I'm more excited about picking up older hardware these days than anything on the horizon. 1000s of games are already out there waiting for me to play them. This gen was OK until everyone started abusing DLC. So what's your tipping point?
Lack of innovation. The Wii was the only console I felt gave me a truly unique gaming experience. The Xbox 360 is fine, but damn, it almost feels like it's just a generic console now. The Kinect lacks the ability to support a deep game unfortunately. The next generation I swear will just be more shit motion control and better graphics, along with online being a complete necessity The beginning of the gen was good but now it's shit.
Probably just losing interest in video games altogether, which I'm pretty sure has been happening to me for a while now. I'll still always like the old stuff and anything relatively simple like fighting games, but the fact that story-telling in video games probably won't ever progress beyond simplistic and juvenile crap is what puts me off anything that expects me to actually care about the story, with some exceptions like Deus Ex: Human Revolution that attempts some form of commentary on technology and transhumanism, but doesn't go quite far enough with it (and it's nothing that cyberpunk movies and literature haven't done in the past 30 years already)
Forgot to until after I hit Post If only my teenage self could see now. If I went back in time and say Hey 15 year old me who hates the N64...I gotta tell you something when you're 30....the system you'll be most excited about getting will be an N64
I'll boycott the next gen systems if you can't play anything offline. Download only would be alright, only if the games were DRM free (ha). And if disc-based games required a constant internet connection, no thanks. I doubt the next consoles will make that big of a jump, but that's where it's heading. So once it happens, I'm sticking with retro and DRM free PC games (I see indie games as the only real future of gaming). I want to own my games, and I want to know I'll be able to play them in 10 or 20 years!
No used games is the game breaker for me. But who needs Super High Def with Cut scenes every 10 mins and tutorials you never asked for and DLC required to finish the game or Online pass on top of paid subscriptions (If I had a PS3 I'd pay for PSN Plus) I'm perfectly happy tracking down a copy of Pulseman for the Mega Drive or Sin and Punishment. the 100s of NES and Famicom games I only slightly got to know through an Emulator. SNES and SFC games.... hell even the PS2 has a wealth of games I haven't even sneezed on let alone played. Gameboy games, So much I haven't played.
If indie games are the future of gaming, then gaming truly has no future. Hell is a place where the only video games you get to play are "quirky" indie fake 8-bit zombie tower defense with a twist titles with added wacky and zany dialog. Well, those and Dead Rising.
I'm getting a WiiU as the main family console to play with the kids and that's it. I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the next PlayStation or Xbox though.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one so drained by DLC and pre-order bonuses and online passes and all this shite to have basically given up this generation for it and to be honest I've no interest in the next gen either as I can't see it changing. Literally nothing since Dark Souls has excited me, my Twitter feed has blown up recently with Dishonored and X-Com and Halo chat and I couldn't be less interested in any of it, instead I'm picking up PS2 games for a penny each on Amazon and having a great time with Silent Hill 2 at the moment. Also playing the hell out of the Super Famicom these days, there was a lot of stuff I missed back then as I couldn't afford to buy games myself and given the price of boxed games in good condition now I'm having to research my purchases a bit more but there's still plenty of mileage in that system for me. Off work next week and I've got Super Metroid waiting for me, can't wait to finally play through that. A depressing thought I had recently was how we might well never see the likes of Resident Evil 4 again. Not just in terms of quality, as it's a ludicrously high watermark, but as a package even the GC original was incredible value for money. A fairly lengthy (about 17 hours for me first time), high-action single player campaign, with a bonus mission, and an arcadey spin-off thing unlocked when you finish it. They'd be 800 and 1200 points respectively now, the costumes would be extra, and they'd probably cut the castle section out.
Next Gen 90% FPS' and 7% sports games and 3% games worth a shit. I just realized another option I left out "Too much Non gaming content" like TV apps, Web apps, social media feeds while you play Halo 12.
I voted other. I have the retro bug. I want to play Neo Geo. I want to play Super Nintendo. I want to play Dreamcast. I want to do that with original old hardware and SD CRT screen. There´s nothing interesting about consoles that bring the graphics to almost the level of today´s pc. I have a powerful pc for modern stuff for when there´s an interesting game like the Witcher 2, Dishonored, X-com or Dark Souls.
I really don't see the problem with these. If you don't want to use them, then don't. (besides, I use the PS3 Netflix app all the time)
I agree. Indie games are hardly the future of gaming. Plus I think most of them suck, but that's just me. I also agree somewhat. My issue isn't exactly that non-gaming features are being added, it's that the attention has shifted towards those features instead of the gaming aspect of the console. Just look at Microsoft and the 360. Banjo-Kazooie 3? Nope, enjoy Netflix. Killer Instinct 3? Hope you like ESPN. Fable 4? Hell no, have Internet Explorer instead. Battletoads? Screw that, here's Twitter. Have fun guys!
SUPER REGION LOCK (no used games) DLC is annoying but can be lived with. digital distribution only would be annoying also. but could live with it. over vealous pain in the ass DRM and Region locking win over all as my most dispised "features" also another annoying thing is as stated the non gaming features, playing movies and music is fine imo but leave it at that. and the serious issue with the dumbing down of games needs to be addressed . could rant all night / morning / day / week / month... but i'll leave it there lol
Nah, most of them do suck. I don't think they take any resources away from actual game development: after all, it's a hell of a lot easier to make an app than an entire new game. And come on, do you really want current Rare to touch any of those franchises? I'd say the Netflix app is a lot more enjoyable. This would make sense if, you know, Turok was ever good to begin with (which it wasn't).
