That guy's a dick. I remember some random commercial on G4 years ago where he made an ass of himself saying "If you can't play when the pressures on then you really can't play." A week ago I got drunk and watched the King of Kong now everytime I think of him i'm going to dry heave. I really hope that nobody takes that documentary or, BM and his very mail-order bride looking wife, seriously. It kind of makes me want to set up a more legitimate record keeper for gamers since Twin Galaxy hangs on Billys every single fake tape.
Yeah, the guy has a big ego and he knows it. It rubs a lot of people the wrong way. His personality is such that it would be easy to make him look like an ass by editing a bunch of footage together in a documentary. He's got a point about playing under pressure, though. Playing at a tournament, or attempting a world record live somewhere is completely different than playing alone in your bedroom. Everyone knows that. I don't care about his personality - I think it's kind of funny. I try to only judge him by his gaming skills because that's the only way I had known of him a long time before King of Kong was released. Yeah I knew he had a mullet and owned a hot sauce company. I don't care. Good for him. If you see a recording of one of his perfect Pac-Man games, all the way up to and through the glitched final screen, your mind will be blown permanently.
I don't agree with that. Steve Wiebe is able to reproduce his consistent game play in person on demand. Billy Mitchell never sets records with an audience. As for the tape that he had submitted in King of Kong after Weibe beat him, I believe that he had one hell of an lucky game that he just happened to have got on tape and kept as an ace up his sleve. I don't think he could have reproduced that again on demand. Also, Billy Mitchell has been known as an asshole way before KoK came out. No amount of editing is going to change the fact that he completely avoided Wiebe. Poor sportsmanship.
not really impressed by the douche bag. I'm more impressed people who play against actual people in games rather than memorizing patterns.
The movie itself played with alot of the facts though. If you actually go to the Twin Galaxies forums Walter Day has a whole section devoted to talking about the film. http://forums.twingalaxies.com/viewforum.php?f=86&sid=ece78c646d756278acd7b058eb283af8 It's pretty common even in documentaries for directors and editors to distort reality to create a more compelling drama. Even in the KoK commentary they mention not having much of a film originally until the came up with the idea of using Wiebe and Mitchell as the protagonist/antagonist.
Speaking about the game, isn't there a maximum score you can get, i.e. the killscreen? If both of these guys can get that kill screen, then how exactly are they competing?
If I recall correctly, Wiebe uses a hammer strategy and takes out barrels/other enemies, whereas Mitchell goes for speed and thus time bonuses mostly.
I think these pussies need to put their panties on and play something other than Donkey Kong or Pac Man. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Pac-Man 100% patterns (in theory)? He doesn't have my respect as "the best video game player of all time" until he beats Doom, or wins a fighting game tournament.
Pac-Man can be played 100% patterns, however there are a number of tricks that can be learnt. This guy explains all the tricks and bugs in the game, and this is what Billy mitchell uses, by knowing what the ghosts will do before you get to a corner means you can effectively control the ghosts
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but for Donkey Kong and the like can't you just farm enamies for points? Such as, jumping over an infinite amount of barrels over and over again just before a kill screen stage? Or do score keepers invalidate runs that are not within the "spirit" of the game? And what about games that are really broken? Such that, it can be so widely abused that everyone (With sufficient time) could make the score counter max out, or roll over again and again?
who who and who the hell is billy mitchell some kind of game champ hay.well how is this possible it could only be after he has won big scores on some games selected at random from whatever era they may be. bet he can't beat me at wc90
From reading many interviews, such as the creating/editing of The King of Kong documentary, I know that others are correct in saying that it is the media who spins his image, and that director Seth Gordon has also admitted to skewing facts and altering time-lines. Interviews by others around him state that he is a genuinely nice person who is just blunt and matter-of-fact with the media. He has stated that he just enjoys playing games and the feeling of winning. Also, that he hates to lose, but that he does not ever hold against others, but rather himself. The interviews that I am referencing are from old Retro Gamer mags and a few online items a read a few years ago. I remember one interview in which he stated that he was amused by how much the media spins his character, but that he doesn't really mind and finds it more amusing than anything. I could continue on, but the basic gist is that people should read more indepth sources if they want an honest impression of him, rather than being lazy and soaking up everything that the media spins. The King of Kong is a terrible movie for reference. So bring your popcorn, but not your notebook.
I guess i'll never know until I actually meet him. But I do have a general distrust toward everything human. I'll take everything here with a grain of salt. BlueHaze: What are you going for here? I shouldn't watch the movie but I should eat popcorn?
if you read the sentence BEFORE that, he says King of Kong is a terrible movie reference. so watch it to enjoy it, but remember that it's not accurate.
