I think that's ridiculous. If you haven't made your money after, say, 30 years, it's someone else's turn. From the social angle, having copyright end benefits society, and those benefits to society are more important than benefiting an individual's bank account.

But hey, I appreciate we aren't going to see eye to eye on this one.

If you haven't made money on it after 30 years, I doubt it's a good product people are interested in anyway, so it's not a problem.

And I dare say it's a tricky situation to decide who's copyrights should be allowed more time and not. We're better off to have general laws for all copyrights.

    How come?

I believe Alchy sees the conversation, as a healthy discussion without we are throwing shit at each other, when we in reality just are exchanging opinions upon the matter. And we have different opinions about such stuff.

I didn't know that yesterday (it was my first time smoking a cigar).

He bought them in Cuba last year, in "La casa del Habano". According to him they weren't cheap cigars.

I actually meant the opposite - if you've made your money after 30 years (or even 20), that should be enough. Let everyone else benefit. The greater good of society should come before than the financial success of the individual.

I appreciate what you're saying. It's mainly the term of the copyright we disagree on ;)

Because you believe copyright terms should extend to 80 years after a person has died, and I don't. It wasn't my intention to make any of this personal, apologies if it came across that way.

    Aren't those the same thing?

Irrespective, happy birthday you mad bastard ;)

Alchy beat me to saying "Happy Birthday you crazy bastard!" - so have a great one, Wolvie, and have a drink and several smokes on my behalf.

29 is... quite a weird age. Have fun in it ( I have less than a month left there...)

Enjoy the end of your youth, sir!

But it isn't society that gains, though, is it, it's the big corporations. If you or I were to release a bunch albums or a stream of songs in our 20's that made us a steady income that would essentially contribute to our pension in our 50's, 60's and onwards, why should those assets be stripped away from us and then resold by the record label who have profited all along and will continue to profit from something that they've not created? Once the copyrighted time has elapsed the rights re-enter the market and should there be enough interest then a bidding war ensues. With music at least, the noble idea that these things enter into the public domain is fanciful at best. You can count the number of unlicensed songs that anyone would wish to cover on the fingers of one foot, if it's free then you can pretty much guarantee that it's completely shit.

In a Utopian society yes, everyone would benefit but sadly in todays fucked up dystopia it's every shareholder and profiteer for himself and to take away a mans (or womans for that matter) only source of possible income from him is nothing more than theft.

Thanks guys. Smoking a cigarette while I am posting it. Oh yeah madness and craziness is something I know, but then again who has not had their crazy moments over the years ? I mean we have grown up with each other over the years, hell Alchy and I have had our fights. But strangely enough I have grown to respect the guy, and believe me. During the Mohammed crisis I wanted to kick his head in a few times, but now. I actually want to have a drink with him, if he drinks alcohol. But Paulo on the other hand, well let us say just my views upon him has not changed a lot at all. But I will keep it civil as long as I need to.

No. Once the copyright term elapses then anyone can sell it. No single entity owns it; that's the whole point. I could open up a printing press tomorrow and print as much Shakespeare as I like. There are exceptions, but these are case by case (see "perpetual copyright"). I think you're talking about the recording rights, which are contract-based and a totally separate issue.

    Unlicensed != out of copyright.

So is tax, if you're of that mindset (and not to beat on the same drum again, but: the benefit of the majority is more important than the riches of the minority). Also, you might want to qualify how a record is anyone's only possible source of income. I presume that there is more to a man's (or woman's) potential to earn than the sales of one album.

God, that's hilarious. And yes, I do drink.

Legalise pot, drink your brains out (if you want to of course), some drugs can be used for good. Hell I am even into thinking heroin/diamorphine should be given to the addicts who really can not kick the habit. Cause addicts who takes the diamorphine from the medication place. Some of them live normal lives besides having that "addiction": Extacy and fantasy are drugs I am not really so keen on, and or for that matter Cocaine. LSD, shrooms are some of those things I think this about, if you really want to fuck yourself up, and get a psychosis (yeah I know you have to be genetic disposed for getting a psychosis), but then again You can even get psychosis from being an alcoholic. But then again some people who has a severe case PTSD seems to get better by getting a small dose of LSD, So again it is a wild world we are having. But legalise pot all the way, cause it does more good than bad. I recently read about a kid (3 year old) who's gave cannabis oil as a supplement to his food, cause the kid had cancer and the chemo fucked him up. And now the kid has beaten cancer, and his appetite is back. Thanks to cannabis oil as a supplement to what he got in his system. I know of a girl in Texas who has fibromyalgia , who would probably benefit if she got cannabis (some strains of sativa), cause I know when she has the pain. Then she is really in a world of hurt. I know some sclerosis patients does not get the hardcore attacks, when they smoke it. Hell even people with Parkinson's disease can probably benefit from it. Cannabis the only drug that has more purposes than any other thing, and I am not joking. You can make bio diesel from cannabis, and you can make alcohol Carl, motherfucking Sagan smoked it. Just because I do not smoke it, then it does not mean. That I am not aware of the many true benefits from cannabis.
