    That's 200% clone seller.
Move your mouse cursor to top right of the browser window and click the cross button.

    You're right.

It's still Exhibit A of why Deunan should've listened to its consumer base and scaled up development in mass facilities to increase the availability of the GDEMU, and maybe even drive its price down. There'd be no real market for clones is GDEMU was reasonably obtainable, better still if it was affordable.

At this point, this was unavoidable. He doesn't deserve it, not at all, but he kind of bring it up upon himself.

I don't agree with this. Everything in this hobby is cloned, it doesn't matter if the original has a constant supply or not. For example, there's tons of clones for Krikzz's stuff, and availability has never been an issue. People want to save money and buy them. Same would have happened with the GDEMU, even if it was constantly available. Clones would have been made and priced cheaper, and people would still buy them.

The difference being that Krikzz has scaled up his production and isn't perpetually out of stock. Buying one of his device isn't a matter of timing and pure luck. I don't think his business is too much threatened by clones, and the majority of people here wouldn't buy them.

On the other hand, Deunan's approach frustrates some potential buyers and as such I think he'll be hurt more by the cheapo clones. Most people here wouldn't buy a clone if they could avoid it, but I see a ton of people being excited about the clones out of sheer convenience to order.

To avoid piracy, you should make your product more convenient than the pirated version. This is where Steam/Netflix have really understand something others didn't.

Disclaimer: I personally did buy a GDEMU from Deunan on my first try with zero issue, but I still realise that a lot of people can't get one even if they're eager to send money Deunan's way. I wish only good fortune upon him.

That isn't a thing. There is no avoiding piracy. Stuff can be delayed, or made difficult with DRM, or other means, but there is no avoiding it. In fact, I bet if GDEMUs were constantly available from the start, we would have seen clones 2-3 years ago. The fact it's taken so long may simply be due to them being only available for short sale windows, and the cloners have been trying to get their hands on them just like everyone else.

The SD2SNES was cloned and plenty of people have been buying the copies, despite the fact the original has always been available. Why? The clones are cheaper. It's the same reason why tons of people will spend $20 on a cheap SCART to HDMI converter vs buying an OSSC. There's a common line of thinking that goes with trying to obtain results with the littlest amount invested.

Maybe I should've said "To minimise the impact of piracy on your buisiness", Steam/Netflix really did hit the nail there; nothing is easier than to pirate TV Shows, except watching them on Netflix.

I stand by what I said. It would really help Deunan to ramp up his production and improved the ordering process, especially now that he's in competition with cloners.

Like I just posted, if he had ramped up production from the start, the cloners would of had easier access, and the cheap clones would have been out there even sooner. The buyers who don't care about firmware bricks, or possible shoddy electronics would have been buying them then and they'll be buying them now, simply because the clones are cheaper. Doesn't matter if this happened in 2015 or now. Deunan did nothing to himself, this was a thing that was going to happen.

I'm not saying that it was avoidable, I'm saying he's more vulnerable because of how complex it is to order from him.

He'd be declared vulnerable in perpetuity, regardless of timing of actions or lack thereof. If it wasn't his ordering system, people would be saying his prices aren't low enough to compete with the clones. If not his prices, his lack of presence on social media. Or shipping method. or shipping origin. On and on.

RetroUSB AVS, Analogue NT Mini, Super NT, USB-GDROM, PowerPak, Flashboy, any Atari Max cartridge, C4CPC, 64drive, UltraHDMI, Hi-Def NES, and the list goes on and on of devices that haven't been cloned. Why is that? Demand and opportunity. If something is easy to clone then it gets cloned and the extent it gets sold demands on the demand and how well the demand is being filled. If it's not easy to clone then the demand has to make up for the difficulty in cloning it. With the GDEMU the demand was really high but very little of it was being filled. This made it worth it for the cloner to put in the time and effort to make the clone since the demand was there waiting to be filled. It's definitely not as simple that everything get's cloned. If that was the case all of the above would have been cloned already and many people would have gave up on these types of projects.

Exactly. If this was an eventuality, and Deunan did nothing to improve his production and streamline his business model, how can he be surprised by an underhanded (but better equipped) competitor stealing his business from under him?

He has every right to be upset that his work is being stolen, but he wasn't willing to take action to protect himself over this "eventuality" and now wants to be angry at everyone else for not protecting his IP *for* him.

Basically, your point is: "If I don't have my toy, I am entitled to piss and shit on intellectual property and law."

    Let me remind you this:

Not that I believe you have what's needed to understand, but at least, Michael London tried.

I don't feel like it was aimed at me, but for the record: I'm not saying that at all.

I just think Deunan should've listened when people told him numerous times and repeatedly over weeks and months and years that he should improve his production in order to meet the demand. He could make more profits with less efforts and have a happy pool of potential customers. This wouldn't prevent the clones, but it could allow him to lower the cost without paying out of pocket to make it less profitable for them, it would proof his business against them.

He though he had a very niche product and tuned his production to that expectation. However, it turns out the demand is many times over greater than what he expected and his approach hurts him in the end. If he had investors or business people involved, they'd probably have the same discourse I have.

Bad analogy: Nobody would buy hand-sewn t-shirts for 150$ if there were 15$ Chinese clones.

The blame lies squarely where the demand is: cheap Dreamcast gamers with no patience. There'd be no market if there were no paying customers. The excuses I see blaming the GDEMU creator are just that, excuses. "It's so difficult to get .. it's expensive.. it's his fault... if he only listened." Be an adult, and stop passing the buck. If you're willing to stick clone garbage in your gaming hardware, if you're confused about who to blame, just go find a mirror.

This is the same kind of logic that blames youtube content creators for raising the prices of games, when it's the people watching who are doing the purchasing.
