Now don’t base any purchasing decisions on this screen cap—Windows Vista is still in beta, after all—but as much as we welcome the new feature in Vista that points out which programs are slowing down one’s computer, we kinda sorta wish the programs in question weren’t the ones that make it run. Here’s to the next few months of polishing, Microsoft!

Funny that "teh slow" apps are nothing else that explorer and desktop.

PS: remember the minimun specs for the XP? a 233MMX I think, but the damn thing was slow even on a coppermine and early P4s...

You're pointing at a beta operating system and saying it's slow? Look, i'm all for bashing microsoft, but this is rediculous...

Even Mac OSX was sluggish until the 10.0.3 update came out.

    Exactly.....

It's beta. Also, MS is working on it so that the actual requirements won't be as demanding as the beta version is right now. I still find it funny that the program would consider explorer as one of the reasons its slowing down the PC lol.

I have no interest on Vista. I'll probably have to install this damn thing to play games, but 90% of the computer usage will be on ubuntu linux, at least for me.

Windows is good for people that don't know how to use computers, or know just the basic. (although linux is better because of the root safety, not letting people doing stupid thing on the computer). For people that want a secure, fast, clean OS, linux is the way to go. For those who want patches of critical problems everyday, go for Windows.

PS: Yes, i'm becoming a Linux fan. sorry

I never said Vista is going to suck, but you assumed that just because I said is slow (dont even bother to read the caption)

Yeah linux rocks when you learn how to use it, the problem is that people just dont want to do the jump.

BTW, how's debian? is the new version (the one that's suppose to be stable) ready?

I always liked to use Linux, even before i started college. But i never liked KDE's interface, because it made me remember of Windows.

I started using Conectiva Linux, then Red Hat in college Red Hat. At work and at home i started using Knoppix or Kurumin. But Ubuntu is the best in my opinion. Can't wait for the new version.

I understand the practicality of using Linux if you are not a PC gamer and will only use the PC for network administration, word processing, and web surfing in which Linux can do very well now. But I'm not that advance to use Linux.

Recently I've heard from friends and friends of friends that Ubuntu is a reliable OS to run, and that it could do close to 99% of what "native" Windows programs can do. How is it compared to Red Hat, SUSE, and other Linux-based OSs?

If you think you don't need to patch a Linux machine, then your box has probably already been owned.

I prefer it to any other distro I've used. As it is loosely debian based, it has a handy feature called apt-get, which basically can update specific programs already on your computer with a remote server, check for upgrades for all programs, or (best bit) install new software + all dependencies onto the computer. Ubuntu has both a GUI for this or you can be old school and just in the terminal type (for example) "apt-get install firefox".
One other important feature of Ubuntu is that it's security model is similar to OS X's - by default there is no root account, but your account is a superuser - basically means you need your password for installs, updates etc. It all works quite well.
I've given various versions of linux a go in the past (knoppix hard disk install, red hat, mandrake, suse) but never stuck with any of them - ubuntu has been on my desktop for about 3 months now, and I use it about 80% of the time (dual boot with windows). Basically, Give it a go, it has a very friendly forum, and the help is actually useful! Never have I seen a help system which works and answers my questions before!

  17. Thread title edited. I'm sure you meant to have a coherent sentence and "teh slow" was just a typo. No need to thank me.

As far as complaining that a beta OS is slow... yeah, it's sortof a moot point. You don't say what hardware you're running. Of course Vista will be slow if you're trying to use it on something like a P3 866. And is that the Aero Glass interface? That's also going to eat massive amounts of CPU time.
That's a pretty ridiculous and fanboyish statement, there. Windows is no more for 'people that don't know how to use computers' than Linux is for 'people who are computer experts'.

You really need to learn how to articulate opinions in an intelligent or, barring that, at least semi-adult manner. You know, where you support your wild statements with some sort of evidence or personal experience or something like that so it doesn't sound like you're just trolling.

What i tried to say is that most people are used to work on Windows, so they use Windows on their home computers, since they know how stuff works. Plus games are meant to run under Windows.

Linux is very user-friendly these days, with distributions like ubuntu. There's no complication in using it, just some differences you'll learn by using it. There's Live CD's for people that want to check it before installing. But most people are affraid to just test the Live CD's.

I know people that use computers for anything but not games. For them i suggest using Linux, because it's safer. Not 100% safe, because nothing is that safe. But they at least are protected of tons of virus, spywares and the usual critic MS problems.

I really wasn't trying to make a fanboyish or ridiculous comment, because i use Windows XP everyday. I use Linux for more than 4 years now, but only when i got the chance to test ubuntu, is that i got really excited about it.

Sorry if my comments sounded fanboyism.

I'm not saying that. All i said is that is safer. Of course you'll need to update stuff, but you can't deny is safer than Windows.
