First, if i put this in the wrong section please move this. Yesterday I decided to experiment with my Wii and my Wii U. I haven't tried this with my PS2 or my Gamecube yet but I will in the future. I decided to unplug the fan in the Wii and keep it like that and possibly do the same with my Wii U. The Wii was pretty warm when I opened it and felt the heatsink. It got a little hot when it was idiling on the HBC for 3 or so hours but it was probably fine. The Wii U was a different story. Unplugged its fan and it got hot to the touch on the main menu. Launched Meme Run (the least stressful game on the U) and was about the same. When I launched Mario Kart 8 and played on Grumble Volcano as my normal combo (Rosalina w/ Standard ATV and GLA Tires) it was burning hot after about 2 mins idling on the pause menu. I put the air duct and the fan back in and the fan immediately exhaled hot air. So I learned my lesson: A Wii U needs a fan while a Wii (one w/ a 65nm Broadway) doesn't really need one. I will post temps later using a infrared thermometer

EDIT: The temps w/o the fan were about 106.5 degrees F which was very hot. With the fan it is about 85 degrees F.

EDIT 2: Can a mod or someone remove this thread somehow? I understand that I may be a troll (which I'm not) and the fan may as well be necessary. Now this thread should be terminated!

It's like removing an exhaust from a car. The fan has a point to remove heat.

Yes. But I found out that the fan isn't all that necessary it seems

Why bother taking out something that is meant to be there? My Wii hardly makes any noise at all.

I see no point in that fan. The heat dissapation seems to be low w/ the wii.

One of my Wiis came with a faulty fan (why I got it cheap). I tried playing Smash for about 15 minutes and it shut off.

I put in a new (aftermarket) fan, and it hasn't had a single problem since. There's no reason not to use the fan on your Wii, or any console.

The Dreamcast's is just plain useless but i will keep it in consoles that had problems (PS3, Xbox 360). I mean at least I'm saving .3 watts of electricity!

The Dreamcast was a really compact unit, components next to other components which give off heat. There's a reason for the fans to be there, if not they wouldn't be there in the first place.

Dreamcast one gives off hot air, and so does the Wii. They need them.

I've never seen my DC give off hot air at all.

You'd save more electricity by removing the power LED.

Less risk of a house fire that way too.

Honestly dude, console manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to reduce the cost of producing hardware, if the fans weren't needed, they wouldn't be there.

Heat kills electronics, more heat kills them faster.

by that time you'll have a burnt down house and would have to explain to your parents/insurance companies why it was a good idea to take out a fan from a console...

It won't happen at all! It is controlled heat so to speak.

The N64 doesn't have a fan. I took the heatsink off of that anyways.
