I am thinking no more, my player arrived today and is working great. The HDMI siwtcher however, is not getting along with my Cable box.

I agree. Today, 99% of the special effects means CGI. There's no effort to create something real. It's even worse when the movie relies only on their special effects instead of having a good story.

The same can be said about Alien, it looks like it could have been shot yesterday.
The latest Blu-Ray I watched was Ben-Hur, the chariot race is amazing in HD, I'll recommend it to anyone.

I got into Blu Ray with the first available player, and got the first BD disks, all MPEG2 they were.

Got a bunch of shelves full of BDs. The new project, once I move all my DVDs onto the network, is to move all the Blu Rays onto network drives. So in every room in the house with a TV I can access and play my whole Blu Ray collection. Soon as I work out how.

For DVDs I'm using a jail broken AppleTV2. Rip the whole DVD, no reencoding, got all the extras, all the director commentaries. AppleTV2s aren't up to playing 1080p high bit rate content off the network, but there are other media boxes that are. I will investigate further....!

I didn't know Blu-rays could be encoded in MPEG2. Interesting.

I got 2001: A Space Odyssey on Blu-ray for my birthday. That is a great movie, really a classic. Like you guys are saying about other movies, 2001 looks so much better than many modern special effects films because everything is practical, no CG. Everything is real - it's really beautiful. It's such a technically precise movie. Unfortunately I was far away from the TV, so I couldn't really see the tiny little details. I'll watch it on my TV later.

Yup, all the early ones were MPEG2, VC-1 and AVC were never used.

2001 is awesome on Blu Ray.

I love that the Region codes are logical rather than the assbackwards DVD coding.

It does suck if you're an anime lover in Europe though.

Well, cable comes in at 1080i anyway. Hook your Cable box up through component.

I hate that the region-free HD-DVD lost. Fuck region codes.

Although to be fair, there's a lot of region free Blu-Rays out anyway.

No I get that. If you hook your Cable Box up with component, you'll get the same video quality and the errors (Caused by the switch box) will go away.

AH There aren't any problems now. turns out the problem was the coax cable from the box to my wall was loose from all the wire being out of whack. That's what happens
when you have 11 different wires from various machines weighing down on it plus I was having to rearrange the power arrangement since I got a new Power strip (I had an 8 outlet I upgraded to a 12 outlet.

I own the Ferris Bueller BluRay.

Some other must haves if you don't have them:
    BBC Planet Earth
    BBC Life
Probably the LoTR extended but I haven't got it yet... I did watch them all 3 in a row in the theater this last summer though so I'm good for a while.
    Akira

The Jurassic Park Blu-ray is awesome. Unfortunately it comes with the 2 other movies which most people don't give a shit about (certainly not me), and it's kinda pricey, but it's worth it just for Jurassic Park.

Just like Back to the Future, Jurassic Park is a lot cheaper at UK Amazon than the US one for some reason. I don't think Lost World is that bad actually, but definitely not as good as the first.

The reason Blade Runner and Alien blu-rays look so good is that they spent a ton on remastering them, this is NOT the case for every movie. Movies now shot digitally should look fine on blu-ray, cataloge titles though ... this is where you have to make a choice, how much it will cost to remaster the master print vs how many people will buy it.

This is why Ghostbusters looks like crap on blu-ray, they didn't remaster it. It's only going to look as good as the current master which isn't perfect. Heck I remember when we were dubbing Ghostbusters 2 and the 1" video master we had wasn't all that great, lots of dirt in the frames and this was the master from Paramount.

Getting rid of grain and cleaning the picture up is a hands on process and it costs, simply dumping something to blu-ray isn't going to improve the picture, in the way if you have a scratchy record and dump it to CD, the scratches are still there.

I think Yakumo asked about the Blues Brothers Blu-Ray. Well, I watched it yesterday and it does have good image quality, not as good as Alien or Back to the Future or something (colors are a little washed out) but definitely decent.
Oh, and I really wish someone would release The Transformers: The Movie on Blu-Ray. (I know it was released, but it's out of print and kinda ridiculously costly now)
