the phone and mp3 markets over-lap, but this doesnt mean that whoever purchased an iphone didn't need a new phone. For most people who bought and iphone, they bought it because it's a phone, they also use it as a phone. Apple is clever to use their technology in other ways to reduce costs, i see no clash between the products, hence i wouldn't call stupid anyone who did buy an iphone.
ha, its worth it if I am able to surf the net on the crapper =) no, seriously.. The safari thing would be great during warm nights sitting on my patio and surfing the net on the bright screen. I am sold on the thing..
Is anyone going to own an ipod touch and an iphone?? If you had an ipod touch would you still feel the need to own an iphone with similar features and a premium price tag? No one bought the iphone because it was a phone... if they wanted a phone they could have gotten a tight ass nokia free with the activation of a new line on ANY cell carrier. People bought the iphone because they wanted a shiny new gadget with some nice features... oh yeah and you can call people with it too.. I have no problem with iphone owners, but lets be honest and not pretend that their purchases were made out of pure functionality and necessity. Apple strategically released the more expensive of the two items first and locked the early adopters into a contractual agreement inorder that they will be obligated to use the device for years to come.. then shortly thereafter they release a less expensive alternative device for those that just want all of the shiny bells and whistles without the headache of forced use. The touch is a nice looking device in both looks and features and I wouldn't mind having one if they were cheaper. Given the choice of the two devices I would have to choose the touch because I like my current phone. If the touch were never released I'd be buying the iphone when it got cheaper just so I could use the browsing via wifi and media player functions.. I'd still keep my current phone though.
firstly, as a long-time user of touch-screen smartphones I detest the touch-screen for anything other than "office mode". Hence, I prefer a click-wheel to having to touch the screen to change songs etc. I m old fashioned when it comes to my gadgets. Secondly, I don't like the iphone myself, I own a Sony Ericsson P990i, which of course can also play mp3s. I never ever use it for mp3s though, although I do play SCUMMVM on it - i have a seperate mp3 player. People who have bought an iphone dont need to buy another mp3 player, suggesting that they would is like having two left hands - pointless. People who want a shinny smart-phone will buy an iphone. People who are sufficiently covered by a capable mp3 player will buy the ipod touch. Surely, one product is the super-set of the other, namely the iphone, but this doesnt mean there's no disctinct market-share for both. It's like saying that because Sony Ericsson makes the K800 , which has a cybershot, and the P990i, which is a smart-phone but with a less capable camera, people should buy both. No. It depends on what you believe your needs really are. The price and contractual commitments also reflect this. PS: if you really want a good smart-phone:
gotta stop talking for everyone. I bought the Iphone since att is good here, and I needed a nice, slick phone. Its a hell of a lot better then a razr. And why mention a contract? That's standard for anything so
Really? and how much music you can carry with just 4GBs? The Touch at least has 16GB which isnt amazing but it'll cover most people's needs. If you need even more then you can get an iPod classic for even less money. And how does the iPhone fits in the smartphone category? you could say its between a normal phone and a smartphone in terms of functionality, buts thats it: no real office apps, coupled with a closed dev enviroment isnt something I would consider in the same ranks of WM and blackberry smartphones. And borman, no offense but anything is better than a razr:lol:
Living in the united kingdom, I thought the contract was quite expensive & 2 years is a long time, I was unsure whether to go for a 12 or 18 month contract. I'd expect to get the iphone free if I were paying that much for so long. However I'm led to believe that the contract isn't that different from any other, so for once it's not us that are being ripped off. I'd also expect a proper 3g network, instead of EDGE. But then I guess we're spoilt over here. You do however get a load of voice minutes in your contract, so maybe it's worth it. But I wouldn't use 450 minutes let alone 1350. Cheapest contract my provider does is approximately 30 dollars a month, but generally if you phone them up and say you are going to switch ( when your contract runs out ) then they often give you cash to stay. I recently managed to renew my contract after 2 months & get approximately 200 dollars ( I could have asked for a new phone but I'd only have sold it on ebay anyway ). O2 for some reason sent out a letter to my old address saying I was due an upgrade & they honored it. I went for the sony ericcson k810i, because I wanted a reasonable digital camera. The k800i was too big and I didn't like any of the similar specced nokia's, I'm fussy about button layout. I like the idea of the nokia camcorder ( the one they used in transformers ), but it's just too big. I wanted something smaller than the k810i, like my old t630 but you have to make compromises. I agree though that the timing of the ipod touch vs the iphone launch was to catch out the people who weren't interested in the iphone being a phone. Saying everyone who bought one did it for that reason would be stupid, but it's an obvious marketting ploy. It does make sense, because if they launched them the other way round, someone who would have bought an iphone as a phone and mp3 etc player might have bought an ipod touch & not only would they have spent less money but they would have still been unhappy ( unless they bought both & if they're going to do that then apple still wins ). Launching both together would have been nicer to the consumer. Or launching them a greater distance apart.
Do Razrs suck or something? I just got one when I joined a family plan thingy. I have it customized and stuff though, but I dunno much about cell phones.
I must be the odd person here as I have a seperate PDA (Palm Zire 72), a mobile phone (have 4 different ones depending on what country I am in...) and a 3GB MP3 player (thats about a day of solid music), I just either drag and drop folders of music I want to listen to and get a program to copy random tracks to my mp3 and I have a weeks worth of music to listen to. I pretty sure that most people can't even guess half of the music on their hard drive, let alone have a excuse for wanting to bring it all with them... Why do people buy ipods given that the music quality of them is questionable at best and that other makers have much much better sound quality... Also how desperate do you have to be to watch video on a tiny little screen?
Well, with my Zune, I have 30GB of storage on there and it plays videos. I use an MP3 player almost everyday, and the whole time I'm at work. I have about 300 CD's on it, but I'm a big music fan and even on shuffle, which is usually what I use, I usually know my songs. The video part I use sometimes, for instance I watched Red Vs. Blue on it the other day at the college while waiting for someone. But I think a lot of those kids with iPods really don't need all that space or anything, especially when there paying for iTunes songs.
I have a total of about 8 gigs of music. I carry around 4 with me, since the other 4 is stuff I listened to once. Hence why Im fine. And the video is large enough for when you are doing small commutes and trips. Honestly, its not like I can take my projector on the bus with me. And while technically closed source, who cares? The Xbox was technically closed source as well. Apps are coming out daily. Ive already got basic games, a decent NES emulator, a basic word program, 2 AIM clients, and more. And on the contract thing again, I pay 70$ a month, but thats with unlimited data and all that. And 2 years has been the norm everytime myself (or friends and family) have gotten phones. Of course 3g is better then edge, but so what. I get great speeds here, so no complaints from me.
Me too but sadly my year-old phone is already showing some damage, even when I dont do the kind of stuff that gets gadgets broken... Welcome to the club: I've the same damn PDA. It was so buggy that I only used it as an MP3/PMP player, and some emulators, but thats it. What a fucking waste of money that was..
I found it a nice stable machine, used it for Mahjong, Smartlist, Documents to Go, Photos, Glorified address book, Chess, Expense calculator (with DtG). Didn't use it as an MP3 player as an MP3 player is better nor emulators as again it was a pointless waste of time. I'm sad that most MP3 players now use an internal rechargable battery as if you are out and about and you forget to charge it, it's easier to find an AAA battery then it is to try and charge the device up...
I tend to stick with Sony Ericsson devices myself. No matter what I'm looking for in a phone they seem to have me covered. But like Jamtex I also have a PDA and an MP3 player with me at all times. I'm with you on the rechargable battery issue. My only consolation is that most devices can now charge through USB and I nearly always have a laptop of some sort with me.
I bought a device whilst in Japan that takes two AA batteries and charges up mobile phones, on the plus side it has a USB connector too and charges up USB devices too. Still this is another piece I have to carry with me, which annoyingly is bigger then the MP3 player...
I generally carry a shoulder bag so one extra device shouldn't be to bad. I carried around a Solio solar charger for a while and it was nice, but for some reason it just wouldn't charge certain things so now it just sits on my desk. When I finally get around to ordering some new tips for it I'll probably give it another go.
Yeah well just imagine how bad it was that I actually used it for that... And funny you mention the batteries, since this is the only gadget that has given me any problems with battery life.
I think the touch screen is a gimmick. Isn't the Ipod basically like a touch screen minus the screen part anyway? Thats what it seems like to me. I mean there are no buttons and you just swirl around that circular thing. Also, its 14 gigs less than an Ipod Video, and $50 more. Hmmm. I wonder which one is the better deal? Anyhoo, I wasn't really interested in Ipod stuff until my dad got a 4 gig one for free in some deal at the company he works for. He gave it to me because he didn't know how to use it, and I doubt he'd use it anyway, if he knew how. It was a pretty cool gadget, and honestly, the Itunes setup is a lot better than the Windows Media player one, imho. I sort of wanted a Video Ipod, but never could afford it. Once I got a job, I decided "What the hell, I'll get one" and the 30 GB of space is really nice. I still have more space to grow on!
