I don't know what to make of it. The originating web site is itself very strange and early 90s looking. It lists a ton of SEGA press releases, and then the article in question sounds like pure speculation to me, although somewhat informed.

RingEdge and RingWide are both PC-based arcade platforms, stronger and weaker flavors. The new 20-player AM2 mech game "Border Break" runs on RingEdge.

The article has nothing to back up its unheard-of claims of multiple generations of secret consumer hardware plans, all during a phase when that type of thinking was supposed to be dead within SEGA.

SEGA's not in a position to take risks like that any more. They already seem to be slowly dying. I don't think they could compete with the Wii brand among the masses.

If it happened, its only strength would be SEGA-exclusive titles. While this would be great for us, it has never been enough for the masses, ever.

    they key word being "was"

There is no doubt that SEGA was already underway with the design of a DreamCast successor - I even read a few articles regarding the Hitachi SH5 and how it was going to be an integral part of the next SEGA project, supporting backwards compabitility with the SH4 etc. - yet, considering there's already 3 major competitors out there it would be unreleastic to expect to compete on such a limited budget.

maybe a casual console it's possible..

    who knows..

but i feel the market is gonna change for the next gen.

sony is fucking it up A LOT on ps3, nintendo is "out of the war" with a different kind of public (casual) and microsoft seems to be the kings of the hill on the hardcore market.

who knows what can happen, but i'm sure that the seeming quiet at sega means something..

Earlier in the week we provided you part 1 of our world exclusive report where we brought to light top secret details of SEGA SAMMY's plans of introducing a next generation HD capable casual console based around the RINGEDGE arcade hardware.
Next week FGNOnline shall present to you part 2 of our world exclusive where we discuss SEGA SAMMY's plans of yet another consumer hardware product this time based around the RINGWIDE arcade hardware.
    Stay tuned.

Consumer hardware, now with the Ringwide

I'd love this to be true and would glady accept a new console specifically a sega into the market but for now i don't think this is true.

I'm sure there must be people from within sega who would love them to get back into the console business but i can't see much happening about it.

no way in hell sega is working on a super secret console and some internet warrior knows the specs before the media. that's crazy.

i'm the first one that would buy 4 consoles the same day and turn crazy, attack random people at the street, piss on the next sony consumer shop, puke on the nearest 360 kiosk and say fuck nintendo alout but come on, if sega is gonna make it, we will know it by SEGA.

    oh my god..internet...

I don't know. Sounds likely that Sega were producing follow up hardware. Sega have been in the hardware since the very beginning so I doubt they'd just finish with Dreamcast and leave it at that. I do strongly believe that they have been working on something but I also strongly believe that they will need a miracle to even get a sniff at the current market. In my opinion, they should wait until Sony and Microsoft make their next move, really analyse it (and follow Microsoft's approach that was used this gen) then come down like a tone of bricks pushing their product as hard as hell and not wasting money on sponsoring fucking football teams like the dickheads did in the UK. They'd also need to get some major 3rd party support from the like of EA (yeah, most of us hate them but they will be needed) for the US audience and get Konami and Namco away from Sony. The likes of Capcom will always side with Sega, they did on the Saturn all the way through to the end of Dreamcast.

Of course this will never happen because Sega just don't have the money of Sony or the pushing power of Microsoft in the US :crying: Sega's only chance is if Sony keep their head up their arse and fuck up even more. Then maybe, just maybe they could steal a bit of thunder from Microsoft if going for the hardcore gamer.

Deep Deep down I'd love a new Sega console but now or even next year is probably not the best time unless they have something that would make the PS3 and 360 look like a fisher price toy. Oh and what about network support? They'd really need to get that sorted out before anything. Gamers these days demand a good online service.

Microsoft is and will be the only company to be able to penetrate by such financial brute force. This isn't an option for SEGA, or any company in its right mind actually.

The upside to being Sega is they've already got good R&D departments due to all their arcade business. I'm sure they could make an affordable machine that would do some rockin' shit. The problem is, they've not been a household name for a while...not at the level one needs to be to sell machines. They're basically making games exclusively for one machine if they make it, which is of course, a shotgun blast to the foot if it doesn't sell millions of units.

I for one would love to see a new sega branded console. But lets be fair here, we all know that its not going to happen.
I know many "casual" gamers with Wii's and DS's, I cant see them even considering another brand than Nintendo.

Microsoft should let Sega handle the distribution of the next Xbox in Japan. I think that is as close as Sega should get to hardware.

Let's face it, the Sega of old is dead, and long gone. Releasing a console would probably seal their fate. Look at the states of their games. They are a laughing stock.

This is coming from someone who loved Sega throughout their childhood.
