Without wanting a PS3 vs 360 war, and I am sure this has been asked elsewhere, but are there any shooters (SCHMUPS) for the PS3?
There's the Gundemonium Collection, the Soldner-X games and Pixeljunk Shooter if you wanna count it, plus several good ones on Japanese PSN like Einhänder, Dodonpachi and G-Darius. I think that's it...
I have Soldner-X, Soldner X-2, PixelJunk Shooter but also Gravity Crash, Star Trek D-A-C and Super Stardust HD. If you consider After Burner Climax and and Heavy Weapon Schmups of sorts I have them too. All from the European PlayStation Network Store. Only problem is now I sold my PS3 to repay my friend/pay for stuff sooner *cough* I can't really play them for the time being. At least they are bound to my account though for future use.
Tricky one this because I like pretty much all the generations we've had so far. I'm 42 and I've been playing videogames in one form or another since the late 70's and can't honestly say that any one generation is any better or worse than it's predecessor, however with the exception of titles like the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games and the various SingStar, Lips and U-Sing etc this current gen leaves me cold. Todays games are made for a demographic, painstakingly researched down to the nth degree to capitalize on target audiences who see a game franchise the same way a football fan sees a new strip, namely as soon as it hits the street if you don't have it you're somehow an outcast and the only way to regain acceptance into the fold it's either cough up or piss off. And it doesn't end there, once you've bought Generic FPS #877692 or Clone Racer 9,999,999,003, got it home and put it into your console, you then have to wait either for the bastard thing to install or sit gawping at the screen like a cunt for 40 minutes whilst it downloads the latest patches because when the frigger was mastered about 2 months ago the lead programmer forgot to include 3 bytes of code that wouldn't cause the fucker to crash either just before a save point or 3/4 of the way through a 20 lap race because you had the audacity to clip an invisible wall and your vehicle is just stuck there, hovering in the middle of nowhere as the screen just bends and warps as other cars lap you again and again and again. And then finally, once everything is installed and you're ready to play you go online to play against 'friends'. Only thing is, your 'friends' have had the game a week or 2 longer than you and either have all the best weapons, or cars or teams and you keep getting beaten mercilessly. What to do, oh the dilemma. Why, after spending £40 on a game would I want to do something as monotonous as play the fucker to earn these rewards of better guns, cars or footballers/golfers? Only a luddite would be so retarded, I know I'll completely negate the whole point of purchasing the game in the first play by BUYING everything the game has to offer from the PSN store or XBox Marketplace. And then I'll pay another tenner for an unlock code for some maps that are already stored on the disc I just purchased but can't gain access to because todays gaming is all about scamming money out of gullible people who have more money than sense. Who the FUCK are these bell-ends who keep on buying costumes for Super Street Fighter IV???????? If your life is that empty you can only get through the day by playing with Ryu and Ken et al in a slightly brighter pair of pantaloons then you've more money than braincells and deserve the real life kicking your onscreen counterpart is receiving every time you pick up the pad. Todays gaming is soul-less, corporate thievery and greed. Game length has been cut because todays gamer doesn't have the time to invest in his pastime. He's too busy going to the gym, or working or studying, or socialising with his/her huge network of friends to waste precious time on a game. If a game has an 8 - 10 hour plus 'run time' he's being marginalized because he doesn't have the time to devote to his hobby any more, so let's slowly but surely decrease game length until it becomes almost non existent, any extended playtime can only be had by playing online with a bunch of homophobic, jingoistic fanboys who love screaming racial slurs and telling you you're a fucking whiney ass Brit who should fuck off from their game and go and have some tea and crumpets. And then they either disconnect or report you. I know, I know, but for the grace of God go I, but shit there aren't half some spastics out there and their numbers grow by the day. So no, I'm not really a fan of the current crop of consoles or their lifeless, safe, sterile, asinine games. Seeing a lot of dislike for the PSX though and can't understand why. Yes, a fair few 3D games made you want to puke your eyes out of your ringpiece, but there were far more good games than bad, especially stuff that was only released in Japan with some fantastic shooters, platformers and especially fighting games. For every Krazy Ivan or similar turgid pap that got released in the West there were a dozen or more Japan only gems that would never have seen the light of day had it not been for how easy it was to code for Sony's console. And that can only be applauded, surely? And it was the same with the PS2, some cracking software early on that had it not been for the runaway success of the PSX would never have been made. 16 bit was my fondest era, but favourite gen I'd say would be 32 bit. I still play Ridge Racer to this day, just as I do Sega Rally. Yes the graphics were shitty in a lot of cases, the games were flawed because of the insistence in trying to make everything 3D but there was heart in the games, there was a passion from the developer that is sadly lacking in todays gaming world and for me the future looks even shittier and bleaker because it's just going to get worse and worse because there's no-one left who's willing to take a chance anymore, everything has become homogenised and we're all the worse off for it. Give me a Saturn or a DC over the 360 any day or a PSX or PS2. My Wii, 360 and PS3 just sit there while the older machines get almost daily play. Living in the past? No. Enjoying great games with heart and soul? Most definitely
I enjoy games from most generations 8bit and onwards. Really old stuff like ZX Spectrums and such I use to own and play, but nothing really had the impact that the 8/16bit generation had. If I had to pick one generation in particular, I'd pick the current gen as the choice of games available is so wonderfully diverse.
Wonderfully diverse? FPS shooters, 3rd person shooters, 'Street' racing games, a couple of pseudo RPG's and yearly sports games updates aren't what I'd call diverse. The High Street is just a wasteland of mediocrity and me too software.
I loved this post. Fantastic read! Spot on with the XBOX 360 and American online gaming approach... I detested playing online with the 360 on something like CoD due to the constant abuse. Then I realised the game was actually really quite boring anyway, and went back to my bright and colorful dreamcast. Now I'm in Japan, I've bought a PS3 for the HD fix (Wipeout HD is just awesome) and play Blazblue online with an actual friend that I meet regularly. I agree with the sentiments about the 32-bit platform. That was a huge war between Sony and SEGA, with "my side" losing, but we got some great games along the way. I'll remember SEGA Rally for as long as I can. The Dreamcast is fantastic, but I am debating giving the PS2 a chance, as I have never played one. Surely the Dreamcast and PS2 era were more diverse, especially the latter, with the largest games library on earth and huge variety within? This gen is about as diverse as the range of insults thrown around on XBL.
The 2 systems I play the most are the Sega Saturn & NeoGeo so I guess 32 bit & 24bit (or however you wish to classify it).
I played a couple of those, and wasn't very impressed. I've always been partial to Japanese arcade racers (although there are some western ones I like, such as the Cruisin' series). Other than Ridge Racer 6 and 7 (which I could never really get into because they basically seemed like ports of the PSP game, which I'd already played to death) there is a stunning lack of Japanese arcade racers this generation.
I personally find that there's more selection in high quality games than there ever has been before. Sure there are rehashes in sports games and FPSs like COD etc, but there always has been. For every great NES/SNES/Master System/Mega Drive/Saturn/Playstation/Dreamcast/N64/PS2 game there's a boat load of shit, and I merely think that now there's less shit games. And I still stand by my statement of the current gen being "wonderfully diverse", there's something out there for everyone now.
I am voicing my opinion on the current-gen, no offense to any, this is my personal opinion.. Sure the games today may be diverse, but most games I see are some horrid trash based off of stuff on TV/media.. Does "Micheal Jackson the Experience on Wii" sound interesting? ( good singer though). Or how about "Cooking Mama World: Babysitting Mama"? Or "Man vs. Wild on PS3"? Or " Brunswick Pro Bowling" on all the current platforms? These games do not seem the least bit interesting... Games today may diverse, but they are only intended to make revenue off target audiences. Think back to the previous generations: Final fantasy I-IV, Super Mario 2/3/64/Sunshine, Starfox series, Legend of Zelda, Sly Cooper series, Crash Bandicoot, Banjo-Kazooie, Sonic series and all the great classics surpass any current game. These classics take you on a magical thrill ride, unlike Kirby's epic yarn... :| Games these days are lacking heart.. Complete set requirements on a linear path, the end. I don't understand how people enjoy game these days... I bet most people here (+90%) would rather be olschool then play any dumb party game...
Current gen. It has the best of the old and new. Any older games I can just play on the newer consoles and I really enjoy a lot of the great games that have come out in the last 5 years.
I hated it when I was at a dinner party, and after dinner, the host's wife wanted to play guitar hero all fucking night... taking it in turns? I mean, fuck off! I tend to hate it when things become mainstream though. Always have done, and always will. Some kind of personality defect that wants me to always be different/a minority.
Not so much a generation but for me the timeframe of 91-98 was the best. There was just so much going on then. - Games were just starting to break free of being "straight-line". - You had Sega and Nintendo going head-to-head and then Sony came in and changed everything. - Systems like the Neo-Geo and PC Engine carving out their own niche. - CD and 3D technology emerging and coming into their own. - Importing was still something that was mysterious. - The golden age of genres like the JRPG and Fighter. - Seeing the second age of the arcade and the beginning of its decline. Just a great time.
So play other games? The XBLA/PSN/WiiWare/indie games that are pushing into new territories or exploring and improving the old school? Honestly, if you have a modern gaming system or two, the chances are incredibly high that you will have access to a broad variety of games you'll enjoy. Just ignore the army games, or Michael Jackson sing-dance whatever, it's not difficult. And anyway, throw a rock at a complete Megadrive collection and my money would be on it hitting some yearly iteration of a sports franchise or fucking Bubsy or some other unplayable shite. I'm kind of tired of hearing it, along with "all modern games are bland FPS". It's just wrong, and it's the frustrating kind of wrong that seems to be born of a simple lack of awareness. It's like saying that all Megadrive games are me-too Mario/Sonic clones, or that all Playstation games are me-too JRPGs. Obviously both genres were well stocked and important to the market on their respective platforms, but nobody pretends that that's all there was available. Your favourite genre may not be as well stocked these days but you will be able to get your gaming fix one way or another. If you really can't find anything at all that you like playing on a modern console then surely you aren't interested in gaming any longer - you're interested in nostalgia. I think we all understand the appeal of playing games we loved as kids, but to get from there to "all modern games are dumb" is a leap too far. Like Nintendo did it for free. Ditto
Yeah I know some people may enjoy the current gen of gaming, but there is something that I don't understand, but I do know that the Indie game market today is really good, because people have knowledge and access to tools to make games; it's not just for giant companies anymore. Some indie game are really great!
I'd say 16bit I could never part from those systems genesis, snes, turboduo, neo-geo I liked the 8bit nes sms gen but 16bit was the sweet spot for 2d games. Could be just nostalgia and the impression the games made on my younger moldable mind. It was like dark magic, I could not image how it all really worked. As I got older I understand how it works and I'm less immersed as I examine the game engine too much. My BOOK effect theory. Just like books, while playing simple video games you let your imagination run wild to create the experience. Your mind will fill the gaps and over look things as needed. As hardware power increases people expect games to be more realistic. Less imagination. Little flaws can kill the immersion.
