I mean, Xbox 360 with his HD-DVD add-on, Sony with its price, Nintendo with its power?

I guess the Nintendo is in the best position, but there's always gamers that will bash it for its power.

    What do you think?

Sorry but the 360 doesnt need its HD-DVD add on to function and neither is Microsoft banking on making huge profits from it like sega and its previous add ons.

Not to sound like a fanboy, but I am rooting for Nintendo this generation. It just seems alot more practical of a system.

 The price is on point
 The system isn't a huge loud machine
    The controler seems comfortable
 The games do not look outdated for the systems power
 The choice of downloading classic games from 3 different console companies

Sony and MS are just getting way out of hand with their systems. Is all this power REALLY needed for these current games? I honestly am not impressed at all with the line up of games. The graphics are ok, but not a huge leap like Ps1 to Xbox. When I 1st saw stills of Xbox games before it came out, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had thought that there was no way you can play those character. They looked way too much like the gorgeous FMV sequences in games.

Let's just see how things play out this year.

nintendo lover or not, there's no denying that MGS4 will be graphically and most probably gameplay-wise something to envy.

    That remains to be seen
The Wii isn't huge, but whether or not it's loud is anyone's guess. Even the DC was loud and that didn't cause the fanboys to disown the console in droves...[/quote]
    As does the 360's...
    We'll see.
Xbox Live Arcade lets you do this now, albeit with a different lineup of games.

    Gameplay?

Um have they even shown actually gameplay screens or are you just going on FMV's? It's a bit early to start hyping something like that.

It's not doomed, but this might be the end of the boom. Expect the mainstream to shun gaming in the next generation.

I don't see why it would be any different than the last generation. As Kittyhawk says it might be the end of the boom, but I don't see any of the three major players taking too much of a loss. Worse case scenario one of them might get knocked out of the harware wars, each has a weakness (Sony with price, MS with bad name brand recognition, Nintendo with... um... cheesiness.) But it's anyone's guess, chances are it will probably stay the way it is.

I dunno. I think there will be some shifting of how big some of the players are.

    My prediction:
    US: MS/Sony(really close) > Nintendo
Europe: MS > Sony > Nintendo
JP: Nintendo > Sony >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MS

    Should be interesting.

That X360 addon is just a way for MS to avoid the no-media syndrome from the DC and GC. I remember people bashing the console just becos it couldnt play DVDs, and that created some short of RDF that make it look plain bad. With this addon you cant say X360 cant do HiDef.

About Wii, well I wouldn't say is a sucess yet, you dont know if gamers would really catch into the whole remote thing. Plus the $250 price, WTF is that? I only see 2 reasonable answers:

1-Nintendo is making a profit off the unit (which is a first in the industry)

2-The remote is really fucking expensive, what makes you think if it resistant since it must be pretty expensive to buy separately.

    PS3: Sony's Saturn...

Kotaku has 2 Wii E3 videos that show a few games in action

Some look good, others look worst than gamecube, but then again the quality isnt the best and they were probably early versions

    So here's hoping

That price isn't actually confirmed by nintendo yet - in the keynote they said that launch date n price will be revealed later. Even at $250, considering we don't know whats under the hood, we don't know whether that will be good value

I just can't see how kids can afford today's gaming. Yeah, MD and SNES games were expensive when we were young but at least you got 2 pads and SMW with your SNES for £150.

I think we often forget most of us now are grown up and have full time jobs. Whooping several hundred quid/bucks on a new console isn't as much of an issue as it would be if we were still 14.

Your average 2.4 kids household really can't afford to go out and spend £400 on just a games console. All these new consoles seem to be positioned as under-the-livingroom-telly super all in one media centres. Certainly very different to the SNES you had on a 14" telly in your bedroom all those years ago.

Is this a bad thing? I don't know, but I'll stop rambling on

    So-DAMN-TRUE.

I wouldnt be surprised at all if sony would poke out the same move later next year - cutting its console price by half.

If you were lucky enough to afford to have a TV in your room. ^_^;; Fighting for the living room TV was the norm for me.

The fact is, Sony potentially has the most losses per unit as they are they ones making the parts. $2 billion in R&D? That's a HUGE hole to get out of. Looking at the past, sure, they made money on each unit. Afteral,l hindsight is 20/20. If you keep selling units, assuming you don't sell them for $1, you will eventually make money per unit. Parts go down in price, which means profit margin goes up. This profit margin chips away at that looming R&D cost. And viola.... red. Of course, crystal balls have been proven not to work. If they don't sell a ton of units, they bite the bullet.

    600.- $ for a Playstation 3.
Holy shit - you could get a Nintendo Wii for that price + a download contingent of approximately 30 old games that even don't have box or instructions.

So much for the price and what you'll get for it. New consoles are always expensive so i don't see the point why this should be the generation of doom.

Wait a year, play the last masterpieces for Xbox and PS2 and you'll get a 360 / PS3 bundle for 399.- $ and everyone will be happy.

Oh yeah, did anyone mentioned Microsoft pretty much stoled GTA's thunder? All those gamers that only want to play gta will certainly go for the xbox.

I say the battle is between microsoft and nintendo, sony f*cked themselves really hard this time.
