I find the amount of N64 votes disturbing

This is such a tough choice to make, having the choice of generation would have been easier. But... I'll have to go with SNES.

Wow, so far the N64 is leading (seven votes), I'd have thought the PS2, Dreamcast, or SNES (or maybe NES) would win. Still, it's early days, lots more people might vote yet.

I didn't have a console in the fourth generation (the N64 was my first console, before that I was a computer gamer), but I saw (and seen since) enough of the Megadrive and to know that it had a lot of fantastic games in many genres, and if I had had one back then then perhaps my answer would be different now.

The XBox is my second favourite console, as it has so many great first and third person shooters, including exclusive (well, other than on the PC) games, plus maybe the best arena shooter (arena shooter = games like Quake 3 and the Unreal Tournament games, FPSs with no single player campaign, just arena based matches against humans or bots) ever, in my opinion, Unreal Championship 2 (which *should* have appeared on the PC too, as it really deserved some user made levels and mods), plus the 'custom soundtrack' feature, whereby you can play your own songs (that you copied to your XBox's hard drive, from your audio CDs) in games (as long as the game allows, such games include GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, Burnout 2, and Midnight Club 3).

The SNES has an amazing library. I don't know about the 2600 (ages since I've played on one, and even then it was very rare for me), but I know some people still love it, and even make homebrew games for it (and apparently it's really hard to program for, which shows how much they must love it, if they take the trouble to learn and use the hardware).

Another machine with a fantastic library. And unlike the N64, you got variety as well as quality. Alright, so the N64's library wasn't nearly as limited as its detractors would have you believe ("It's all racing games, and childish platform games, blah blah blah..."), but the PSX had *much* more variety, including the third party mega-hits that never saw an N64 release (Tomb Raider, GTA, Silent Hill, Driver, Tekken, Metal Gear Solid, etc).

Not counting emulation or flash cart, it would be Atari Lynx. I have all but 3 commercially released games so fairly large library game. Even though the games are physically small and a stack of 4 N64 carts can easily dwarf 50+ Lynx games. :D

SNES for me. The ratio of quality to crap in its library really is great.

The SNES is currently in the lead (nine votes). I don't think anyone would cry "Foul!!!" if it won, as even people who don't have one surely have to admit that it's a great machine with a quality library. Donkey Kong Country 2 is maybe my favourite SNES platformer, or maybe Earthworm Jim. I've always meant to give DKC3 and Yoshi's Island a fair go, as I've never tried them except briefly on emulation (I'm lucky, in a way, that I like playing 8 and 16 bit games on emulator, as it means I can try them all - some people have to use the original hardware (they say they can 'feel' the difference) and so they can't try any particular game unless they can buy or borrow it, or use a back up device).

And even though I'm not a fan of racing games, I did play two player Super Mario Kart a fair few times, that's an utterly classic game.

Indeed. The SNES is a classic, and if the Saturn did not exist it would likely be my #1 (Dreamcast gets the shaft a bit because everything on it has been ported for the most part).

Now if a Sony machine was in the lead...

SNES got my vote by a narrow margin. If the scenario allowed at least one other person stranded with me to play with then the decision would have ended a lot differently.

either PS1 or PS2 for me (voted for the latter)
grew up on the former, which has a lot of great games in terms of the overall package of gameplay, tech, sound and gfx, and loved the latter, as not only it supports PS1 games, but also comes with a giant library itself (which has a lot of cool titles and im still looking for stuff that I like that I havent discovered yet ._.)

The SNES is now leading the poll with almost double the votes for the next favourite (thirteen votes, versus seven for the N64).

I'm surprised no one's yet voted for the Neo-Geo, considering how devoted it's fans seem to be.

Uhhh nope, those are on the PC. No Star Wars game is anywhere near as good as X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing Alliance or Jedi Knight, and technically the KotOR games are on PC too. AFAIK the N64 just had the shitty Shadows of the Empire and the OK at best Rogue Squadron.

Tough choice between the Megadrive, PS1 and PS2. But PS2 wins out in the end

Tekken, MGS, RE, FFX (last good FF game imo), Persona, Dragon Quest VIII, Smackdown : Shut Your Mouth/Here Comes The Pain, Kingdom Hearts, Yakuza.......i could go on and on lol

though Dreamcast has many of my favorites, i gotta go with the Genesis...even looking at my backloggery, it's where i played most of my games. as an SMS kid it was where Sega finally shined & came out firing on all cylinders, and even the weird side stuff like Sega-CD, 32x etc provide me with a great time even to this day...my recent diving into the Saturn library brought that one high up on my list as well, but it's Genesis all day overall.

As far as I know, all four Star Wars games on the N64 (Shadows of the Empire (I don't know if it's any good or not, but lots of people love/loved it) Rogue Squadron, Battle for Naboo, and Episode One: Racer) are all on the PC too, and since the PC also has other Star Wars games, then you are right, the PC is best for Star Wars games. But this topic is about consoles, not the PC. And even though I love the N64, I think I'd say that console wise, the best for Star Wars games is the XBox, since it has KOTOR 1 and 2, Battlefield 1 and 2, Republic Commando, plus two LEGO Star Wars games, and others. It's the two Battlefield games that swing it for me. But it's all down to personal taste.

Just the fact that the PS2 has Deus Ex makes it fantastic*! The fact that the PS2 also has very good games in just about every genre you can name (well, aside from real time strategy games, and point and click games, but neither genre has really made the leap to console) and has such a huge library of games, also add to the PS2's greatness.

    * Plus it has Global Defence Force, Bully, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, and lots more...
