As we all know, the Wii Mini is a piece of crap that has absolutely no reason to be, and the unlucky bastards who picked it up know this too well. It has no SD card slot too, meaning that regular Wii exploits are out of question, and nobody has figured out a usb exploit yet.

I'd been wondering though, Would it be possible to fool the console into operating with its drive door open, and then swap DVDs to softmod the console like how it's done with PS2s? I'm not familiar with wii games' file structure or how the console's copy protection works, but it's an idea I felt could be worth testing I guess.

So in theory, you could make a copy of a wii game (say, super mario galaxy), replace one of its executables (if it has any) with the exploit, and then do the swap trick (with a piece of electric tape where the console tries to read its security gizmo on the dvd) until the exploit is launched, and then it would be possible to access the usb stick where the files needed to install the softmod would be? hell, maybe that way it'd be possible to re-enable networking capabilities (for those with ethernet dongles) after the softmod is installed?

That would piss off nintendo but what can they do? they removed any regular means of updating the console so they wouldn't have an easy, convenient way to patch the exploit anymore, barring on-disk updates.

just something I felt like tossing around.

IIRC there are places to solder in the SD card slot and/or WiFi components. Two known, documented vectors for attack.

But unless I'm mistaken, there's still no way to access either from the software side

Still need a custom disk to even get a door open for hacks. The wifi, SD, and USB ports are useless. You can populate the wifi and SD areas but they won't work without custom firmware hackery. Perhaps loading the firmware from the standard wii might work. I think they are all the same hardware wise.

Nintendo has started selling the consoles state side at least. I've seen them in toys'r'us and at the nintendo store. So hopefully we can see more development for it now that it is more accessible.

What does super smash bros brawl do if you solder in an SD card?

If Nintendo left IOS36 alone, it *should* work. but most likely, Nintendo removed the SD Card support from the Wii Mini version of that IOS.

So did anyone ever get around to trying to softmod the wii mini using that kinda exploit?

I'm kinda surprised they didn't just leave SD card support out on the wii u's vwii too if it shut down all the exploits

I guess nobody cares about Wii mini - all people i know who bought it did it only for 1-2 games, like Wii Sports Resort or something. And there's still plenty of normal consoles even in stores (no GC compatibles, of course).

For WiiU - why bother if they selling last bunch of Wii games and there will be no new ones?

The noobish idea I thought of was desolder the NAND used for game saves, channels, system menu, so forth, from an already hacked Wii.

Couldn't the Nand simply reflashed from a dump of a hacked console without desoldering?

Anyways, I doubt there's too much skilled people still willing to spend too much time hacking this subversion of the wii.

Didn't think of that. I can't imagine Nintendo's hardware team was very happy about it.
Having to work on a second further gutted model immediately after finishing one, when Wii U was their main focus at the time.

Wii NAND is encrypted per console.

I got a wii mini yesterday (I got it for free in exchange for helping someone softmod their wii u for regular wii games on hard disk). I would be willing to try the ps2-style exploit but I have no idea what the file structure of a wii game is and what their executables are, if they have any.

Which you could reencrypt. But to get the keys, you need to run homebrew.

Let's say that I manage to dump the wii mini's NAND, how would I be able to move the data from the onboard storage to a usb stick, theorically?
