I recently picked up a HD-DVD player (What? I'm a whore for dead formats) and grabbed Mallrats and The Big Lebowski which, AFAIK, neither have BD-ROM releases. Both have the same problem described in that there is an odd grain affect that I'd attribute to inexperienced engineers doing encoding.

From a distance it isn't too noticeable but up close it reminds me of a VHS tape. Given what I have seen of Blu-Rays there isn't much excuse seeing as they've had far more time to get their shit straight.

Grain is probably intentional, just because it's on blu-ray doesn't mean you clean all that away. Many directors want it left in.

The Big Lebowski is on blu-ray but not Mallrats

It looks like garbage, but it's 1080p garbage. We're too stupid to know the difference so, big deal? Sell it to us, say it's the Ghost Busters limited edition and we'll buy it in droves! (>_<)!

The Big Lebowski was recently released on Blu-ray. It's a good release, and it also comes with a little booklet that has trivia about the movie.

The PS3 is a great Blu-ray player. It plays Blu-rays flawlessly (I'm not sure that any less is possible), and it does a really nice job of upscaling DVDs. The one thing that puts it a notch above most other Blu-ray players is that the load times are very short, due to the PS3's power. Another really nice feature is that there are a ton of options for video and audio output, so you can customize it to get the best experience possible given your hardware. Yakumo was recently complaining about how his Blu-ray player would not convert DTS-HD to standard DTS. You can easily change that setting on the PS3. Plus it plays games. Say what you will about Sony, they make some great video hardware - they always have.

EDIT: Something else I just thought of: the PS3 has a really cool remote. It's connected via Bluetooth, which means that it doesn't have to be pointed in the right direction for it to work. This is a nice feature because you can leave the remote on a table and quickly press the pause button if you want to pause the movie. It's a lot more efficient than a regular remote.

There's only certain scenes on the Ghostbusters BD that are grainy. A lot of the shots are GREAT.

I'd compare it to my DVD but I got my ghostbusters BD signed by Dan Aykroyd so it's shadowboxed now lol

Ah, that was me being stupid. The issue was actually with the TV. I had the digital audio going through the TV then in to the amp. Because the TV is only Dolby Digital and not DTS compatable it had issues converting the DTS-HD audio in to normal DTS. I now run the audio direct from the BluRay player in to the amp and everything works fine now.

This puzzled me for quite some time because I had all the settings on the BluRay players set up right. In the end it was a silly connection error.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Still - the PS3 has more manual settings for audio and video than most Blu-ray players.

Man, once you go Blu-ray, you'll never go back. :) I still watch DVDs occasionally, but I always try to get the Blu-ray if there's one available. I will go out of my way to get the Blu-ray version of a movie rather than the DVD. It's so much more cinema-like than DVD. It's not quite cinema quality, but very close. And on an average-sized TV, it's almost as good as watching a movie in a theater (as long as you have a decent amp/receiver too).

I'm currently building the HT room and was quoted Yamaha BDS671 as the choice of BL/DVD player.

When we got the 42" Plasma Screen back in 2000 that was exactly how I felt first time watching Final Fantasy DVD movie... =D
yea the screen cost bomb back then - you could buy entire HT room inc. 3D projector and installation for less money nowadays...

    Panasonic DMP-BD75

Now I'm debating what DVDs I should upgrade to Blu Ray I have the Oldboy collectors Tin but the Blu Ray has all the extras the Tin has.
Choices choices, Is it worth Upgrading Monty Python and the Holy Grail? Princess Bride?

    Mind=not made up.

I'm in the process of upgrading every movie I have to BD, and only keeping the DVDs for movies that aren't on BD like Gremlins 2. The downside is that DVDs are pretty much worthless now, but I can't bring myself to just throw them away either.

You've got that right. Well, unless the Blu-ray is a shitty done one. People seem to forget that you need a very good screen as well. You see many people with no brand screens saying that the image is fantastic. It may be so but compared to a high quality HD screen it won't be. My Sharp Aquos in the living room looks very nice but the Toshiba Regza kicks it's arse from a great hight in terms of vibrant colours fantastic blacks, deep colour and more picture tuning options than even an engineer would want. The high end Toshiba Regza sets really are the ultimate geek sets when it comes to picture tuning. They're also equipped with 4 HDMI ports as well as 4 of pretty much everything else as well apart from VGA. The top end models seem to be missing the VGA ports.

Also as la-li-lu-le-lo said, you need a good sound system. 5.1 at least and with a good range for the cinema feel.

So, a quality screen, quality sound system, a Blu-ray player that will do 24fps (most can AFAIK) and heavy curtains to block out all sunlight is all you need to make a home cinema and the best part is, you can do all of that for quite little money these days. My set up in total cost 110'000 yen (1350 USD / 850 pounds / 1033 Euros) and that's for quality equipment. Well, ok, the sound system isn't going to please the real hardcore audiophile but for the average guy who enjoys quality audio it will sure please. It's by Sony too!!!!!! See, I don't hate all Sony items. :p

Funny that Gremlins 2 isn't on Blu-Ray. I have the first on Blu-ray. Pretty much the same as the DVd as far as extras go which is shit because they even say there are loads of extra scenes which they have but don7t bother showing. There's also the so called network version which includes scenes not in the cinema and home releases.

You know what I don7t get though, why the hell do they make those stupid DVD / Blu-ray double sets? I hate that. It just bumps up the price of the Blu-ray version. If I buy a Blu-ray then I'm not going to want to use the DVD am I. I also don't really see the point in the Blu-ray + Digital Copy. Is that for dumb arses who can't rip t he disc themselves?

I used to watch Blu-Rays on a 19" screen, now I have a 32" one and the smaller screen really doesn't do them justice. Even my current TV isn't optimal for the quality, though.

Yeah, it's weird that Gremlins 2 isn't on BD and neither is Ghostbusters II. I guess the double packs are for people who are on the fence about updating, since they're only a little more expensive than the plain DVD releases anyway.

Not much lost about Ghostbusters II not being on BluRay, hehehe. Still, I will buy it if they fill it full of extra features since the DVD release has next to sod all. The Real Ghostbusters cartoons were nice but really, I already have them plus they don't really have anything to do with Ghostbusters 2.

I actually like Ghostbusters II, sure it's not as good as the first, but it has its moments, especially the part where the Statue of Liberty is controlled by an NES Advantage! Too bad the villain is lame and the ending is anticlimactic, though.

I think we're all better off pretending Ghostbusters II was never made. And EVIL painting UGH
