo viewing is possible. Not all demostration units are debug machines (as later ones were standard units with the special firmware) and the only way to tell is by looking at the model number sticker.

Different prototype models:

DEH-H10001-D
DEH-H1000A(S)-E
DEH-BH1100A-B

I think DEH-H1000A(S)-E is the most common one and has more see-through plastic.
If anyone knows anything about either version that'd be cool.

 

There's also a DECHSA00A, this is a Blu-ray only test system. Says 'TEST' on the front like the others, but will only play Blu-ray movies, doesn't even have the Game icon on the XMB. (Used for movie studios and such for Blu-ray movie development)

 

Anyone knows the model DECHA007A? Seem that not much info on internet.

This might be interesting, shows many different versions of TEST and TOOL PS3.

 

That just shows the various types of TOOLs not TESTs.

 

Forgive my lack of knowledge here, but I remember someone on here selling a PS3 TEST/TOOL with 2 Ethernet ports.

Which model was that? I'm guessing a very early one.

 

Any model with two ethernet ports is a TOOL. If it looked like a TEST then it was a DECH-1400A.

@Jamtex none of the shop/demo/kiosk consoles are and have ever been debug consoles, they are retails with another firmware, they all have their respective regions' target ids as well.

Nowadays sony only sell DECH-2500A/JS and DECR-1400A/J (A for Europe/USA, J for Japan)
Any older type of DECH unit is depreciated, same for DECR-1000 and they are no longer sold from SCE.
Only "S" types of DECH consoles are sold nowdays, they are the ones without the "TEST" markings, the DECH-2000A that still had them have only been sold for a short period of time (3 to 6 months) and thus only exist in a limited amount.

DECHA and DECHJ are no longer produced or sold (sony still have DECHJ stockpiles and are ship some some rare occasions to meet leasing agreements though), they also get back DECHA and DECHJ units at the end of the leasing contracts which usually end up signed up for destruction.

Any slim consoles that will ship out from sony (at this time) will be DECH-2501AS models. (DECH-2000A/J are out of stock and no longer produced)

Nah there is more rare than that system debuggers for instance

you found the 1° Category Prototype (CEB & DEH) but the first prototype version are CEB... moren likely as DEH to is aprox. the same as RETAIL...

but aslo the FINAL KIT not is bad...
