I am looking to get a web hosting/registrar service.
Several years ago I had used GoDaddy and had a great experience. Would have rated my overall experience as excellent.
They still seem to have the best package deals out there for Hosting/domain registration combo. Seems no one else offers so many features for such a low price. So I am tempted to GoDaddy again.

But I have been reading some reviews and found a few worrying reports of Godaddy having some dubious business practices, like opportunistic domain name robbery, or sites being taken down without notice after fake copyright infringement complaints.
Or just plain bad customer support.

I personally had great customer support in my 2 years with GoDaddy but that was back in 2006-2008. Things might have changed.

I would never use godaddy.

Use namecheap instead.

Godaddy has in the past sided with sopa, until outrage made them change their view.

Then the CEO killed an elephant for pleasure on a hunting trip, and posted videos of him doing so.

Namecheap believes in free expression and an open Internet. If you do too, please join us for the third annual MoveYourDomain Day on February 5. We launched this initiative in late 2011 to fight SOPA, a bill that would've imposed unfair censorship on ordinary web users.
On MoveYourDomain Day 2014, you can transfer your .com, .net, .biz, .org or .info domain for only $3.98, and shared/business/reseller hosting packages will be available at 75% off. Simply use the coupon NCMYDD to transfer your domains and HOSTWITHNC on your hosting deal. We'll donate $0.50 to $1.50 per transaction to the Electronic Frontier Foundation in support of digital freedom.
Thanks for being part of this important effort. Click here to visit the MYDD page and learn more.
We also want to let you know that new TLDs will be offered on February 5th, starting at 11am EST! Check out our website to be one of the first to own your own .guru, .bike, .clothing, .holdings, .ventures, .singles, or .plumbing domain.

Totally agree with Assembler on all accounts. GoDaddy is a shady company.

I use namcheap for domain stuff and I use other services for hosting the actual hardware. No complaints yet really.

NameCheap was actually my second choice. And I may go with it if only for moral reasons.

I personally had very good service from GoDaddy before, and they cost a bit less and have unlimited storage vs 100gb compared to Namecheap
But some of the things ive been reading about godaddy lately sure got my eyebrow raised.

I switched away from GoDaddy after the SOPA shenanigans, now with NameCheap. Both were pretty much fine service wise.

Dreamhost also seemed fine from my dabblings.

Never used godaddy precisely because of all the negative things I've heard about it. I used hostgator in the past, but I'd recommend avoiding them, as their support sucks, despite advertising an unlimited bandwidth, they cap it at around 250 gigs, and automatically charge your card for renewal without asking a thing, etc. Hostmonster is pretty much the same as I'm told, as it's owned by the same people.

Linode have an interesting concept but I think a cheap shared hosting will do for now. So far seems that namecheap has the most votes.
This is what I am aiming for at this point.

If you are doing anything even semi interesting, you will out grow shared hosting pretty quickly.

"Interesting" is a relative concept.
My father has a small website that he actually hosts himself on an old celeron 333mhz machine, with his own residential cable connection. He has his .com domain that he bought long ago.
He is currently overpaying for a crappy host for his home page only and use a flaky redirection scheme to update the home page to his dynamic residential ip.
Now he wants to start messing around with wordpress and try stuff. I convinced him it would be for the better to get a hosting so we can try moving all his stuff there and he can stop paying the other host and save money and have more possibilities and reliability.

I will also be able to use the hosting for myself, I will get a personal domain and If I want to make a little page and try stuff on my own I will have to possibility to do it as my Dad's stuff will not take a lot of space and bandwidth.
So you see, its nothing even semi interesting really, hence I think shared hosting will suffice for now. If we eventually grow out of it, thanks for pointing at Linode, I like their formula.

Excellent support, good packages. Also if you buy a .info domain, they hide your dns details for free so noone can find you on they who.is databases.
One friend of mine received a letter (no webmail, paper :p) from some african country stating that they have bought the domain and wanted money to give it back. -_-

I hear NameCheap and HostGator are a good combo for domain registration and hosting. I've got a domain registered with NameCheap but haven't got down to hosting anything yet.

Or, for a bit of fun, you could go with Hostmania, Brother!

Might as well hand your data over to the gov-ment right now. Godaddy will hand over domains no questions asked.

I registered a domain with namecheap. But I have not paid a hosting service yet. I will most likely go with namecheap for that too.

I can't remember who I originally had registered my domain with, but over the years it eventually ended up being on Godaddy. I've never hosted anything on their servers tho, I just point the A record to where my website is actually located.
