I bought a Kingston DataTraveler 2GB flash drive online after seeing it in the list of compatible USB devices here but I can't for the life of me get it to work at all with my Xbox. Usually if a drive is partially compatible, it will allow the Xbox to format it, then it can be read from ok and then become corrupted after very little copying. With this one, the Xbox says that there's a problem with the drive and it's malfunctioning. So, not the message it gives when it formats a new drive but instead the one it gives if a drive can't be read. I tried formatting it using USB FATX Formatter 1.3.2, formatting it to FAT32 and intentionally corrupting it like the instructions say to but it's a no go. Xbmc won't even recognize it while formatted to FAT/32. Windows 10 has no issues reading/writing/formatting. Is there something I'm missing or is this drive just incompatible? Can anyone suggest a flash drive that will actually work? Hopefully >= 1GB
This drive installs it's own software when plugged into PC. At least, mine does, which might be why it's causing issues.
With Xbox, the rule of thumb is smaller = higher chance of compatibility. Usually that means <=512MB (Why do you want a big drive anyways? Only for XBMC? Just use the network, man!). Anyways, try removing (zeroing) the partition table to give the console a completely empty device to work with. If it doesn't offer to format it then, the drive is not going to work, period.
Yea I knew smaller drives tend to work, and the only reason I bought this 2GB is because it was on a freakin list saying it would work! lol. I zeroized it and plugged it in and still nothing. Oh well, on to another one. I wanted a bigger drive just so if I do a softmod I could install Xbmc and some emulators on the spot. I know it would be slow but still having the option of not needing a network and computer would be cool. Can't rely on burned discs because it depends on the drive and disc used.
Have you tried "USB FATXFormater" be careful when using it as it also shows internal drives in its drive select drop down menu.
Yes. I haven't tried it after zeroing though. Not sure if that would make a difference.n I plan on just getting a different one. Maybe a 1gb this time. Got greedy. Lol
Fwiw, the biggest drive I ever got to work on an Xbox was 512MB. Never tried any 1Giggers though... Also, be smart about what to install, so the USB drive's size is less of an issue. For example, my current XBMC is cut down to 16MB (left out all the unused crap, most skins and languages). I have a folder with ROMs here which will go on my PS TV once I find some time, it has some "Top 100 of..." collections for a couple of consoles - this clocks in at another ~250MB, just to have some random figure. Add a couple dozen MB on top of that for emulators and stuff, and maybe your XBMC won't be as small as mine, and everything still fits within 512MB, easily.
Quick format will fix that, OP will need to re-do the partition table as this drive has the bloatware as a separate partition with some CD emulation.. I've used a Sandisk Cruzer 1GB, worked fine for many installs What I think the issue is, is the controller used on the USB drive.. Maybe something to do wiht USB 1.0 backwards compatibility
I have an old (10yrs old to be exact) 1gb Kingston Data traveler I used when I first started modding to transfer saves, I also have a controller with a usb port soldered in. You need something thats USB 1.0. I tried several of the other ones on that list and never had any luck. If you want to install XBMC, get Auto Installer Deluxe or HeXen. I have and use both with no issues. As always you will need to update XBMC unless you're smart enough to update it in the ISO (I'm not that smart).
USB to microSD adapters with up to 4gb works fine in every case I try. No hubs tho! More on this! They can be modded into a memory card or controller easily if you fancy that sort of thing. Hm, "MicroSD Xbox Memory Card Mod" tutorial for noobs? Meh too lazy they can find it here if they search that.
So the 1gb Data Traveler's work for softmodding the system? I checked the compatibility list and only seen a 32mb and 2gb version listed. If so that is great to learn, as I am waiting for my usb to xbox adapter to arrive in the mail from China. Was worried I would have trouble finding a really old usb 1.0 flash drive that would work. Luckily I never threw this old thing away. I had it on a spare key chain.
Do a lot of Research about fatx filesystem. Because your hdd is a fatx filesystem. It is very similar to unix os(operating system). In conclusion, if you know how to make application on Xbox orginal, programming thru c/c++ will support your flash drive(https://assemblergames.com/threads/any-good-documentation-on-c-for-begginers.18137/), (https://assemblergames.com/threads/development-kit-guide-book-for-xbox.38761/), (https://assemblergames.com/threads/xbox-developing-general-questions.41563/), (https://assemblergames.com/threads/xbox-alpha-xdk-reverse-engineering-and-virtualization.48094/). Research very smart people like nikola tesla. And the guy who invented pac man games. I forgot his name.
