You don't need to open it up. The first 3 are easily recognisable, I've come across the LG-Hitachi only once tbh so haven't really paid attention to its tray... ...but I bet it looks like this:
Ok, i just went to power up the xbox to check the dvd drive and it looks like none of the above! it has the shape of the philips and with the two small holes at the extreme ends like the hitachi. Might be a new undocumented drive. *Anyone out there has a later build then my unit? Do share more information on it. I am very reluctance to open a perfectly fine unit. =(
The LG-Hitachi looks nothing like the 360 ones obviously. Although the top part of the DVD Drive's case is the same AFAIK. So I took a picture of my one.
This system wasn't looked after at all. So I'd say it's the best drive to own, it doesn't stick like the Samsung drive either
If I remember correctly in the UK when I worked for Gamestation, the last Xbox consoles I ever saw were made in August 2005 and were easy to identify - packaging wise by the Fifa World Cup 06 support logo in the corner of the box, this drives seemed far 'smoother' in later Xboxes. We never saw any made in 2006 though.
Yup, u cant just seems to buy off the LG-HT drive anywhere, I agree on the Samsung sticking issue. I got one with the 605 and it only reading DVDs... I guess I got take it apart and do some "potting". Will welcome any information on tweaking the pot for the 605... =)
Thanks mate! So right now... We actually got a date and year to it. 08-2005 (Last known production run!) *Anyone having a later date, do feel free to correct us! P.S I got a feeling the last production might be region specific.. Not sure UK, US or asia have seen the last release, but i got a hunch its the UK region.
I have a 1.3 or 1.4 (not sure which) that came with the Samsung drive. Drive was dead and couldn't be resurrected with the laser adjustments. (BOO!!) So much for the Samsung drives being indestructible... I replaced it with the fabled Samsung SD 616t with the hacked firmware for original game disk compatibility. I have another Xbox coming from a member here. I'll check it to see what drive it has as soon as it arrives. I never knew there were 4 DVD drives. Always thought we had the Samsung, Thomson, and Philips drives only. Never heard of the last run having Hitachi drives. Maybe those are even better than the Samsung ones in terms of access times and media compatibility. Anyone ever do a test or know the results of testing?
Thinking about it now... Didn't Microsoft purposely kill off the Xbox in 2005 due to Nvidia demanding too much for the chipset...?
I think Nvidia was no longer producing the chipset after August 2005 since MS wanted to focus on Xbox 360. I looked it up on the Nvidia lawsuit was settled in 2003 so that wasn't the reason why they stopped.
Hmmm, interesting! Judging by your location... Looks like U.K most likely HAVE the last production run.. *BTW great drive u have there...do take care of it..
Yes, that was a 360 I pictured there (as I should've clarified). The small holes on the side now confirm what I've seen back then (ow the old noodle)
I was at a thrift store and i saw this sorry lookin beat up xbox for a few bucks and decided i wanted a beat up model to mod the hell out of it leaving my boxed unit alone. wanted to turn it into one of those media centers like dem fancy boys. got it home and plugged it in and the tray was stuck. opened it up and had to open the entire dvd to fix the mechanism. looked like the previous owner forced it closed warping the gear threads wich was an easy fix. got it bent back in shape and then when i put everything back together opened the tray and the tray would just sit there ejected. darn belt needed replacing. so i instinctively went into the closet where i have a bunch of 360 drives to get a belt from one of them and then it hit me. why am i looking for a 360 drive for a xbox1? ran back to the xbox and sure enough it was a 360 type dvd drive. like in my other thread for the mystery av cord i searched online with no info to be found. thought it was some guys hack to marry a 360 drive onto a xbox1 but the more i looked at the drive the differences were clear. it was slightly different from a 360 drive and the belt used in 360 drive was too small for this drive. i found an o-ring big enough at home depot to use instead. i concluded that since it was a refurbished unit it was probably sent to the repair center close to the end of the systems life cycle and M$ just threw in a 360 type drive into it. i left it alone and forgot about it. now when i saw this thread it all makes sense. looks like a 1.6 and about those early philips drives, they are slow loud crappy things. this a few will know as philips changed the design later on. ive seen the philips drive and it could be contender for the largest laser ever used on a video game console. makes me wonder what those dutch are thinking in this day and age of micronization. that they would use their own outdated ways of making jumbo huge pieces of crap and disregard asian techniques of making electronics. they cant use those drives in other electronics because of the housing has a bulge on the bottom to accommodate such a big laser. it was designed and engineered exclusively for the xbox1. its kinda sad. this is why humanity cant move forward. philips fixed this in later models and used a smaller sanyo or nec laser. again i cant find pictures online of the huge bulge on the housing of the dvd. this type of early xbox may be as rare as the last xbox. my findings change every time i see more xboxs so hopefully im wrong in my assumptions. seems like everytime i open an xbox1 its a new adventure!
