I'm curious to know what are our preferred consoles on this forum, so (to repeat the old, old question) - if you were going to be stuck on a desert island and could choose one console and all of it's games to take with you, which would you choose?

    A few rules;

    1. Only judge the console by it's commercial games library, not it's homebrew games or homebrew emulators (i.e. you can choose the Dreamcast because you like it's Dreamcast games, but if you like the SNES better than the Dreamcast then you can't vote for the Dreamcast and say "Well, the Dreamcast let's me play Dreamcast games and also all SNES games, using the SNES emulator", only games officially for the console you choose are allowed to affect your choice. Officially available games, such as the VC range on the Wii, are allowed, as they are commercial (and if there was a SNES collection officially available for the Dreamcast (I don't think so?) then that would be allowed, of course), but since these allow only some games then don't say "I vote for the Wiii - my favourite is actually the NES, but I can play NES games on the Wii, so the Wii let's me play NES and Wii games" unless the Wii plays the NES games that you want.

    2. Don't employ nostalgia, vote for the machine (actually the games library) that you'd want to play when stuck on that desert island. Otherwise some people might say "I voted for machine x, which I've kind of outgrew now, I couldn't go back to graphics that old, but back in the day I loved that console. Now I only play on machine y".

    3. Since this is hypothetical, assume that lasers don't wear out, joypads don't break, etc. So build quality isn't a problem. Otherwise some people might not vote for their favourite console as it's (in)famous for it's laser burning out after a few years, or the joypads are prone to breakdown, etc.

Remember, vote according to which single machine will play your favourite overall library of games. Nothing else is relevant.

Since there's a maximum of 25 options in the poll, I've had to miss out a few (Atari 5200, Atari 7800, NGage, and Wonderswan), plus I've maybe missed a few others. Please vote other, if your favourite is not on the list, and post saying which machine you mean. I've not included handhelds (as far as I know),and I have included the Wii-U, XBox One and PS4, in case anyone prefers their (limited due to the consoles' youth) game libraries.

Anyway, I'm voting for the N64, as to me it has my favourite games library of any single console. Perfect Dark and Goldeneye are my two favourite games ever (PD has a great port on the XBox 360, but some of the changes are for the worse, I think, so I play the N64 version instead), and many of my other favourite games are on the N64 too, including Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Rocket: Robot on Wheels, Beetle Adventure Racing, Jet Force Gemini, Body Harvest, Duke Nukem: Zero Hour (the best ever Duke Nukem game, IMHO), Super Mario 64, and quite a few more. Plus if I do get stuck on that desert island, I'll find time to play the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and the Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, and find out what all the fuss is about.

    What's your choice?

I gotta go with PS2. It doesn't have my #1 favorite game (that's on GC and DC), but it has all the others. It's got a good mix of my favorite games in most of my favorite genres - jRPG, Fighters, and enough shooters to keep me happy. So while it doesn't have Ikaruga, it does have Psyvariar 2, Espgaluda and DDP: Dai Ou Jou.

    DC comes close, though.

It also has a good dose of weirdness/unique games on there.

Oh man, that is so hard. For me the SNES or more the SFC, Mega Drive and Saturn are all fantastic consoles with so many games that I loved and still do. In the end I went for the Saturn. The Japanese released had some amazing titles that never made it to the west plus loads of classics that I really hammered in the day.

I have to go with the Genesis. It and the Saturn capture everything I like about video games. They have every genre covered with a quality that no other console rivals.

It's something I've thought about a lot (and I'm sure any serious gamer has at some point), and it's rather difficult, but I think I'd have to go with the Dreamcast. It has some of the best games of all time (Shenmue, DOA2, Crazy Taxi, Soul Caliber), it has a great library of nearly perfect arcade ports (because of the Naomi), it had several ports of games on other systems (PSX, N64, PC) that were superior to any other version, it's very compact and attractive, and it arguably has the highest quality video output of any console of that generation (DC/PS2/GC/Xbox). Those are just some of its finer points; there are many things I like about the Dreamcast.

The runner-up would probably be the Genesis/MD - partly because I grew up with it, but I haven't grown out of it by any means. I still love it for its colorful graphics and memorable music, among other things. It's hard to say that I like the Dreamcast more than the Genesis, but ultimately it has Shenmue.

I have to go with the Super Famicom because, it has my favorite genres perfected to some degree & second would come Playstation 1 & Sega Genesis/Mega Drive!

    Nintendo 64.

I like a lot of games, really.

StarFox 64, for example, is one of the few "perfect" games in my opinion. Perfect learning curve for anyone, and garanteed fun. It's not even my favorite game.
The best Star Wars games ever released.
Racing games that I like. Pokémon. Rare at its best.
My favorite controller. The Controller Pak is the cutest accessory ever created by humanity.

It's the best system and I love it. Of course it should have had Street Fighter, but the Saturn is there for that. Sorry about the engrish.

N64 was the console that made me like video games in the first place.

N64 is pretty high on my list as well, but it's not my favorite console ever.

Classic Xbox all the way. That thing was a game changer (literally) when it came out and the games are awesome. I know I grew up on the Genesis and Dreamcast but I've played most of the Genesis games already and I'm waiting for DCIO on the Dreamcast before I go back to it. So I'll stick with the first Xbox until then.

This is tough... I think I'd probably say the Saturn because of its massive amount of Shooters & Fighters. Especially thinking of (except arcade) exclusive gems like Garegga, Batsugun, Marvel Super Heroes vs. SF and more. So much arcade love on this console, and plenty of classics compilations for the older days. There are plenty of games on other consoles that I wouldn't want to miss in any way, though, especially PC-Engine, PlayStation, GameCube and Famicom.

I would have to say the Snes. It coincided with the time that I spent most of my hours playing games and 2d games are still my favourite to be honest.

Anything Nintendo made for it was gold and Konami's stuff for it was amazing too.

For sentimental reasons alone I might have went with the Atari 2600 as it was my first console.

Nintendo 64, first console I ever got and still today I enjoy it. Other consoles other than XBOX I kinda don't have any attachment to.

Hard call between the SNES and the N64. The N64 was the console of my childhood and when I play Super Mario 64 I almost begin to cry because I remember the time when I played it the first on a store display, when my friend bought a N64, when we played it together. But since I got myself an SNES last year I have to admit that it does have the better game library since the only good games on the N64 are 1st/2nd party ones. While on the SNES you also got games from Square before they melt down into Square Enix.
So the winner for me is SNES.

I would say Genesis or Snes but when I got the saturn it change my life so I go for the Saturn and its library, not a big one like the PS1 or 2 but a good one with great ports and nice games. Second goes for the dreamcast.

I voted Xbox. Was thinking N64 but that would be more nostalgic for me and probably not hold up so well today.

On the Xbox you've got a fantastic library - racing, shooters, platformers, puzzlers... I don't think I could ever get bored of that game library. Just yesterday I popped in Simpsons Hit N Run and it was awesome for a quick 45 minute play.

I have to pick PS2, since you can't count the Wii. The SNES/Dreamcast are really close.

The PS2 has a lot of games, that I'm still playing even into this day, a situation made worse due to Gamestop's 75% off sale.

If I included as a whole, with hardware and library combined, the SNES handily wins. The PS2 stock controller is decent and gets things done, but I really like a good D-Pad.

    Ahh love Polls like this...

Gotta go with my the Nintendo 64. So many quality titles.

Honestly, the 3rd party support for GOOD games wasn't the best, and probably the worst for a Nintendo system aside from maybe the Wii, but the 1st and 2nd party titles were so abundant due to the Nintendo-Rareware duo, just to name a few.. Ocarina of time, Majoras Mask, Super Mario 64, DK 64, Jet Force Gemini, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Diddy Kong Racing, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart 64, Conker Bad Fur Day which has a BUILDING cult following...ahh love that system

I love when people can look past a system lacking things like you said, a Street Fighter, or maybe a lot of RPG's or whatever you name it, and can appreciate a system for what it DOES do right...and in the case of the N64 I agree, some games like Star fox 64 are just 100% perfect.

I know you'll agree on the next game I mention being perfect....Perfect Dark, and how the N64 version is superior in my opinion to the XBLA version. It's all about the controller, and with a "one control stick shooter" like any shooter on the N64 or Dreamcast versus modern 2 joystick ones for example, you can use the 1.2 or Solitaire or Expert control setting to have the stick dictate aiming and the C-Buttons on N64(face buttons on dreamcast) control forward-backward movement and STRAFING. Any true N64 FPS fan knows what I'm talking about... And I know the XBLA version does the game justice, and I really like how they stabilized the frame rate AND did some work on the textures.
