How does it act like a modchip? From what I remember, it enables you to play Imports. That is not like a modchip at all. That's like a region switch for Saturn. A modchip for Saturn plays backups/burns. Not Imports unless they are patched and burned.

I don't use AR because I have the official 4MB RAM cartridge and a modchip. The modchip was extremely easy to install, and also I've heard that the AR cartridge has a thicker pcb edge which could fuck up your cartridge slot.

Really the question should be, Why would you use the AR for Saturn?

    1- To cheat on games
2- To store saves on Flash Memory instead of battery backed SRAM
3- To not need to open the console up and mess it up.

I use a modchip and a custom built region switch on my own Saturn so
I mostly use the AR to cheat and backup my saves.
Most times it's so painful to make it work I just play the damned games without cheats (hehe)

I don't need to cheat on games, the built in 32Kb of Save RAM is plenty, and you only have to open it once and there is pretty much no chance of messing up the console installing a modchip unless you are a moron.

Cheats can be quite fun if you're curious about how the games work... ;)

    Just for the record

MODCHIP - Plays backups, does not defeat region lock
AR4/5in1 - Plays games from any region, no backups

IMO if you have a model 1 (oval buttons) the swap-trick is so easy you dont really need a modchip.

It will run with the proper master code.

It's a bit annoying though every time you want to boot a game. The beauty of Saturn games is that you can, of course, change their region on the PC. I'll probably install switches in my spare Saturn though, and chip it. I love how this is possible, in the same way it was on the Mega Drive.

I recently scratched disk 2 of PD Saga and it would freeze up on me in some parts of the game now making it almost impossible to make it further in the game.
So I picked up a Mod chip last week and was able to finally beat the game today. With out a Mod chip I would of never been able to complete a game I own and paid a pretty penny for.

Now the PD Saga disk 2 could of been scratched like that when i bought it but I cant really put the blame on something Ive owned for 6 months and never started playing till two weeks ago.

with my modchiped JAP Saturn I just press the reset button to switch between JAP and USA regions, so I can play everything except euro/pal games.

Would the action replay allow me to play pal games?

The better solution would be the country switch mod (and the 50/60hz mod), but yes it would.

the 4in1 will let you boot all regions without having to use the reset button. though I can't recall if the saturn handles vidmodes between usa/euro games very well top of my head

What's this vidmodes thing all about?

I can play PAL games on a NTSC console with the Action Replay without problems. Even a lightgun game (PAL Mighty Hits).

Here in Brasil we use NTSC games but the video output is PAL-M, it's the same number of lines of the NTSC but with some difference in the colors. It's 60hz like USA. In fact, only the name looks like the european PAL.

So, here, games of every region works fine.

The worst thing about any third party cartridges is that the pcb board is thicker then an official cart which eventually makes the cart slot in your system not read any cards. It happened to my first saturn.

Now a days I have a model 2 usa saturn and a model 1 japanese gray saturn and just use my official memory cards and the official 1mb and 4mb for games that need those. I personally like having real games more then downloading them anymore.

    My Sat modded

I had my Saturn (US) modded to play backup games a long time ago. But with people selling their games a low prices, I've been able to get a nice library going. :cur_sonic: Would the Game Shark allow me to play back up games too?

Think a bit about it. The GameShark is sold legally in any shop...
