The money seems less of an issue than the distribution method. We're talking under two bills. People here spend more on red bull in a month.
At that point, Id figure the people here could release it then. Ive never even played Trespasser, and I doubt its available on any Digital services to actually support anyone anyway.
Given there's an entire community with a long history with this game, I would give them the opportunity to raise the funds and release it their way, vs our way. Here's Pine Valley, after 11 years of waiting. <--- click here Disc contents
The trescom guys picked it up and will be doing a proper release along with some mod and gameplay enhancing tools.
Are the trescom guys going to release it via normal wide distribution or limited to those who bought the original game?
I am going to assume since you ended up going with them they are planning to do a non-closed community release. It seems kind of a waste to lock it down only to people who own a game that hasn't been sold properly for 5+ years. Either way it's nice to have a look at Pine Valley.
Eh, multiple copies on eBay from $20-$40 right now. Just because it's a few years old doesn't mean it was limited production. -hl718
The issue with Ebay copies though is that we can fairly agree that any copy sold there is unlikely to profit the team that produced the game initially. I don't have an issue with that though it kind of seems like a silly/arbitrary way to prevent access.
Exactly! The game was released 11 years ago and was a commercial flop it's not like we can give the developers money if we buy it now.
Hello! I'm the head of the TresCom Web Department. A CD Check would be useless anyway since you can get around it by using a not so legal copy of the game anyway. The latest version of the ATX engine patch recently removed this restriction as well. The original idea behind it was to prevent people who didn't own the game from getting retail Trespasser assets. I'll be sure to let you guys know when MP gets the betas up. Thanks for letting us know that you acquired them, we're sure to spend a long time going over the files with a fine toothed comb and compare them to the retail. I'm personally going to play PV as soon as possible since that level was the thing that initially led me to the Diehard Forums in 2001 that eventually became TresCom. For anyone interested, I put together a quick table comparing the sizes of the various level files between the retail and beta: http://diehard.50webs.com/filesizecomparison.html
Maybe we could settle the licensing with a $5 donation to a charity or similar to make up for the lack of being able to tuck that money into the actual programmer's pocket.
Big Red is planning on creating a patch to make the beta more stable. He says that ATX will not work on the beta exe since the exe would likely be very different from the release version (which was created on 10/6/1998). Just to let you know before you try to install it on the beta exe. MP is currently ironing out the details on how to distribute. He hopes to have things ready by Monday.
I will add that the discussion is ongoing so details might change. MP is the one who will make the final decisions about this. I can't guarantee anything at this point other than we will distribute. When and how may change at any time. Patience is a virtue to everyone waiting I suggest you guys find a way to get the retail game (There are various ways) and play through it so you can get an accurate comparison later. Should keep you preoccupied for a while at least. It will also give you guys some practice with the complicated control scheme.
I got the retail version, translated to portuguese (yeah the dialogs too). Nice to read about the beta release.
