you cannot go wrong with buying hd dvd drive right now.
you can get one for less than $100(combined with still going 5 free titles offer gets you great stuff for peanuts), movies can be bought for as low as $10-$15 if you know where to look.
truly fantastic titles are still hd dvd exclusive(Bourne Trilogy, King Kong, Heroes SI, Matrix Trilogy, Star Trek Original Series SI, Mummy's, just to name a few).
    fabulous quality.
even if there won't be many new releases in future on the format(supposely movies will be still coming on hd-dvd for couple of months), there are already hundreds of movies to choose from.

I know! There like 50$ on Amazon. It seems to me like it has better movies then Bluray. I'm pretty sure I saw stuff like Underworld on Bluray, but Big Lebowski on HDDVD. lololo

Guys, just been watching the Japanese news and they were saying that Toshiba's stock is going up and up and up! Why? The whole section was about HDDVD vs Blu-Ray. They mentioned that big investors are interested in Toshiba. Do they have something up their sleeve? Probably not but who knows.

Yeah me too, but the fact is that once DoD gets easy enough for non-tech people to use, physical media will be over.

Could be, that would be fun, I just love when things blows in the face of Sony, bunch of liars... I'm sure the inside source at Toshiba who spoke to the press saying that Toshiba was quitting HD DVD works for Sony, it's all speculation until it's announced in the interim I am sure a lot of money is made on Toshiba's shares...

Clearly not enough people truly care about Hi Def. The ability to compress films to stick them on mobile devices and onto HDD is clearly of more importance than the industry led desire to provide the ultimate viewing & auditory experience.

HD DVD may have failed, but as most are pointing out Blu-ray hasn't really made the massive impact it was expected to. Who said it "Joe Public isn't ready to cash in it's DVD collection". Not for the forseable future as prices are too high. However now that the public knows who has won the race, they'll possibly be happier to invest......probably in a PS3 (see "OMG Sony are jammy!" type thread)

Maybe the plummet of prices for HD-DVD stuff has made HD-DVD sales spike. Or maybe Toshiba, pissed off at how they got cheated, are going to turn around and make yet ANOTHER format.

If they do, please oh please make it holographic storage.

for commercial, affordable-price holografic storage you'll have to wait at least 6 years. (and it won't still be cheap)

Have to agree with Yakumo, we're not to the point yet where digital distribution has hit the kind of numbers that sales of dvds has. It's happened already with music, but not with video just yet.

Give it a few years though, it's only a matter of time before someone comes up with a popular itunes-type thing exclusively for movies. Blockbuster and Netflix are already selling downloads.

right, it seems kind of stupid to give up when there's million of untapped customers who have yet to upgrade to HD anything. Them ducking out will make prices fall, and people could get in on the HD scene for cheap. Of course, all it'll really do is scare people off and make them not want to get perfectly fine HD movies for cheap as hell. People will eventually come around, but only after other technology needed for HD movies drops down in price too. You need a decent HDTV and surround sound system to enjoy these movies as intended.

Probably stock was low until the rumours that they are dropping the axe on HD-DVD. Now more profit will be made once more.

so? that's barely 3 years. HDDVD was in the work for longer and was tremedously expensive even when re-using old plants... what do you expect from holo discs? to come out cheap and soon? :D

i remember some interview stating that we'll sit with BR/HDDVD for at least 4-5 years before next standard.

    i might be wrong tought.

Looks like HDDVD is officially dead now. =( I guess the upside is cheap players and movies.

4-5 years is what I'm talking about though. Its pointless to start buying into some format when in no time another one is going to pop up.

:D something like 3-4 years after holo disc a new better format will be out! :p

i mean that thinking like that all the world's factory would be ruined ;) what comes next will always be better and badder.

Oh well it's official HD DVD is dead, we are now all at the mercy of Shit-Ray, unfinished, cluncky and made by Sony, I thought this day would never come but oh well at least it's clear now. Sell HD DVD stuff and move on with your life, I'm not investing money in HD movies anymore, upscaled DVD on my 360 will do...
