turok the 1st one was a good game in its day. its more the fact that the 360 dash throws everything non game related in your face also the shopping aspect of it annoys me, but it seems alot of companies are going for the mass in your face marketing recently. i prefer the wii and psp / ps3 interface. if i want to add things to my "dash" i can on the wii, if i dont want them they're not there, if i want to go buy a game on the console i go to the wii shop channel / psn, 360 dash throws a load of crap at you.
Indie isn't the future of gaming, but it does take the edge off, GOOD indie games anyway, and by that I mean something some antisocial Japanese kid made that looks like a retail game from 10 years ago.
Everything being online will just ruin my collection - that, and too many DLC - you pay for the game, then pay extra for everything else which is kind of a joke. Same with that Spyro Skylanders shit - game costs you first up, then to actually use everything in the game, you'll spend over $300 more collecting all the figurines - makes the game far too expensive for what you get/what you'll use. IMO. Maybe the golden days are over...
to me the worst part of DLC is what happens when the service is gone, ie. the original Xbox Live, if you want to enjoy any DLC that came out back then better hope someone archived it (if someone has all the dlc for toejam and earl 3, uhhh, message me)
For me it's several of the above. I hate the PSV card system. that makes home-brew that much harder not to mention games will be harder to back up in 15 years. The DLC: That's cool but it seems to be going to far. Need I mention dead services? Original Xbox Live, Sega Net, and others I don't remember ATM. Region locking. The whole concept of that is bullshit to begin with. Just because USA doesn't play much soccer compared to Europe or South America doesn't mean that there aren't people here who want to play a soccer game from those countries. So Y U make game for those areas only??? Then the price. Not everyone can afford a $300 or $400 console then another $50 to $60 per game for it up front. Let's not forget the HDTV set either since I no have one. $600 or more... I'm too broke to get that much crap... Lastly is the space. I don't have it for a 40" LCD 3D TV set. If I were to go HD, I'm for DAMN sure going 3D. PS3 and Blue Ray 3D is where I'd go. Wow! What a rant! I could go on a lot longer but I think my point has been made...
I want to say most of the above, but from having to pick one, I don't want another 360/PS3 era where all the games seem to be dark FPS's or just dark and gritty all together. This is why I prefer retro gaming. The games back then tried to be fun. Now we get COD, Halo, Battlefield, and all that. At least Nintendo retains their gaming style from the 90s.
Who are games marketed to these days anyway? 5-14 yr olds? 14-20 yr olds? 21-30 yr olds? 30+ yr olds? Back in the 90s after the 80s video game crash killed interest in games among an older crowd, and with the effects of the Reaghan era 80s baby boom, kids and young teenagers were the most lucrative audience for console videogames imo. In contrast, younger gamers were not a majority during the PS2/GC/Xbox1 era as many young baby boom users from the 90s were still playing video games after ages 18+. I'm sure the games get tailored accordingly: not just thematically (more war sims, more GTA, more realistic car and sports simulations, more dark and gritty stuff to appeal to adult gamers) but the financial model - DLC and pay-to-use services as well. While a 5-14 yr old doesn't have easy access to a credit card, a 20+ yr old certainly will. I don't think things would go back to the way they were, but I wonder how things would be if the gamer demographic shifted back to a younger audience again, where the 5-14 yr old demographic is the most lucrative gamer audience. Is that even possible anymore when games have gone the dark/gritty or simulation route and gaming isn't necessarily seen as a juvenile pursuit?
if they go completely digital i will never buy any game for such a system as only physical releases matter to me !
I would have to say, pretty much all of the above. The thing that will annoy me beyond all is the push towards digitally distributed games only. There's nothing more satisfying than possessing a physical copy of a game that can be played any time you want, without restrictions. I'm half way sitting out this generation because there's not much that interests me, plus the nonstop online junk. If a game has to be multiplayer, an offline version should be mandated. Maybe it's showing my age a bit, but I've always preferred playing against someone in person rather than over the net.
Well I don't know about you guys but there were ALOT of games I enjoyed or wanted to play and have not yet from this generation. The games I play don't really do the DLC thing. Made a list of games I either played and enjoyed, bought and have yet to get to or want to get. Alot didn't make it in there as I put it together a bit quickly. PS3/360 Darksiders Siren Demon Souls Lost Odyssey Blue Dragon Beautiful Katamari Culdcept Saga Magna Carta 2 Limbo Deathsmiles Catherine Street Fighter IV Resonance of Fate Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts Viva Pinata El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron Katamari Forever Raiden IV Bayonetta Dante's Inferno Mamoru-kun wa Norowarete Shimatta Otomedius Excellent Silent Hill: Homecoming Downpour Wartech (aka Senko no Rondo by G.Rev) Wii Stuff Zelda: SS Little King's Story Lost in the Shadow Fragile Dreams Muramasa the Demon Blade Monster Hunter Tri The Last Story XenoBlade Chronicles Sin & Punishment: Star Successor Ivy the Kiwi Epic Mickey Tatsunoko vs Capcom A Boy and His Blob Ultimate Shooting Collection Let's Tap Octomania Super Paper Mario Donkey Kong Country Returns Moster Hunter Tri PSP/DS Stuff Kirby Games Sonic Rush Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan Okami-den Dragon Quest IX Hammerin Hero Prinny games Every Extend Extra Dark Spire Downstream Panic Devil Survivor SMT: Strange Journey Bangai-O Spirits Nanostray Lumines Contact Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins Eco-Creatures Solatorobo: Red the Hunter Yoshi's Island DS R-Type Command Steambot Chronicles: Battle Tournament on another note... This whole "Realistic" or "Gritty" or "Mature" thing that seemed to hit full swing when GTA III came out for the PS2 bores the crap out of me. Sure I am more then happy to play and FPS with some interesting elements to it... but this whole Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty thing... kinda lame. Give be a bright colored fantasy world over some beefed up jock guys running around shooting things any day. Not too excited about next gen, so many games from this and last gen that I have missed that are super cheap.
Had to vote "other" because it's all the above. Digital copies is what makes me want to punch a baby. Where is the fun of digital copies anyway? First you'd need a big HDD most games are 20GB or more are they not? Most countries don't have really fast internet to download 2-3 games at that size. I sometimes buy 2-3 games in the same week! Digital copies never really come down in price as often as physical ones do also. DLC bothers me a lot too. Like what the fuck? I own the game but to continue playing it longer I have to buy additional bullshit? Remember those days for PC when you'd hear about an upcoming patch, and it added new cars, characters, maps, weapons, and extra features! Those were the days. No used games bothers me as well, I always buy used games as I rare buy games when they come out, as I'm busy playing XBOX games . I rarely even play DOA 5 now, I finished quickly very little replay value as you get from games in the previous gen. And all over points are negative, doubt I'd need to explain the rest. All I can say GOH, you nailed it.
That's only true for the shitty-ass console download services, Steam has sales all the time. No, I sure as hell don't remember that happening too often.
Current gen is the consoles from 2005/ 2006 and newer. Dreamcast was dropped 2002. With the New Xbox 720, Wii U, and hopefully the PS4 or "Orbis" coming the current gen will be last gen soon. EDIT: Before anyone says this to me, I know about the Xbox 720 Christmas 2013 release projection already. I also know that the rumored PS4 will HOPEFULLY be released same time. And finally, I know the Wii U is right around the corner. I just learned from Wallfart (LOOL!) today that it hits shelves there 11/18/12 in America.
I AM going to skip next gen, just as i skipped current gen. Reason? Bah... i dont like newer game systems enough to justify paying full price for them. I will wait till they get dirt cheap ( I.E When the new gen after them is available) This means that i am probably gonna buy a Wii in the next year, not a Wii U, a Wii...
All of the options in the poll would annoy me but I went with "completely digital download" to me that is no different than booting up MAME and paying a ROM. You forgot to add "stupid ass gimmicky controls" to the poll.
Geez! Dropped is a bit harsh, maybe placed down gently. That said, it's all just junk to me! Am I jealous of those who can enjoy current generation gaming? A little... Looks like we had the Dreamcast still going in 2003 down under too! :wink-new:
If everything goes 100% digital with no physical media at all I will have no qualms with piracy. They will most assuredly make it difficult to download a game you've paid for to a new console you buy because the old one was lost/broken/stolen. And if you get your console is banned don't be surprised if you can no longer access the games you've legitimately paid for because the HDD died and you had to get a replacement. Microsoft already does the latter and it disgusts me. I've heard about entire accounts being banned and with it all paid for content which IMO should be flat out illegal. But at that point I'm not sure I'd even bother pirating anything as I'd feel guilty even offering a penny in profit to such an anti-consumer company. Unless they take the route where the console loses them money and they try to make it up on games then I'll buy 5.
