If this is old, my apologies. Please lock this if so. I know its been rumored, but some confirmation came to light today. http://www.gamesradar.com/gb/ps3/game/news/article.jsp?articleId=20060524153157765035§ionId=1006 Sony continues to bring about their own destruction.
So, You want me to spend a months rent on the system, and then I can't buy used games...No chance in hell...
While I can see their point in doing this (Used games and rentals have been a thorn in the side of the big companies...Nintendo used to publish language discouraging the use of used/rented games in their manuals before), it's yet another negative point for Sony in the eyes of most gamers. Way to go Sony! lol!
I do not think that this will hold up in court if someone decides to challenge it. The problem is that yes, you can determine licensing agreements which are enforced upon the user. However, once the consumer purchases a product, it is within their rights to transfer the entire product (media and license) to another user. Installable software is different in that you typically do not need the media to use (i.e. you need to uninstall it to sell it), but a video game is not usable without the media.
So forget bootlegs, reselling originals would be on an underground market too. Can't wait to see how eBay and Sony team up to keep all those game auctions removed. I can see how sony would be disappointed (jealous?) about not making a dime on used game sales. But still... Wasn't there a related rumor about the PS3 games only being able to launch on the system they are originally started in? Although everyone can point out problems with that, I just thought this was along the same lines. [saracasm] If it's a licensing system as the article suggests, is Sony going to ask for the game back after a certain amount of time? Dear Sony Customer, Thank you for purchasing one of our great games. We hope you have been enjoying it. However, our records show that you have now possessed it for 12 months. If you would like to continue playing please make a payment via phone, our website or mail to the address listed above. Otherwise, please send the game, complete with original instructions and case, back to sony headquarters in this convenient oversized envelope. Thanks for playing! [/saracasm]
Now that I think about it, Phantasy Star Online on the DC kind of followed this model. Once you started a game on your DC, that particular system was the only one you could play the online mode with. I think you could still play the single player game on any system, but I don't recall since I lost interest in that game quickly...
And iirc Nintendo sued Blockbuster about the rental of games. And obviously lost. Then saw Blockbuster was making copies of game manuals to hand out in an effort to keep from losing them, sued about that and won.
I *usually* dont sell games but I hope this doesnt come into effect. I knew he was being sarcastic, but I was thinking the exact same thing when gaming247 said what he did about Sony "taking back" games after a certain amount of time. I hope the regular game doesnt go the way of the MMO and we get monthly fees just to play SP of MGS4 or something. Im gonna wait a WHILE before I get a PS3.
Heheheheh. I was told this by a developer a month ago before E3. Didn't take it to heart back then but if you guys read the specifications of the Blu Ray technology it has it where it can only be played on the first player it boots up in. I didn't think that the PS3 would have it because it would cause controversy but damn. Sony is nailing itself within their coffin. Besides, tahts what this new technology is all about. IP control. Basically, the big wigs at Sony, Hollywood, etc. want to change the media format to where you buy a movie in HD DVD or Blue Ray you are buying permission to view it, not keep it in a way that allows you to make back ups incase the original gets destroyed, etc. No, they want it to where you buy permission and if something happens to it, you have to buy it again, no ifs or buts about it. Seriously, I feel a massive boycott coming in the next year or so as the industry starts forcing retailers to stop stocking DVDs and BluRay and HDDVDs instead. DVDs became widespread thru the consumer, not the industry. It was the consumer that chose DVD because of its quality, ease of use, and the transitions from the theatre to DVD format was much faster than on VHS. This time though, they want to force-feed us this media. Their excuse, to stop piracy. Their real agenda is to keep them making more than before and putting out shit movies/games/music as usual...
This is pretty old, no? This news surfaced like a year ago. I think Game Radar's statements are just based off of old news. C'mon guys. Sony isn't that stupid.
So were screwed when the ps3 eventually breaks down, and a collection of 60 games becomes useless, or will sony charge us a fee per game to make them playable on another console? Honestly, why are they screwing with a good thing. I'm pretty sure the ps2 sold well enough, and the dvd disc is holding its own, then why do we need all these new fancy-smhmancy security and licensing fee's Perhaps another industry crash aint that far away Ryan
Well, with the way Squeenix is bending over the fans of their best series (SO3 was horrible on so many levels and FFXI & FFXII aren't pleasing the real FF crowd) maybe that won't matter so much.
Hey I'm not trying to be a prick here, but I think I am in some sort of twisted heaven right now with all of these seeming mistakes that Sony may make. I don't really care to see them go under or anything, I just think that they need to be humbled.
Sony just wants to piss of stores like block buster, gamestop/EB, anyplace that sells used games. Most of the games are sold in retailers like Best Buy and Walmart where they don't sell used games.
I just can't believe this is true. I said it with the "ban" on Japanese used electronics...there's just no way a company can eliminate an entire secondary market by passing a few rules or laws. Enforcement is impossible. Microsoft has been moving towards this for some time. You can't resell your Office/Windows products anymore since Microsoft takes a snap shot of your PC and stores it on file...then will compare it when you try to register the key again. If the PC isn't the same, it won't validate. So the technology is obviously there. Either way, if they want to do that, it's their choice, but charging me full price for a license rather than a fully owned copy is bullshit. Lower the price if you're going to lower the value to me or if you're going to lower what it is you're really selling. Everything we buy has a residual value and if you knock my residual value down to zero then I want some compensation on the front end.
