I hear the liquid cooling mods people do work really well and make the system very cool. If you have the skills to do such a thing then go for it.
I would but being so close to the possible release of the new 65nm chips is kinda futile to try to make these old X360s work properly... On the other hand, the chips may get delayed again, so in that case I may give it a try.
Actually its more like choosing if you want a warranty or not. I just got my beast back, if the system wasn't as fun as it is I wouldn't give a damn and would be reselling it, but I can tolerate a death. If it dies again I'll probably whine, but I can handle it. They gave me a free month of XBL and a newer console too.
I sold mine after about 3 months because: (1) it was too damn noisy, the dvd drive was sounded like a landing helicoper! and actually was louder then I usually have the sound on tv! (2) xbox live was only 3 months for free ;-) (3) I have to pay for those old ass games at the marketplace... (4) XNA was 99 euro's a year... (5) worried about the console dying on me after all those death posts.. (6) firmware updates that worry me and banning of modded consoles..(while most of my original games where being scratched by the drive!!) and not to forget it's microsoft so they were probably scanning my local network at the same time for windows licences (7) with WiFi and HD-DVD included it was more expensive then a PS3 But I have to admit.. there are some great games coming out for it and I do feel a little bad selling it.. but on the other hand i'll just wait a while and buy a second hand one next year or so for half the price they go for now ;-)
Man and I thought they couldnt make this console uglier... Honestly it doesnt looks like a lot of work, and apart from the pump, this thing should work completely silent. So that leaves the DVD to be fixed, but I can live with that... Anyway, shouldnt consumer affairs or some other NGO say something about all this? what about england? they made a lot of noise for some DCs ads back in the day, what are they saying now?
If by "England", you really mean "United Kingdom" then our champions of the cause "Watchdog" (http://www.bbc.co.uk/consumer/tv_and_radio/watchdog/) have already featured the Xbox 360 and it's apparent hardware failures on TV 3 times! Last I heard (Feb 2007) they had received roughly 250 complaints from owners who's units had died soon after the warranty ran out. Microsoft made the comment that "...most people with an Xbox 360 have an outstanding experience, and there's no systemic issue. Each incident is unique and looked at on a case-by-case basis. And (Microsoft stated) it does everything it can when people have problems..." Oh really? That's why when the Spring Update firmware fucked my out of warranty console Microsoft were only too willing to charge me £80.00 to repair it.
My launch unit has so far avoided the ring of death (though I say that and it will happen tomorow). The disc tray keeps gettign stuck though. The wors't I've had so far was when I was playing Oblvion. It crashed with some disc read error and I hadn't saved:dammit:
As most of you know, I work in a games shop. We have several customers a week (sometimes per day) come in and report a problem with their 360. They usually fall under one of the following categories: Ring of Death These machines usually have 2 red lights, or 3. Those that were out of warranty, we have opened at the customer's request. 2 rings is often fixable, but 3 isn't really. Overheating Heat build-up seems to be causing lots of problems. You'll probably notice your 360 gives off a lot of heat, especially after prolonged periods. This can be the cause for the ring of death, or it can cause a game to freeze (the machine locks up, or sometimes you lose the picture or get graphical glitching). The newer batch (basically 2007 models) are allegedly less prone, although we have had a few in-warranty machines die. Scratched discs This is quite common. We say the best way to avoid this is to ALWAYS ALWAYS use your pad to do everything. Turn the console on and off with the pad. Go to the dashboard and wait before ejecting the CD. Insert the CD with the pad. People also report other issues, such as loudness of the fans. Well, if it wasn't for fans, it would DEFINATELY overheat!! Of course, the newer models are quieter, so buy new if that is a concern. Oh yeah, and I have seen machines crash during updates, but fortunately it didn't kill them! Interestingly, when you DO have the console repaired by Microsoft, they should offer you an extended warranty, which is quite cheap (£30 I think). This beats £80 for a replacement machine! If they don't offer, ask. Alternatively, if you MUST buy second hand, the larger retail shops (in the UK, at least) often offer a 9 - 12 month warranty. You will probably pay a bit more for the machine than you would in your local indie store, but maybe it is worth it! Here are a couple of reports on 360 errors: BBC Watchdog Feb 07 - Ring of Death Kassa (Dutch TV show) report on scratched discs
If/when my 360 fails it'll be a learning experience, course by then there might also be mod chips and I can kill 2 birds with one stone.
I don't own a 360 myself but my sister bought one last year (premium) and has not had an ounce of trouble with heat or anythig even though it was sitting on top of a big ps2 with very litlle space to the side and back i would take out a plan if i were buying one just to make sure.
The DVD isn't as loud if you get a benQ. Hopefully when its 65nm the thing wil be perfected like the later PS2's. I notice my new unit's Hitachi drive isn't as loud as the samsung.
Uhhh, not that I dont doubt you or anything, but do you have links to these so called "reports?" I am just scared for my expensive console is all! Now the question is if I should remove it or risk even more. GAH! Screw you XBOX 360! Either way you will overheat and explode! :crying:
my piece of shit is dying after playing forza 2. It doesn't give a red ring, but locks up countless times while i'm playing it. I can actually notice it getting worse, giving me dirty disk errors occasionally, so I expect the red lights any day now. It's almost comical though when you get an error message saying, "In order to play this disc, please insert in an XBox 360 console." who writes these stupid error messages?
Here you go: Nyko's Intercooler for the Xbox 360 causes more trouble than it's worth, according to Microsoft representative contacted by Elektriq. The problem is its construction: the Intercooler steals some of the power originating from the supply, decreasing the joules the console actually receives to inadequate levels. One representative even reported that the Intercooler has caused "scorch marks" on the console. From Joystiq From this user (the one of the picture above): Just check out what it did. Not to mention it melted one of my Xbox360 power connector covers which is still inside the Intercooler. Burnt, may I add. Whoa, for reals? cuz that sounds absurd...
Hey man. Thanks a ton for looking up all that information for me. Didnt want to bother you too much! Hmmm, well.... It does seem to mess up quite alot (according to the comments and pics on Joystiq) Thanks, I will probably be removing it soon and finding a new Spot for my 360 to try and keep cool!
