For a franchise to be whored out it has to have at least 1 game on everysystem........EVER and been merchandised though the roof Mario would be an execption because he's a first party mascot that's been in like......every type of game ever. My guesses Mario, Sonic, Street Fighter and Mega Man.
well for a start you can exclude mario as i doubt that nintendo will ever licence it out to other consoles, apart from that pretty much anything by ea, need for speed, burnout, fifa and all the other sports titles
As soon as I saw "whored out" I thought of Street Fighter and Resident Evil. Capcom is pretty bad for doing that sort of thing with their titles.
Mario & Sonic. Horring out has nothing to do with being on multiple platforms or being a copanie's mascott, it flat out has to do with the character being in everything imaginable. Case in point mario has been in everything from sports, party games to even beeing a referie in early nes sports games (Punch Out, Tennis, Hockey...). Sonic is not as bad as mario but he has shown up in other sega games in some fasion and has had off shoot games as well.
Errr... how about FIFA/NFL/NHL/Army Men? I dunno, I was never that irked when a new Street Fighter or RE game came out, very often they came with a change in gameplay/storyline. The three franchises I mentioned above are, in my opinion, a whole lot more stagnant.
I don't really care about recurring mascots. Generally, so long as the game itself is good, the avatar is unimportant. Certainly, the more I play a game the less attention I pay to the characters. Although that's not as true for games that emphasise narrative and atmosphere, I guess. Whoring out a franchise to me would mean degrading it to the point where it's not worth playing any more, just pumping out games because they'll sell adequately despite not being any good. Sonic is the first one that springs to mind. Army Men too, but were they ever any good?
and we have quite a few unresolved storylines in Mega man land. The Events inbetween Zero's ending in X6 and the start of the Zero series The Gap between Wily showing Bass Zero in Power Battles and the start of the X series...... unresolved While we're at it do we even have the slightest clue what happend in between SF II and III? Capcom is Japanese for Plot holes Capcom is of the state of mind we'll buy anything they pump out in their popular franchises so the hell with storylines and things like Continuity.
Sonic the hedgehog completely changed platform gaming in my opinion, the speed of the game seemed pretty much unmatched and had great music and visuals. The franchise has become very stagnant in the last five years, but simply put i believe it was extremely good to begin with.
Hmm i think EA and their need for speed series is whored out too much, You had all the old NFS games then they made it into NFS underground but its pretty much got so boring now.
mario brothers cereal anyone? mario cassette player? Mario band-aids? It only seems whored out when the game sucks imho.
That reminds me.... didnt they have a collection of Super Mario Bros Soda? Like a red mario can, a green yoshi one, etc. Or maybe I dreamed that up? :110:
Well, I decided to stop being lazy and search for Mario Soda, and my first search came up with EXACTLY the same thing I remember. Infact, I think I have some unopened cans of each of these somewhere... (My mom bought them back in the day, She loved Super Mario World, hahaha) http://www.smbhq.com/soda.htm Yummy!
I believe, historically, it's pac-man. They even had a pac-man disco record.... I think that tops pretty much anything.
and the Pac Man Cartoon that hanna barbera did which you can download 13 episodes of on XBOX Live now. (I have 2 and they are SOooooooooo cleche it's not funny but for historical reasons check it out if you have MS points to burn)
