I'm planning on buying a PS2 for some candy playing ;)

Now i want to ask which version is the best to buy. I want to install a modchip to make it region free and have some nice extra options (i'm not talking about copied games etc.). I also want to add the Ethernet and HDD addons.

I heard that some version have a shitty laser, i hope you guys can help me, but i know you can :D

Can I just piggyback this thread to ask if anyone knows any negatives about the jap slimline ps2. Does it have a crap laser? I have a choice between the ceramic pstwo and the midnight black PS2 you see.

I heard that version 5, which I have, is the best for modding. I never did it because HDLoader is fine and you are at least renting the games..lol

From what I looked at when fixing up my $44 ps2 I got off ebay, I saw plenty of people just overall like the 39001 (v7) and say that it has the best laser.

My lil' brothers own a V7 PS2. It hasn't been cleaned in like 2 years now and their games are scratched as hell, and the freaking thing can still play DVDs and not get any DREs.

I don't know if I should get a slimline PS2 or get a cheaper ps2 and trade it with my bros for their v7.

well I've "repaired" a few ps2's off ebay and all they really need is some TLC. People let a once expensive machine get nasty as fuck and sell it when it breaks down. I only do that for lawnmowers...lol

I've only ran into a few that were truely FUBAR'd and I just used them for parts....

I haven't had any problems at all with my slim PSTwo, but I have an American system. The little things hate the Swap Magic discs, though. I can get them to work, but it requires a lot of patience.

I plas planning on modding it to use swap discs, but if thats the case, then I might go for the older version.

Liquitt - I love the ps2! I happen to like the design and think it is a very solid machine. I also happen to have a good amount of PS2s at the moment. Just for gaming uses, as it is something I use every day I like to change it as the Special editions come along. It is my proverbial staple diet. So I figure a slimline one might look quite good as well as be a bit of a change.

As my regular jap ps2 are yet to fail me, I would recommend one for you as well.

Well I'm getting a Pstwo anyway (ceramic one preferably) I just wanted to know if there are any known problems, google turned up the occasional "burn out" result. But I'm a bit more careful than that.

I think my model of the PS2 is omni-ultimate, since it never ever broke. I dont know what the number is at the moment.

well like I said a few posts up, the ones I've come across as "OMG My ps2 is teh broe.kn," on ebay just have been cared for poorly. I don't think the ps2 quality is as bad as everyone hypes it to be.

I'm sure the same people get mad when their car breaks down after two years with no oil change. Gotta take of your shit.

Sorry I have never modded a ps2, all original Jap (can't see it makes much of a difference if you are going to mod it - but Jap ones have good lasers). Most have HDD and all the official Jap HDD are still working perfectly. Also you can get a Japanese program (you have to pay) that allows you to run games from the HDD if the correct disk is installed and then inserted every time you play. Now if only I could find it! It only cost a couple of thousand yen but it is super rare.

Aside, if anyone has that hdloading disk (jap-only methinks) that doesn't need a mod, tell me. I have money.... It may well have been cancelled for all I know, I recall reading about it on magicbox though.

The plastic piece I was given to hold the back sensor down causes the lid to stay up partway. I dremeled it down, but that still leaves the front sensor to deal with. The "switch" they gave me broke. I leave the back sensor on and when I use it to play anything, I have to tape down the front sensor and leave the tray open.
