You're gonna be getting some good offers I imagine. I'm more surprised to hear about Monkfish. That guy really made a lot of people happy by releasing something that was otherwise not seeing the light of day anytime soon. I'm sure among us hardcore geeks he won't be forgotten About this console, was this anything that was publicly announced in any form? It seems like most planet names got associated with Sega at one time or another as console codenames, so I'm sure I must have read about a Sega Pluto numerous times back then, but a lot of magazines tended to associate any codenames they got as being for Sega's next console. Did they have numerous things using this name? Since you mentioned that Nomad thing(no idea about that one). Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Bramsworth. I'm glad he was able to share stuff with everyone. I'm pretty sure the Pluto was never announced. I'm not sure what the plans were for it, since I joined Sega right after the Dreamcast launch, and at that time, most of the Saturn-era people were already gone.
RIP Monkfish Mmmmm.... I don't have words right now...maybe...maybe...maybe this had some add-on power up. It looks too much to that supposed Black Belt proto Super Magnetic referenced some posts ago.. Damn this is VERY hardcore! P.D= on the pic labeled as PHOTO 3...mmmmmm maybe unscrewing that upper part...can it be a 3D Card?
Amazing! Thank you so much!! Could this one are related in some way with this hardware? Is a terminal for Pluto. I never understand it, but I think now it would make a lot more sense...
Yes he would get a good offer. I would pay alot of money for this awesome kit. I would pay a Grand if I have to. I think this proto device worth more than a grand. Again, sorry loss of your friend. 40 is not old and it sad not to be with his two daughters.
Wow, this is truly incredible. thank you so much for sharing. Also, very very sorry to hear about Monkfish! I don't know if it's any consolation, but I don't think he will be forgotten in this corner of the internet dedicated to preservation and history of games and hardware due to his involvement with geist force, and opening himself up to questions. Which reminds me - I might be getting this confused, but I think Monkfish mentioned a colleague of his was in possession of Dee Dee Planet (unreleased DC game). I don't suppose this would be you by chance?
Ryo Suzuki -- That disc most likely would be related to the Pluto hardware! Do you have a copy of it, or know where to get the iso? If so, I'd definitely like to try testing it out and see what happens. Thanks everyone for the words about Monkfish. I'm glad he's remembered! dark -- I think I might have Dee Dee Planet somewhere, but it would be in my stash in America, which I'm far away from now. When I get a chance to go back, I'll dig through the vaults and see what I can find.
That render of the white Pluto is mine, and I still have it. I saved it from being binned when I was working at Sega Europe. I mistakenly thought it was a Dreamcast concept because of the colour and timing, but I guess now we know. I guess I worked at Sega at exactly the same time as Super Magnetic (did we both work on the localized version of that game??). I'll reach out to someone who might know more backstory on Pluto, can't guarantee and answer though. What can be confirmed is that SOE knew about this project. It won't work, you'll need a Blue System disc to load it. Good new is that the CDR's are region free should you find one. I only have a black system disc. That white image of the Pluto is mine, I saved it from the bin when I worked for Sega Europe. So I guess we have evidence of all territories being aware of this project now.
This's too awesome. Now if only someone found a real prototype snes, with nes backward compatibility and those cool red button control pads.
Dreamcastmaster, thanks for the information. I don't have a system disc unfortunately. Interesting to hear that SoE was in on the Pluto as well. When I saw the white case in that image, I assumed it was from Japan.
Seems we worked for Sega during the same time period. Did we also both work on the localized Super Magnetic Neo? I've already reached out to someone who might know more about Pluto.
I was there for the whole span of the DC (working on online stuff). I didn't work on Super Magnetic Neo directly, I just loved the game. It'll be cool to see what information you might be able to dig up!
I would love that! There is still a very active dreamcast fan base that goes nuts for any shred of information about beta and unreleased items - and just anything that further fleshes out the history and dreamcast timeline. I'd also recommend talking to assembler directly if you have any interest in preserving some of these items.
Yeah, that can only be a Pluto mockup. The dimensions are slightly different (the prototype is bigger on the right side where the NetLink is), and of course, the case color is different, but it's pretty much identical.
Thank you for sharing and sorry to hear your friend lost out to cancer. My mum had breast cancer, she recovered and is now heavily involved in the breast cancer council (she was on the news the other night). She said it sucked having it, but wouldn't have it any other way as she values life more and has done things she wouldn't ordinarily do. Anyway, do you know of any employee's who were "long term" as in say had been there since 8bit or 16bit days?
Can you tell if the cabinet is off tool or CNC? No way to tell of a picture but if this is made from real plastics and not just a painted resin mockup then there's an indication of how close it got to market. If the black is painted on, matt so it could be off a tool. Give it a little scratch in a discrete area to see if it clear/cream plastic or solid black underneath. If it's CNC be very careful as it's much more brittle then plastic and I would not risk opening it.
