Well yes, unfortunately that's what it boils down to. Opinions. Personally I don't look for challenge in my games. Though there are games where I do challenge myself in or choose to play on harder difficulties because I like to from time to time. Sometimes it's unwanted. Sometimes it's wanted. Depends really.
Personally, I like arcade games more for the fact that you can jump in and play 1 or 2 credits, then stop, than the challenge. You don't have to spend 15 hours going through mandatory tutorials and unlocking stuff just to really start playing the game, or remember if it was RB + RT + A or LB + X that activated the roundhouse kick. Wish more games had that "pick-up-and-play" quality today.
As I grew older I became less and less interested in fetch-a-thons and more into real challenging gaming mechanics, hence an interest in the old arcade games.
well of course there are non arcade-like home games, but I think there is room for both. There are people who like Braid, where you never stay dead, and people who like Mega Man 9 (very hardcore and arcade-like) or street fighter (which is an arcade game) just because there is more of one, doesn't mean there has to be less of the other. Arcade games and PC games both thrived in the early 90s
Nonetheless. We're not far off from seeing Japanese hipsters-dufii making Youtube videos reflecting on game centers and how their death was necessary for the current standard shit game.
oh fuck sega and vf5. they really brought it upon themselves. read here -- Threaten to sue anyone who tries to publish video footage of VF. Happened with Evo, happened with beat-tribe, most recently happened with POPY Niigata. - Made the game lease-only instead of allowing arcade ops to outright purchase the game. This also made it so that any international arcade ops cannot buy the game.
Did they actually "SAY" they were going to sue, or were they just being bitches? They've had "no videos" signs up on their games for as long as I can remember. Either way, yes, they're whores now.
if you look at this list, you'll see that there have actually been a lot more games released for the Naomi, Chihiro, and Lindberg platforms, than were released for the model 1, 2, or 3. I think we're looking at this through rose colored glasses, and also region specific glasses. The arcades aren't dead, the just moved, and switched audiences, and we got left behind.
Receipts from income? They are on a downward trend and have been for ages. There's a reason why Printclub & UFO catchers are on the first floor of every arcade in the country.
whoops I meant this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sega_arcade_games fair enough, you called me on a bullshit statement. Let me qualify it. They aren't as big as they used to be, but they are still going, and regardless of the money they are making, several manufacturers are actually making more games (like sega)
