oh, please, shut the fuck up. You're really getting on my nerves, and i already told you about it over msn. Try linux before bashing it like an innocent, and i know you didn't.

i know you're joking, but still, enough is enough.

i never said linux was perfect either.

    edit:
its always nice to see someone about trying it. :)
Caution tough, linux is a pain in the arse like i said earlier, you actually need to work and read in order to master it. Just dont give up or desesperate before you see the light, and dont think you will never use windows again. Good luck!

I'm really interested in trying Ubuntu out after I reformat my PC. What file system does it use, and what do I need to know before making a partition, coming from one of you all that have used/installed it?

I tried some Red hat flavor a few months back and I couldnt even browse the web properly. If HL2 can run as well on some of these other flavors you guys are mentioning I think I'll give them a shot this weekend.

Mark: I think its ext3. but if you leave some space unformatted the installer can format it for you - just don't let it repartition, its always best to do that yourself

you can really use any filesystem that's compiled into the kernel. I usually use riserfs, but it doesn't really matter...

I'm hearin some pretty bad shit from colleagues about that ubuntu distro.

Aparently among the experts the only way is debian...

I seriously doubt firefox is going to do that, after all, is available in windows too.

The halo effect has to come from vista: the thing is going to require some fancy specs not everybody will be able to pay, and all those versions (flavors as some say) are going to drill a hole in their security algorithms.

Cheap PCs with free OS and an increase in windows price is what's going to kill MS.

care to elaborate on what you heard from "colleagues"

    ?

You can run Vista, but you can't use Aero Glass without a DirectX9.0c compliant video card. (apprently this is reported all over) Same thing with XP, alot of people didnt have 512 ram in there computer, hence XP ran like a dog.

How is this going to kill windows when more the half of the world runs on Windows based machine, Ever stop to think that larage chunk of business run just Windows based products?
To even switch to something else because it, may or may not be better is just a waste of money, and not even worth it. Just because a small percentage of home users pick an alternative over windows, doesnt mean the sky is falling.

Just a quick idea for anyone wanting to have access to Linux and to Windows for gaming. Instead of a Dual Boot, do what I did and install VMware in Windows.

That way your games still play at the speeds they should, and you can do whatever you want in the Linux environment with near (I haven't met any of the apps I need under *nix that really gets sluggish in vmware).

Also good for sorting hardware issues (*nix hates my router and my graphics card).

Oh, and I must say ubuntu is actually pretty good. I switched to it as soon as I heard about the apt-get feature, which is pretty nice. Still as awkward and useless to me as all other linux distros, but I'm required to do shell scripting and some other terminal stuff for University so it became the "lesser of the evils".

Debian is good, and as I have said before Ubuntu is loosely based on debian. But, Debian is a pain in the arse to get installed, and is really only for people who know exactly what they're doing in linux.

Doh, you don't seem to understand the halo effect. With the iPod, the idea was that you give people a small taste of the apple experience on a pc (iTunes + iPod integration and UI), and hope that people love it enough to go out and buy a mac to have the whole experience. If Firefox wasn't available for windows then this really wouldn't work. In the firefox case the "taste" you are given is of the customisation, features well in advance of IE and security.

Are you living under a rock? becos is the only way you couldnt hear that the entire state of germany is moving to linux. We are talking of the biggest economy in europe, moving all their state owned computers and mainframes to windows.

MS was so desperated that they offered 50% discount on license fees to the germans....

But one thing is an app, an another one is an entire OS. Plus as you said, customizable distros like debian are a pain in the ass to install.

And mac sales are still way behind those of the ipod. the problem is the ipod has become more of a fashion/culture ratter than a real gadget example. The bussines model of the system is pretty much the same of any other fashion bussines out there.

On the other hand, linux still requires some user knowledge, something most of the people dont have nor want to exercise. Unless we see a true plug&play linux, the average user is going to keep his machine windows only.

  12. Deathcoaster: Is VMWare anything like Cygwin?

Sort of. Cygwin is like a linux distro installed on top of windows, allowing you to run *nix code in windows, whereas VMWare is a virtual computer - so you open the software and it has a bios etc. which you can install an OS on top of. Functionally they're pretty similar.
Cygwin is faster, but VMWare has more compatibility

Vmware is much better. I have Cygwin and find it, in the most part, useless for my *nix needs. Lots of the stuff I need is specific to switching between GUI and terminal stuff...where as to my knowledge, Cygwin is Terminal only(as much as I have used it, anyway).

Vmware is pretty good app all round. Linux under VMware runs better than when I had dual boot (due to all my hardware compatability issues). Plus I find Windows with Vmware linux runs better than Linux with Vmware Windows.

XP doesn't need anywhere near 512 MB of RAM to run well. If it is "running like a dog" on less then you've got issues elsewhere in the machine.

Linux distros have some pretty sweet hardware detection. Have you ever bothered to boot a Knoppix CD? The average user just has to drop and go.

Damn people, stop fighting. I didn't want to start a war when i mentioned Linux. I was just trying to share a good experience with an OS.

I'm not trying to convert everybody to Linux, so use whatever you want. I'm enjoying Ubuntu, but some people don't like it.

At this moment i'm testing the latest version of Kurumin Linux 5.10 (Live CD), a brazilian linux distribution based on Knoppix. It's good but i simply don't like KDE. But some people like it.

It's a true fact that some people use Linux in a way they simply don't need Windows (using VMWare, Wine, ...), but i don't want that. That's why i have both, on the same computer.

Yeah I know, in fact i burned some discs with kloppix so my non-tech friends could try linux by themselves.

But you cant deny most of lunix goodies are on debian and other more painful-to-install distros.

And jonnhy, is not that I dont like ubuntu, I dont know it, but at the same time I'm hearin some nasty stuff about that distro so I'm kinda undecided on the subject.

And yes, dual-boot is the best way around. You never know when you'll need windows

tried to run knoppix cause some sites suggested that it supports testdisk (one of my hdd screwed up so i wanted to use that) but guess what with that fine newly downloaded 4.02 or so knoppix u cant run testdisk anymore
so after i couldnt even install that after 14hours of reading tutorials forums and newsgroups i just scrapped the idea and used testdisk under windowsxp so much to my first experience with linux (and yes now i hate that whole incompatability with rpm, precompiled packets and tar gnuzips which run only under one of those dozen distros)
