From gizmodo: We always knew the Xbox 360 failure rate was high, but the only time Microsoft's put any sort of solid numbers on the thing it was always somewhere around 5%. Retailers, on the other hand, have just reported a failure rate of somewhere over 30%. 30%...........thats almost one in three X360 getting the RLOD (red lights of death, like BSOD, another microsoft trademark ) what are the odds? Apparently is all becos of insufficient cooling on the GPU, reason why some repaired X360s come back with an extra cooler in there. So my point is: if I buy a X360 should I open the bitch up and install a new cooler myself (and loosing the warranty at the same time) or wait until it dies, send it to MS, and wait weeks until I get a dirty/used refurbished unit? is like choosing between the gas chamber or the chair... At $400 is not a good deal if you ask me:fresh: Source
No one is forcing you to buy an XB360. Consider it a risk. My 2nd XB360 crashed this morning, but all seems well again this evening.
I'm on my second Xbox 360 too, I just recommend getting a product replacement plan to get a brand new one incase yours bites the dust.
Dude if I wanted to risk my money I'll rather invest in the NYSE:lol: Honestly, why should I spend 400 bucks in a console thats going to fail? With that kind of logic I'll rather buy a PS3, even when is not a better system games-wise...
I got an xbox360 last week, the fans are constantly on and are LOUD. The amount of heat its kicking out is stupidly high. Cant see it lasting long.
Look at the bright side: now you can turn off the heat:lol: Anyway, theres these external fans like the one from Nyko, but those apparently dont do any good at all to improve the system internal temperature and in some cases its even worst than the standalone fans....
I'm amazed you can hear the fans over the DVD drive. Seriously, are you sure you aren't confusing the sounds with the DVD drive. I can only hear the fans running when at the dashboard when the disc isn't spinning.
My son is on his 3rd glad i got the replacement plan they fixed the 1st release one twice then just replaced it all together the 3rd time. Only good thing was I was able to give him mine inbetween shipping it back to MS. Oh as a side note I still have mine that's from launch.....no problems...yet! fingers crossed!
I am honestly just waiting for mine to pass away. I have had it about two months after its launch date and am very scared... :crying: It got extremely hot so I bought some Nyko aftermarket cooler for it.... 2X the loudness... but I would rather have loud and working then quiet and dead!
I have a launch japanese 360 that's still holding it in but after even going though an xbox 360 at work. I'm in fear that one day my 360 will die on a firmware update. :S I'm pretty much screwed if my 360 dies.
Be careful: there are reports of Nyko fans actually melting over the console... Anyway, I wonder if it could be modded to use liquid cooling instead of those damn heatpipes and fans...
Come December and the British winter chill, you'll be able to huddle over the top of the console and thaw your fingers out, cook a side of beef, heat the house, radiant energy into space! Mine have all been the same, however I compared the launch edition to the latest motherboard update that MS sent back in the Premium yesterday and the difference in noise levels was noticeable. The launch core edition (a repaired unit) sounds like it is screaming whilst the Premium just sounds like it is trying to shout with a sore throat. Loads of heat from both.
I actually have my air con unit pointed directly at my 360, thus it remains cool to the touch even after a solid 4 hours. I used to do the same with my Saturn back in the days when I played rpg on that, you could have cooked an egg on my launch jp saturn after an hour or two!
