I'm in a similar situation as OP, I picked up a PlayStation, opened it up, and found a mystery mod chip in it:

It plays both imports and FF8 fine (though I'm playing a PAL version on a PAL console might the chip be shutting off if it detects a PAL game?), so I don't think it's one of those crappy ones that was mentioned before. The guy who installed it must have been some sorta ninja, since he was able to do it without damaging the security sticker that covers one of the screws, normally if you peel this back, it leaves behind shiny bits of sticker and won't stick down again.

Really? So same as OP then? I'll download an NTSC version of FF8 and see if it triggers the anti-piracy warning.

Yes, you can try. The result it's the antipiracy warning ;)
It's the same chip that OP have, but in the last two models PU22 and PU23 yo can use only 3 wire thanks to the link wire method :)

Add a switch to diasable the chip after the PS SCEX logo. You will be able to play anti mod games without updating the chip.

Downloaded an NTSC copy of FF8. Burned it to a disk and... It plays! What manner of witchcraft is this? Isn't FF8 suppose to not work on this modchip?

My friend tell me that is an one of the first old oldcrow modchip before it was ported to the microchip PIC series.

@Fireaza. I don't know why, but at 100% that chip don't have stealth features.

It could be the gary opa port, IIRC he said the chip turns off after boot. So it might work with some Anti-mod games, the ones that check for the chip after the intro or at the menu.

Interesting, what games might I have trouble with? FF8 seems to work fine, got to the main menu and started watching the opening cutscene with no error messages. I'm gonna download Spyro 3 and see if it also works.

Garyopa port is based upon the pic 12f629. A good test must be with Ntsc unpatched version of Dino Crisis.

I have a 4 wire chip thats on a 12C509 (so not garyopa), that also boots my copies of spyro and dino crisis. If I put the same games in a Infinity modded PS2 with "multi disc PS1" enable - get I the warning, so the game isnt pre patched.

I have soldered in a PCB for testing some chips, will test old crow and see what the behaviour is

Gah, I'm having trouble finding non-patched versions of Spyro 3 and Dino Crisis for testing. A bit of a weird request, but can someone point me in the right direction to download one?

Okay, I've got a Spyro 3 iso that matches the MD5 on redump.org and burned it to a CD-R. Game seems to play fine, no piracy messages. What now?

Just wanted to say that I modchipped my SCPH-1002 (PU-8) with a pic16f84a and it works fine, the PlayStation boots any games and I even tried to boot Spyro 3 (PAL) and Ape Escape (J) (the same disc that got a piracy message with another PS). I haven't tried any other protected games, but I imagine that they would also work.

Net Yaroze with a Old Crow chip?
I can't say how silly it is(no I don't talk about you if you wonder,it's about the previous owner that maybe thought it's a regular Playstation)to do something like that.

Seems like a reasonable idea - you would end up with a machine that would generate correctly encoded video in both PAL and NTSC modes, and could also boot CD-Rs. You could get close to it with a retail with a modchip + color mod, but it would still end up running at slightly the wrong frequency in the non-native video mode.

    Edit:

Now, putting an anti-piracy mod chip into a Yaroze really would be stupid :)
