You got it in one. Megamix is a piss poor put together game. So what if it has loads of characters, some of which I admit are very interesting. The actual game looks pretty poor for the most part and the slow down really is the nail in the coffin. I'm not saying that Megamix is total crap but it's not what we all thought or were told it was.

The reason for Megamix's existence is rather odd, since it came after the cancellation of Sonic The Fighters and before Saturn owners would have Virtua Fighter 3. Therefore, knowing the former would never see the light of day on Saturn it was decided early on by AM2 that elements from STF would appear in FMM, but due to Sonic Team not wanting their characters used only Bean and Bark could be featured in the end. However, this contradicts other facts as STF was still down for a release in the first week of May 1998 - by this point FMM was already out in PAL territories, never mind back in its native Japan! Also, if Megamix really was just another stop-gap to prepare gamers for Saturn VF3 (along with Digital Dance Mix, which is more of a tech demo than anything really playable) then how come AM2 completed their first revision of said Model 3 conversion - allegedly - just weeks after wrapping up development of its teaser? Of course, the definitive second revision wasn't officially cancelled until September 17th, though even this gap would not have been enough in my opinion to justify the extra work AM2's staff had to endure in order for Megamix to be created... especially when you consider they were simultaneously working on the 32-bit prototype of what later became Shenmue as well!

Oh they were working on VF3 all right - to the point when it was rejected the first time they were so determined to change management's opinion of their final product they went "all out" and made a version somehow even better than their first attempt on the Saturn. Considering how many projects they had going at once during this small period of time, I can't blame you for describing AM2's staff as being slave-like. However, what you can't deny is just how prolific they were - just look at the Shenmue prototype or try and imagine what VF3 would have looked like (providing the rumours are true and it was THAT good) then say they weren't pushing the proverbial boat out compared to other Saturn developers. Was this system underpowered? Not in the right hands it wasn't, and that's coming from a team whose leader once said only one in any hundred programmers could fully utilise its power!

Fighters megamix has some chronic slow down, I was surprised on how slow some stages were.

VF3 on the Saturn should have happened, but saying that it does look very polygony, even the Playstation 3D fighting games released in 1997 looked a lot better.

According to a post at the blog linked to below the pictures above, this was only the first version. The second had a 50% increase in polygons.

Here is the quote (even with a link back here :D):

Those are screenshots from MAME's incomplete emulation. I can make some of my own:

Edit: I think this is the third time I've had to correct someone posting those screenshots...

Edit 2: Two of the comments on your link even says that they're from MAME.
