I modded my Saturn in order to preserve my software and to preserve my Saturn. The swap trick is pretty hard on the motor that spins the disc and it will eventually break it. Although Saturns are not rare by any means nowadays, there has not been any efforts to clone it or remake it so i am thinking in maybe 20 years they could go extinct and i want mines to be around.

I don't understand this point of view. What's the difference in Panzer Dragoon and a new game, GTA 4, for example?
They're games. And if I've never played a game and want to play, I'll usually buy it. The release date is that important or that is your opinion for any game?

I've paid almost $60 in my factory sealed panzer dragoon, btw...

You know he probably means Panzer Dragoon Saga, not Panzer Dragoon, right?

Still, you can get it waay cheaper than $150. Copies often selll for around the £60 mark here (under $100).

As far as the developers are concerned, there's a massive difference between pirating a new game and pirating an old game. If Eva did buy Panzer Dragoon Saga for $150, Sega wouldn't see a penny. If he buys GTAIV the developer still gets their share (unless he buys second-hand, but that's a different debate).

I disagree. They still own the IP. Re-releasing old games is a big thing (especially since the Wii came out). If a game is selling for $150, it shows the developer/publisher that it is still a sought after game. They may well want to re-release it, therefore.

Looking on eBay UK, some copies that sold for high figures had 10-17 bidders. Let's say 10 people bid. Now, if the game were sold as a download on a console, let's say it would cost $10 in points. If those 10 people just wanted to play the game, they could have it for $10, not $150. That would be $100 in the IP owner's pocket (less fees from VC or whoever hosts it). If those 10 people decided $150 was too much for an old game so they'd just pirate it, the IP owner gets nothing.

Piracy is piracy. Let's not get into a discussion on the morals of piracy on this thread, though ;-)

Yeah, piracy leads to a long discussion. I was more interested in the way the user talked about Panzer Dragoon. Pay for the game is that bad because it's old or because it's short? The game is so good. I often turn on the game and put on that gourgeus option menu just to listen to its beautiful music. =D

I really can't help in the "why chip a Saturn" discussion. I have to admit that I simply don't play the game if I don't have it complete.
(yeah, steam or things like that will never work for me)

Are you honestly suggesting they're the same, though? That retro piracy has the same kind of negative financial effect on a developer that new game piracy does? I agree that the discussion on morals and piracy is subjective and pretty tired, but this is a simple question of numbers, and the answer is "no".

So IP holders would screw themselves over by not re-releasing popular old games if everyone stopped buying those games on ebay? As a proposition that's far enough removed from reality for me not to care.

I get what you're saying - the second-hand market informs developers what older games are still in demand. I just don't see millions in lost revenue on this, to be honest.
