we all know that the PC engine is the best machine to run Metal Gear Solid 3, you don't have to say it.
would sweet talking it once a week while cleaning it be too much TLC?......has anyone else had the PSTwo lid jam before?.....also it feels somewhat cheap..the lid that is.....
The newer model of the slimline, v.13, has the burn-out problem of the laser fixed. Plus the PStwo looks a lot easier to mod chip too. It's just a pity it's a mission to get a HDD wired in. Hooray for EEUG's Simple Media System, finally a decent homebrew project for the PS2.
Just like to point out of the slim line PS2's run quite hot and that their lasers are shite. My laser only lasted 6 months before kicking the bucket. My older PS2 which was a version 3 lasted 2 years without any repairs and then 1 year after the first repair...
Haha, thats sort of how I got mine, but it was free since someone I knew had 2 and one didnt work. I have about 3 in my closet that I use for parts that were totally dead when people gave me them, and my main one just had DRE and was really gross. A few clicks of the wheel and a can of compressed air did the trick and saved me 150$ or so.
Glad to see that everybody agrees with me, my Super CD Rom 2 unit is 10-15 years and plays CDs like a charm my PS2 is 3 years old and is struggling with everything that looks like a cd or dvd and oh yeah Memory card too. It's gotta be a Sony thing crapness, I bought a T1 digital camera brand new for my parents and it lasted for about 3 months and Sony didn't want to repair, so I'm done with Sony. Everybody I know who have a PS2 always come back to me for repair, lens cleaning, laser adjustment. PS2 is like a PC there's always something wrong with it  Hence my comment PS2's crap. I don't even find MGS3 that good, I hears Splinter Cell's better, but I do love MGS 1 and 2 fantastic games  . Sabre
I have a modded V6 and its plays fine all the time.I dont use the dvd drive that much, I use the HDD more for games. But I never had a D-R-E at all. But my brother has a NTSC launch ps2.And it still plays game just fine to this day.
I've had a V7 (PAL model is the SCPH-39003) since christmas 2002 and it's never given me any trouble, though sometimes it takes a while to start loading dual-layer games (i'll see the system menu come up for a split second before it starts). I have a friend who repairs/mods PS2s and also agrees that it's the best model - unfortunately they're getting on a bit now, though - the newer model with built-in remote sensor replaced it in Europe some time around mid-late 2003 (or was there a model inbetween the two?). So if what StarWolf said is true about the V13 being not shit, then you may be better off with that.
Well I have lots of HDD and there is not a lot of point to be honest (unless you love the rpgs). It means it takes about a minute to start up before you can get to your saves. However to play the games with HDD enabled is a utter joy! Popolocrois, Star Ocean, Wild Arms, Xenosaga, FFX are all wonderful with HDD support. If only they hadn't given up on it, why does Xenosaga 2 not have hdd support?! HDD is only worth it if you are going to mod to get HDLoader going or if you love the Japanese rpgs. Then you really have to get a fat ps2, to get it looking good. BTW I'll be getting a slimline ps2 for everyday use sometime next week, hurrah!
Well, a friend of mine that ownz a repair / modchip install store always say this: The 30001R and 39001 are the ones that don't cause much problems. And if they have problems, they are easier to fix.
the thing is: stop comparing apples with oranges. Your comment sounded like an advice: "don't buy the ps2, buy Pc engine instead". While i like the PC engine, you have to understand that he doesn't want a ps2 because of what it is. He wants a ps2 for what it have. He knows like anyone else that the hardware is crap, but is the console itself is crap for this reason? that you like it or not, most 3rd party developers develop for the ps2, and the console have alot of games you just cannot miss, like the PC engine.
What does the HDD add to those games? I have Xenosaga but no HDD. Are the american versions supported or just the japanese ones? And you have to have official HDD too don't you?
You need a Japanese copy of the game and the official sony HDD. You may be able to mod your way through it, but I don't know about that. They actually removed the code that enabled HDD support on the american games to my knowledge, so it is probably impossible on the us versions. As for the advantages of this, well just of the top of my head, ie some good examples. FFX - runs in higher resolution with reduced loading time (you do notice the higher resolution) Xenosaga - saves to the HDD and has HUGELY reduced loading times! Star Ocean 3 - solves the crashing issues that the first print has! And has reduced loads. Vampire Chronicles - zero loads. Popolocrois - tiny loads, very big difference, 5-8 seconds to 1 second. Big mention goes to unlimited saga, you know when you play that game it sounds like your ps2 is going to explode and it takes ages to load. That is one game that *needs* the HDD, I have a feeling the amount of loading that does would blow your ps2 up if you played it for a day solid. With HDD it runs like a dream and makes the game worth playing. Wild Arms f - virtually loads everything from the HDD, but original loads were not that bad. EDIT - forgot to say, that while installing you do get some original content on some games, like a remixed track you won't hear anywhere else or some CG you will not see anywhere else. Popolocrois even gives you some manga to read while it installs! Anyway you get the idea. Though I'm noticing loads of games coming out now that would work great with the HDD, are not supporting it now. Which is now why I'm putting all my HDD enabled ps2 aside (just for playing years from now) and moving to the slimline. Potentially Dirge of Cerebus will use the HDD as it is online and I have heard tell of hideous load times.
Shocking isn't it that you actually have to ask on a forum which model of PS2 itsn't going to break after 2 weeks. I mean, it's the most popular video game console in the world, and if it decides it's having a bad day - that's it no more PS2. As for the slimline PStwos, I think they look damn sexy, in ceramic white and black. The silver version looks tacky for some reason. Only problem with the HDD is that although the connections are there, the firmware can't actually see it; the only way to use it is via a mod-chip. Which basically means no Official games that use the HDD will use it nor can you use the Linux kit. Bah. As for the HDD being external, I'd put it inside one of the vertical stands, with the IDE cable going out of the side of the PStwo for a nice neat connection.
I've given up on Sony and their Playstation. I'm sorry, but I just don't think I should have to buy more than one console if I don't want to. After my PS2 broke, I never bought a new one even though I have some unbeaten games for it. I concentrated my money on XBOX games and XBOX Live, and I am very pleased so far. Splinter Cell > Metal Gear Solid
splinter cell is way too linear. Metal gear solid is linear too, but at least it have a great story, an amazing scenario and a spectacular orchestration, making it an epic serie. The only reason why i like Splinter cell is for the Multiplayer, wich is one of the best and most technically advanced multiplayer i have seen so far. I can't stand the singleplayer. I play it a bit, and i don't want to continue after 2 or 3 hours. Anyway, this isn't a Splinter cell VS metal gear thread.
The Splinter cell serie looks good to me. Im more into MGS, though, since its not all modern weaponry, IMO. All Modern type games bore me a little. But the fact that MGS has big ol' nasty ol' mean ol' mechs walkin' around. BTW, AWS, how much MGS have you played? I havent played much of Splinter Cell, but it looks great to me. Whenever Shane brought one of the sequels over, I was in awe of how great the graphics were, and how smooth it was. I need to put that one on teh list.
